E L D E R S / Shooting the Midang Midang Music Video in Bario village was pretty bizarre because usually when we balik kampung (go back to the village) we’re in basic lounging and farming clothes. The aunties got such a joyous shock seeing me all dolled up like this. Chilling whilst the crew set up on site. When we create (music, videos, visuals), we always set out to honour our elders, ourselves, and future generations. It’s not a straightforward task of “writing a song”, or “shooting a video” but when we create we are informed and inspired by history, and we think of our place as young Kelabits within our community. Every community has artists, and every artist as a role and responsibility towards the community. We also consider what it is we want to pass on for generations to come. Like, how do you be a good ancestor ? It’s been a long learning journey, and continues to be one. Sometimes we stumble, but our elders are always there to guide us. I constantly talk to them about my work, email or msg them. This is journey is not mine alone.
