ตอน ทำไม สหรัฐอเมริกา จึงเป็นประเทศแห่ง อุตสาหกรรมไอที ?

“การเน้นการศึกษา” คือคุณสมบัติสำคัญที่สุดที่ผู้ตั้งรกรากในยุคอาณานิคมหล่อหลอมให้กับชาวอเมริกัน
นับตั้งแต่เข้ามาตั้งรกรากในศตวรรษที่ 17

จึงไม่ใช่เรื่องแปลกที่สหรัฐอเมริกาจะมีมหาวิทยาลัยหลายแห่ง
ที่ถูกก่อตั้งขึ้นมาก่อนการตั้งประเทศด้วยซ้ำ
ไม่ว่าจะเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยฮาร์วาร์ด มหาวิทยาลัยเยล หรือมหาวิทยาลัยโคลัมเบีย

นอกจากการศึกษา ยังมีอีกหนึ่งสิ่งที่ถูกสั่งสมมาควบคู่กันก็คือ “การทำงานหนัก”

การมุ่งเน้นด้านการศึกษา ทำให้มีองค์ความรู้ที่พร้อมสำหรับการต่อยอด
ส่วนการทำงานหนัก เป็นการปลูกฝังว่า ใคร ๆ ก็สามารถประสบความสำเร็จ
และสั่งสมความมั่งคั่ง จนเปลี่ยนฐานะเป็นคนร่ำรวยได้ ถ้ามีความพยายามมากพอ..

คุณสมบัติทั้งหมดล้วนหล่อหลอมให้ผู้อพยพที่เข้ามายังดินแดนแห่งเสรีภาพนี้
มีความเชื่อมั่นในความพยายาม มองโลกในแง่ดี และมั่นใจในอนาคต
ซึ่งเป็นคุณสมบัติของชาวอเมริกันที่โดดเด่นเหนือใคร และยังคงมีอยู่มาจนถึงยุคปัจจุบัน

แม้สหรัฐอเมริกาจะตามหลังประเทศในยุโรปในการปฏิวัติอุตสาหกรรม
แต่ก็สามารถก้าวขึ้นมาเป็นผู้นำอุตสาหกรรมของโลกได้ภายในระยะเวลาไม่ถึง 100 ปี

การเป็นศูนย์รวมของผู้อพยพที่มีความคิดก้าวหน้า กล้าเสี่ยง
เปี่ยมไปด้วยความพยายามและความรู้ มีรัฐบาลที่สนับสนุนในเรื่องสิทธิบัตร
ทำให้เกิดสิ่งประดิษฐ์มากมายที่เปลี่ยนแปลงวิถีชีวิต
และก้าวข้ามทุกขีดจำกัดของความเป็นมนุษย์

โดยเฉพาะโลกของการสื่อสาร..

นับตั้งแต่วันที่ Alexander Graham Bell เป็นผู้ประดิษฐ์โทรศัพท์
สิ่งที่เปลี่ยนสัญญาณเสียงให้เป็นสัญญาณไฟฟ้า และเดินทางไปไกลตามสายไฟฟ้า
จนนำมาสู่การก่อตั้งบริษัท AT&T ในช่วงปลายศตวรรษที่ 19

ด้วยความที่สหรัฐอเมริกาเป็นประเทศกว้างใหญ่ การจะส่งเสียงจากฝั่งมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติก
ข้ามทวีปไปยังฝั่งมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิก จำเป็นจะต้องมีสิ่งที่ช่วยขยายสัญญาณไฟฟ้า

นำมาสู่การประดิษฐ์ “หลอดสุญญากาศ” หรือ หลอดอิเล็กตรอน
ซึ่งมีหลักการคือการให้กระแสไฟฟ้า ผ่านไส้หลอดที่เป็นโลหะ จนไส้หลอดร้อน และเกิดการเคลื่อนที่ของอิเล็กตรอน ความสามารถในการควบคุมการไหลของอิเล็กตรอนนี้เอง
ทำให้สามารถขยายสัญญาณอ่อน ๆ ให้แรงขึ้น และส่งสัญญาณไปได้ไกลกว่าเดิม

การสื่อสารผ่านโทรศัพท์ทางไกลครั้งแรก เกิดขึ้นในปี 1915 ระหว่างนครนิวยอร์ก เมืองใหญ่ทางตะวันออก กับซานฟรานซิสโก เมืองท่าที่กำลังเติบโตทางฝั่งตะวันตก

หลอดสุญญากาศนี้เองที่เป็นรากฐานและจุดเริ่มต้นของอุตสาหกรรม “อิเล็กทรอนิกส์”
ที่ปฏิวัติโลกของอุปกรณ์ไฟฟ้า และเทคโนโลยีการสื่อสาร

องค์ความรู้ด้านอิเล็กทรอนิกส์จุดประกายให้เกิดการวิจัยและพัฒนา
ในมหาวิทยาลัยทั่วสหรัฐอเมริกา หนึ่งในนั้นคือมหาวิทยาลัยในเมืองพาโล อัลโต
บริเวณหุบเขาทางตอนใต้ของอ่าวซานฟรานซิสโก ที่ชื่อว่า “มหาวิทยาลัยสแตนฟอร์ด”

มหาวิทยาลัยที่เพิ่งก่อตั้งในปี 1891 แห่งนี้ จะเป็นผู้พลิกโฉมบริเวณรอบอ่าวซานฟรานซิสโก
หรือเรียกว่า “เบย์แอเรีย” จากย่านที่เต็มไปด้วยสวนผักและสวนผลไม้
ให้กลายเป็นศูนย์กลางอุตสาหกรรมอิเล็กทรอนิกส์

โดยบุคลากรคนสำคัญที่มีส่วนผลักดันก็คือ ศาสตราจารย์ Frederick Terman
คณบดีคณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ ที่ได้ชักชวนเพื่อนนักวิจัยด้านอิเล็กทรอนิกส์
ให้มาร่วมงานที่มหาวิทยาลัยแห่งนี้ และบุกเบิกการเรียนการสอนอย่างเข้มข้น

พร้อม ๆ กับการพัฒนากระบวนการผลิตนักศึกษาให้เป็นนักธุรกิจ ด้วยการจัดตั้ง
Business Incubator for SMEs ที่ช่วยบ่มเพาะให้ลูกศิษย์ก่อตั้งบริษัทอิเล็กทรอนิกส์
เป็นของตัวเอง โดยใช้บ้านพักของอาจารย์ที่ยังว่างอยู่เป็นที่จัดตั้งบริษัท

แล้วความพยายามก็ประสบผลสำเร็จในปี 1939

เมื่อศิษย์เก่าวิศวกรรมไฟฟ้าจากมหาวิทยาลัยสแตนฟอร์ด 2 คน
คือ Bill Hewlett และ David Packard ได้นำหลอดสุญญากาศมาพัฒนาเป็น
Electronics Oscillator จนประสบความสำเร็จ และได้ก่อตั้งบริษัท Hewlett Packard หรือ HP ขึ้นที่โรงรถในเมืองพาโล อัลโต โดยลูกค้าคนสำคัญที่ซื้ออุปกรณ์นี้ไปทำภาพยนตร์ก็คือ Walt Disney Production

Hewlett Packard นับเป็นบริษัทอิเล็กทรอนิกส์แห่งแรก ๆ ที่ลงหลักปักฐานในย่านเบย์แอเรีย
หลังจากบริษัทได้ทำสัญญากับกองทัพสหรัฐฯ ดึงดูดเม็ดเงินจากการลงทุนให้สะพัดไปทั่วย่านแห่งนี้

หลอดสุญญากาศยังถูกนำมาใช้เป็นส่วนประกอบอุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์มากมาย รวมไปถึงเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ในยุคแรก ๆ แต่หลอดสุญญากาศก็มีข้อเสีย
การต้องให้ความร้อนแก่โลหะจึงจะมีการปล่อยอิเล็กตรอน
ทำให้หลอดต้องใช้พลังงานไฟฟ้าอย่างมหาศาล และมีราคาแพง

หลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง จึงมีการประดิษฐ์สิ่งที่จะมาทดแทนหลอดสุญญากาศ
เรียกว่า “ทรานซิสเตอร์”

ทรานซิสเตอร์ถูกประดิษฐ์ขึ้นในห้องทดลองของบริษัท AT&T ที่รัฐเวอร์จิเนีย ทางตะวันออกของสหรัฐอเมริกา มีคุณสมบัติเป็นสารกึ่งตัวนำ หรือ Semiconductor ทำให้ปล่อยสัญญาณไฟฟ้าที่อ่อนกว่า และควบคุมสัญญาณได้ดีกว่าหลอดสุญญากาศ

หนึ่งในผู้ประดิษฐ์ทรานซิสเตอร์ซึ่งได้รับรางวัลโนเบลก็คือ William Shockley ได้ออกมาตั้งบริษัทของตัวเองเพื่อพัฒนาทรานซิสเตอร์ให้ดียิ่งขึ้น ใช้ชื่อว่า Shockley Semiconductor

และก็เป็น ศาสตราจารย์ Frederick Terman แห่งมหาวิทยาลัยสแตนฟอร์ด ที่ได้ชักชวนให้ Shockley มาเลือกทำเลที่ตั้งของบริษัทอยู่ในย่านเบย์แอเรีย ซึ่งก็คือเมืองเมาน์เทนวิว
ที่ตั้งอยู่ไม่ไกลจากมหาวิทยาลัยสแตนฟอร์ด จึงทำให้เกิดการแลกเปลี่ยนองค์ความรู้ระหว่างภาคเอกชนกับนักศึกษาในรั้วมหาวิทยาลัย

Shockley ได้ตัดสินใจจ้างวิศวกรปริญญาเอก 8 คน จากมหาวิทยาลัยชื่อดังฝั่งตะวันออกของสหรัฐอเมริกา ทั้งฮาร์วาร์ดและ MIT ให้มารวมตัวกันในบริษัทที่เมาน์เทนวิว
นับเป็นจุดเปลี่ยนสำคัญที่ทำให้เบย์แอเรียเริ่มมีนวัตกรรมที่ก้าวล้ำนำหน้าภูมิภาคอื่น ๆ ของสหรัฐอเมริกา

ในช่วงแรกสารกึ่งตัวนำที่นิยมใช้ก็คือธาตุเจอร์เมเนียม (Ge) ซึ่งหายาก และมีราคาสูง
แต่ต่อมาพบว่ายังมีธาตุอีกชนิดหนึ่งซึ่งสามารถนำมาทำสารกึ่งตัวนำได้ดี และพบได้ง่ายกว่าเจอร์เมเนียมมาก ธาตุนั้นก็คือ ซิลิคอน (Si)

การใช้ซิลิคอนมาทำสารกึ่งตัวนำนี้เอง เป็นจุดเริ่มต้นที่ทำให้หุบเขาย่านเบย์แอเรีย
ถูกเรียกว่า “ซิลิคอนแวลลีย์” ในเวลาต่อมา..

หลังจากรวมตัวได้ไม่นาน วิศวกรทั้ง 8 คน ก็ตัดสินใจลาออกมาตั้งบริษัททรานซิสเตอร์ของตัวเองในปี 1957 ซึ่งต่อมาก็ได้บริษัทผลิตกล้องถ่ายรูป Sherman Fairchild เป็นผู้สนับสนุนทางการเงิน จึงใช้ชื่อบริษัทว่า Fairchild Semiconductor

การเข้ามาร่วมลงทุนของ Fairchild เป็นการปูทางให้นักลงทุนผู้มั่งคั่ง
เข้ามามีส่วนร่วมในอุตสาหกรรมเทคโนโลยีใหม่ ๆ เกิดเป็นธุรกิจเงินร่วมลงทุน
หรือ Venture Capital (VC) ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่แล้วนักลงทุนเหล่านี้
ก็มักจะนั่งในตำแหน่งคณะกรรมการบริหาร และคอยให้คำปรึกษาด้านต่าง ๆ แก่บริษัท

ถึงแม้จะดีกว่าหลอดสุญญากาศ แต่ทรานซิสเตอร์ยังจำเป็นต้องต่อกับส่วนประกอบอื่น ๆ เช่น
ตัวต้านทาน และตัวเก็บประจุ

เหล่าวิศวกรใน Fairchild Semiconductor จึงเกิดความคิดที่จะวางทรานซิสเตอร์จำนวนมาก ๆ และส่วนประกอบอื่น ๆ ไว้ในแผ่นซิลิคอนเพียงตัวเดียว

ความคิดนี้บรรลุผลสำเร็จในปี 1959
และสิ่งนั้นถูกเรียกว่า “แผงวงจรรวม” (Integrated Circuit) หรือ “ชิป”
ทำหน้าที่ควบคุมการทำงานร่วมกันระหว่างส่วนประกอบต่าง ๆ ภายในอุปกรณ์
ให้สามารถติดต่อและรับส่งข้อมูลถึงกัน และทำงานประสานกันได้อย่างลงตัว

ต่อมาวิศวกรที่เคยทำงานที่นี่ทั้ง 8 คนก็ได้ออกมาตั้งบริษัทของตัวเอง
ซึ่งความสามารถทางเทคโนโลยีจะทำให้เกิดธุรกิจย่อยขึ้นมาอีกกว่า 120 ธุรกิจ

2 ใน 8 คนก็คือ Robert Noyce และ Gordon Moore
ที่ได้ออกมาก่อตั้งบริษัทผลิตชิป ในปี 1968
โดยใช้ชื่อบริษัทว่า “Intel” โดยมีสำนักงานแห่งแรกในเมืองเมาน์เทนวิว

จำนวนแผงวงจรที่สามารถวางลงในชิปหนึ่งตัว เพิ่มขึ้นเป็น 2 เท่า ในทุก ๆ 1 ปีครึ่ง
ทำให้ประสิทธิภาพในการเก็บข้อมูลของชิปทุก ๆ 1 ปีครึ่ง ถูกพัฒนาขึ้นอย่างก้าวกระโดด
ซึ่งมีมหาวิทยาลัยสแตนฟอร์ดเป็นผู้ผลักดันงานวิจัยร่วมกับบริษัทเอกชน

ในที่สุดก็เกิดชิปที่มีขนาดเล็ก และมีแผงวงจรรวมมหาศาลที่เรียกว่า “ไมโครโพรเซสเซอร์”

การพัฒนาไมโครโพรเซสเซอร์จะเปิดทางให้การผลิตคอมพิวเตอร์มีขนาดเล็กลงจนคนทั่วไปสามารถมีไว้ครอบครอง และถูกเรียกว่า คอมพิวเตอร์ส่วนบุคคล
หรือ PC (Personal Computer)

หนึ่งในผู้พัฒนาคอมพิวเตอร์ส่วนบุคคลเครื่องแรก ๆ
คือผู้ช่วย 2 คน ที่เคยทำงานให้กับบริษัท Hewlett Packard

ผู้ช่วย 2 คนนั้นมีชื่อว่า “Steve Wozniak” และ “Steve Jobs”..

🌻Etsy.com(ETSY)今天盤後發表財報了, 盤後跌了10%.

🌻FireTV與Roku TV的市佔率
前陣子Amazon發表財報, 其中最引起我注意的, 是他們Prime Video串流媒體的成長速度, 因為我最近也常用Prime Video看影片, 影片量多的令我印象深刻.

Chadstone Shopping Centre is a super regional shopping centre located in the inner south-eastern suburb of Malvern East in the city of Melbourne, Australia and is the biggest shopping centre in Australia. The centre opened on 3 October 1960 and was the first self‐contained regional shopping centre in Melbourne.

The centre contains 129,924m2 of shop floor space, about 510 stores and more than 9300 free car parking spaces. It claims to be the biggest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere. It has as many as 68,000 visitors on its busiest trading days and attracts about 400,000 tourists a year from interstate and 200,000 from overseas.Sales at the centre exceed $1.4 billion—the highest turnover of all Australian shopping centres—and it has more than 20 million visitors annually.

The centre, also known colloquially as "Chaddy",boasts major anchor stores such as the Myer and David Jones department stores, Coles, Woolworths and Aldi supermarkets, and Kmart and Target discount department stores as well as a Hoyts cinema multiplex, an AMF bowling alley, an Apple Store, Dick Smith and JB Hi-Fi electronics stores and more than 500 specialty stores, of which the majority are fashion-related, including numerous high-end labels. There are two food courts and also two office towers located at the southern side of the centre.
