Had the pleasure of trying the food at Nonya Bong’s for the first time thanks to a friend’s good planning - 10 dishes, 10 very happy people, you do the math!
Key highlights for me:
- Kueh Pi Tee (light and tasty homemade shells, flavourful fillings that weren’t too soft)
- Bakwan Kepiting soup (so good, especially with the fried garlic for that extra umami, many of us had additional bowls)
- Otak Otak (rather solid chunks - you can even purchase some for takeaway after)
- Nonya Chap Chai (stewed till the flavour seeped into each and every piece of vegetable)
- Buah Keluak (I loved the sauce for this, was drowning my rice with it - the buah keluak filling also had a very fine and smooth texture)
- Sambal Bling Bling (haven’t tried this before - prawns stewed with aromatics and a particular sour fruit, supposedly a favourite for the ladies, was really yummy)
- Sago Pearl Pudding with Gula Melaka (good balance of flavours with the Gula Melaka and coconut milk, but what won me over was how the sago still had a bounce to it, unlike many others I’ve tried that just break apart easily)
Bookings for this private dining are filling fast - it’s booked till March next year (with a few available weekdays in January), and Chef even tells us he has a booking for September next year! 😱 He does cater for takeaways though, so if you can’t wait months for your meal, that’s another option.
