【想看美劇、Netflix 學好英文？成人學習者必須這樣做】
「當我坐在桌子前面追劇、看一部電影時，我會先決定好，今天這部片有多少的注意力資源，我願意給學習英文。」
今天想以語言學習熱衷者的角度跟大家分享有關於看英文電影、美劇、Netflix 等來學習英文的方法。
常常在旅遊時、或是看完電影後，身旁的友人會發現「王梓沅又在瘋狂做筆記了！」或是疑惑「為什麼ㄧ樣旅個遊。他旅完寫出了4篇有關英語學習的文章！！？？」。
外語要學好，不管環境如何（網路發達，至少以 input 條件來說，只要有心，環境可以製造地跟在英美生活生活幾乎一樣) ，其實根本的方法之一就是我們要有 awareness （學習意識)。學習英文時要「注意」、要「觀察」。
你如果在看電影、看美劇時懶得觀察「語言」，只想投入在劇情、男女主角的樣貌、音樂、燈光，那麼我會請你 "Enjoy life!" "Forget about learning English." 因為沒有 attention、沒有noticing，尤其對「成人學習者」來說，學習很難發生的。
因此，當我坐在桌子前面追劇、看一部電影時，我會先決定好，今天這部片有多少的注意力資源，我願意給學習英文。
If I just feel like relaxing, getting my mind off things, then I'll forget about learning English for the day and just immerse myself into the film. However, if my intention is to find some teaching / learning materials, I will make sure that I pay rapt attention to the language expressions they use, a practice that may, you might argue, make the film less enjoyable or entertaining.
若我決定好今天是要學習英文或是尋找教材的，我會將拿出一張白紙，將我邊看邊想要記下來的東西，很快地寫在白紙上。
白紙上可能會有「片語」、「慣用法」、「搭配詞」、「語塊」、「單字」、「漂亮的句子」等等。而看完電影後，我會再將凌亂的筆記，系統性地分類、整理起來。
✔︎ 大家也可以用 new words / receptive vocabulary (認得出用不出) 的歸類法去記筆記。
例如，我會跟學生說，如果你什麼都不刻意做，你看完 Netflix 最新的美劇 Inside Bill's Brain: Decoding Bill Gates, 得到的可能滿腦子就是 "foundation" "polio" "Microsoft" "climate change" 這些字而已。或是一點點對於學習英文熱情的持續吧。
但是同樣一集，我看完後，我得到的有
1️⃣ ...you have some solid chunks (秘書跟Bill Gates 說他某一天有一些塊狀時間...)
2️⃣ escalating trade dispute (電影剪輯新聞畫面時的旁白)
3️⃣ The idea showed promise. (用做文法課的教材)
4️⃣ to pass the point of no return
5️⃣ to put us out of business
6️⃣ I think you'd agree that's a long shot.
7️⃣ A federal judge found that Microsoft was a monopoly that uses its power to stifle competition at the expense of consumers." (好句)

在比較完這兩種學習的結果後，大家覺得看 Netflix、美劇可以學習英文嗎？答案應該是，看我們怎麼做。
下次有老美在跟你說學習英文就要多看、多聽時，記得告訴他們：「學習英文應該要學習者提高學習意識，妥善分配注意力資源。一味地多看、多聽，沒有思考怎麼看、怎麼聽，還是不會學好的。」
（你可以這樣講，因為他們不是學習專家，只是剛好英文是母語而已。)
