Hello cả nhà, lại là mình đây :)) Mình là Xuân Hoa, quản trị viên của group chúng ta.

Chuyện là tháng 12/2020 vừa qua mình thi IELTS và đạt kết quả (đối với cá nhân mình) là ưng ý – 8.0 overall và không band nào dưới 7.0. Tuy vẫn chưa đc như các cao thủ 9.0 hay gì nhưng đc mà được cái mình thi hơi nhiều (4 lần luôn á) :)) Đùa thôi hehe còn nghiêm túc thì là mình tích luỹ được một vài kinh nghiệm và phương pháp học qua các lần thi, nên mình muốn chia sẻ với mọi người. Mong sẽ giúp ích được cho các bạn trong quá trình học và luyện thi IELTS 😀

Hôm nay mình sẽ kể tiếp về 3 kĩ năng còn lại: Reading, Writing, và Speaking.

1. Reading:
Đây là kỹ năng dù điểm cũng ổn ổn nhưng quá trình mình luyện tập trầy trật nhất ạ. Mình là 1 auditory learner (người học qua thích giác) và cực ngại đọc này đọc nọ kể cả bằng tiếng Việt. Làm đề Reading thì cứ được 1 passage là buồn ngủ díp cả mắt lại, mò lên Thư Viện Tổng Hợp ngồi vẫn gà gật xuống bàn ngủ. Cộng thêm lúc ấy chưa tìm được đúng phương pháp học nên cũng bèo nhèo lắm, điểm cũ của mình xưa được 6.0 Reading thôi í :<

Nên mình xem việc cải thiện kĩ năng đọc nói chung và IELTS Reading nói riêng là 1 bước chuyển mình vĩ đại của bản thân :)) Những kinh nghiệm mình rút ra được trên hành trình này là:

- Thứ 1: Tài liệu uy tín + sửa bài kĩ:
Lời khuyên đầu tiên của mình là hãy sử dụng các nguồn tài liệu luyện đề uy tín nha các bạn ơi 😀 Mình từng thử qua đủ loại tài liệu và chật vật, xong rút ra được kinh nghiệm này. Ví dụ có đợt kia mình làm vài bài trong bộ Actual gì có nhiều chữ Trung Quốc í nhưng không hiệu quả. Mình thấy độ khó, dễ các đề không sát với đề thật lắm. Với cả cá nhân mình cũng không thấy đáp án logic, thuyết phục, kiểu đúng cũng ko biết vì sao đúng, mà sai cũng ko hiểu sao mình sai í. Xong vài lần như vậy mình quyết định chỉ làm bạn với các nguồn tài liệu tin cậy như: Bộ Cambridge, Road to IELTS (của British Council) thôi ấy.

Chất lượng vẫn hơn số lượng. Mình thấy không quan trọng mình giải bao nhiêu đề mà quan trọng sau mỗi đề mình biết mình sai lỗi gì & học được bao nhiêu từ vựng/ phương pháp. Nên mình chỉ chọn 1-2 bộ tài liệu tin tưởng và giải, sửa thật kĩ, đến độ gần như hiểu hoàn toàn, không còn khúc mắc gì nữa luôn ấy. Có khi sau mỗi test như vậy mình học (và vận dụng được) đc mấy chục từ mới luôn á.

- Vậy mình sửa bài như thế nào?

→ Thường mình làm đề xong xem đáp án + giải thích trên mini-ielts.com í. Vì trang này ngoài ghi đáp án còn locate giúp mình clues của đáp án nằm đâu trong bài, giúp quá trình sửa bài của mình trơn tru hơn nhiều. Đôi khi có trường hợp xem đáp án và biết đáp án nằm đâu nhưng câu/từ phức tạp quá, đọc vẫn không hiểu thì mình làm thêm 1 động tác nữa: Là search bài dịch để hiểu đại ý câu đó nói gì (chứ không nên quá phụ thuộc phần dịch tiếng Việt nhé ạ). Thường mình thấy những bài trong cuốn Cam thì bạn chỉ cần search tên + dịch là ra. (Vd: When evolution runs backwards IELTS reading dịch). Còn mà xem giải thích đáp án, xem dịch bài rồi vẫn không hiểu thì...mình vác bài đi hỏi vậy hehe, chủ động làm nhiều cách miễn là phải đảm bảo mình hiểu bài trước khi qua giải bài mới. 😀

→Về học từ vựng: Mình lọc ra những active vocab (từ vựng sử dụng thường xuyên, nhiều ngữ cảnh) để học. Trong đó ngoài nghĩa thì mình học luôn cả phiên âm, word family, và cách sử dụng. Những từ vựng advanced hơn, nhưng vẫn có gặp trong cuộc sống hằng ngày (Ex: equilibrium) mình vẫn cố gắng at least nắm được nghĩa + phiên âm để lần sau gặp lại trong những bài khác vẫn hiểu được. Còn những từ quá khoa học như tên chất hoá học, tên bệnh, tên vi khuẩn dài thườn thượt thì...thôi ạ 😀 Mình thấy câu hỏi cũng không bao giờ ác đến mức bắt mình hiểu hết những từ khoa học ấy mà chỉ kiểm tra khả năng đọc hiểu của bạn thôi. Nên hiểu được hết thì tốt, không thì thôi, cố gắng lần sau hehee.

- Thứ 2: Quản lý thời gian khi giải đề: Các bạn nhớ phân thời gian các passage khi luyện tập cho quen, tránh lố giờ chưa hoàn thành bài thì hơi tiếc nha. Một bài thi 60 phút nên mình dành thời gian cho 3 passages lần lượt là: 15’-20’-20’. Còn 5 phút cuối mình để dành kiểm tra lại và transfer câu trả lời vào tờ đáp án.

2. Writing:
Xưa ở lần thi đầu tiên mình có đi học 1 khoá IELTS để nắm các dạng đề/ dạng câu hỏi và cách tiếp cận. Về sau có nền rồi mình tự tham khảo thêm các nguồn trên mạng và luyện tập thêm để định hình cách viết cho riêng mình.

- Về cách tham khảo các nguồn:
Mình cực chăm đi đọc bài mẫu. Tất nhiên không phải để copy từ họ, mà sau mỗi bài, mình hay để ý cách họ triển khai và lập luận ideas, có thêm góc nhìn về 1 topic, cách diễn đạt và các collocations hay. (mọi người nhớ học collocations sẽ tốt cho writing lắm ạ).
Tuy nhiên việc tham khảo trên mạng mình nghĩ cũng hơi rủi ro ở chỗ: Thị trường IELTS giờ hơi tùm lum, bài mẫu nhiều vô kể và mỗi người viết mỗi kiểu. Chưa bàn tới ai viết đúng sai, khi mình chưa vững cách học mà đối mặt nhiều nguồn thông tin quá dễ loạn và hoang mang, không biết nên theo ai. Nên các bạn có tham khảo nhớ bình tĩnh sáng suốt tí nha hehe. Riêng mình thì hay theo 2 kênh tin tưởng là IELTS Liz và IELTS Simon (đây là 2 giáo viên/ex-examiner bản xứ chuyên về IELTS luôn).

- Về luyện tập:
Không như Listening và Reading làm xong có thể xem được thang điểm liền, mình nghĩ môn viết hơi khó tự đánh giá bản thân, nên rất cần có một người giáo viên hoặc tiền bối, ai đó bạn tin tưởng sửa bài và góp ý. Ở lần thi gần nhất mình may mắn được chữa bài bởi một người chị có tâm và nhận được nhiều lời khuyên hữu ích nên mau tiến bộ lắm hehe.

- Về quản lý thời gian:
Cái này mình nghĩ cũng quan trọng lắm í. Vì ở lần thi đầu tiên mình không control tốt, viết lố mất 35 phút cho task 1, đến task 2 chỉ còn 25 phút nên làm vội làm vàng, chưa chốt được thân bài 2 đã phải chuyển vội sang kết bài cho kịp. Kết quả là bài bị đầu voi đuôi chuột í, và tất nhiên cũng không kịp dò lại bài luôn :<

Sau này mình chia ra như sau: Task 2 mình dành 5 phút lên ideas – 30 phút viết – 5 phút dò lại bài. Task 1 mình phân tích đề 5 phút – viết 12 phút – dò 3 phút. Vì lên ideas/phân tích đề tốt đến khâu viết sẽ suôn sẻ hơn. Ngoài ra thì viết xong có dành thời gian dò lại giúp mình tránh được những lỗi ngớ ngẩn, đặc biệt là band 7.0+ cần chú ý khoảng “produce frequent error-free sentences” (viết câu không lỗi ngữ pháp) nên càng cần rà soát kĩ ạ.

3. Speaking:
- Đầu tiên mình xem kĩ format đề và band descriptors để biết ở thang điểm mình đặt target người ta yêu cầu những gì, rồi từ đó tìm cách học và tiếp cận phù hợp.

- Sau đó mình tham khảo các nguồn để học thêm về từ vựng, cách trả lời. Các nguồn mình tham khảo là: các videos trên Youtube của thầy Đặng Trần Tùng (IELTS Speaking 9.0, 4 lần thi 9.0 overall), thầy Datio (IELTS Speaking 9.0, 8.5 overall) – mình thích xem thầy này lắm tại thấy thầy phát âm hay mà clip thú vị nữa hehe. Còn GV bản xứ thì có kênh Youtube của thầy Keith tên là English Speaking Success – thầy dễ thương mà làm nhiều clips dạy IELTS lắm í. Hoặc bạn có thể xem cuốn 31 High-Scoring Formulas to Answer Every IELTS Speaking Questions của Johnathan, Oliver, Adrian để học cách trả lời theo các dạng câu hỏi cũng okie nè.

- Nếu được, các bạn hãy xem sơ qua bộ Forecast (bộ dự đoán đề speaking theo quý) nhé. Hông phải tụi mình học tủ hay phụ thuộc gì, chỉ là để có sự chuẩn bị tốt hơn thôi á. Vì trong bộ đề có những đề dị dị kiểu như: “Describe a time when you looked at the sky” (Tả 1 lần bạn nhìn lên trời” ?!? :D). Giả bộ có ai tự nhiên kêu mình tả bằng tiếng Việt Nam mình còn kiểu “Ủa gì dạ trời ?!?” á :)) Bình thường đi ngoài đường lâu lâu nhìn lên coi mây có đen hông, trời có xanh hông thôi, nay đùng cái kêu tả bài dài 2 phút. Vậy nên mình tham khảo trước để lỡ gặp đề như nào cũng đỡ sang chấn tâm lý, mà tâm lý bình ổn rồi thì dễ đảm bảo được fluency. Ngoài ra nếu siêng hơn nữa, bạn có thể tính toán trước ý tưởng sẽ nói, từ vựng và cấu trúc hay cho mỗi topic, để maximize được độ lưu loát và performance nói chung á.

Bên cạnh đó, chủ đề nào mình thấy tương tự mình hay gộp đề chung luôn cho khoẻ. Ví dụ cũng là tả người, đợt đó mình có 3 đề:
1. Describe someone in your family who you really admire. (người mình ngưỡng mộ)
2. Describe a person to whom you are very close in your family (người mình thân trong gia đình)
3. Describe an interesting old person (người già thú vị)
Mình thấy ok cũng đều là tả người. Xong rà soát trí nhớ xem có ai có đủ những đặc điểm đó không. → Nhớ ra có ông nội là người già, sống cùng nhà thân thiết nè, ông nội làm vườn giỏi quá ngưỡng mộ ông nội nè, ông nội kể chuyện hay thú vị nè. → Ok vậy tả ông nội cho 3 đề luôn.

Look Away from the Wait

“He said, “God’s Kingdom is as if a man should cast seed on the earth, and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, he doesn’t know how. For the earth bears fruit: first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the fruit is ripe, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”” (Mark‬ ‭4:26-29‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Have you ever tried an exercise called “wall squats”? You basically lean your back against a wall, and bend your knees until you are squatting with your legs in a right angle bend.

Amilee and I do this exercise often now as part of our workout routine.

I notice how the ‘burn’ from this exercise is much more torturous when I stare at the countdown timer (we squat for a minute at the end of our workout). However if I distract myself by reading things, observing my surroundings, or looking at Mae playing in the living room, the one minute passes by easily. If I can hold my smartphone while squatting, I think I can last for many minutes.

When we are obsessing over the wait, it can be very painful. Time seems to crawl at a snail’s pace, and the frustration builds quickly.

God likes ways of progress that we cannot comprehend. That way, we cannot claim the glory, and we won’t be able to obsess over the waiting period.

In the passage above, the man sleeps and rises night and day, going on with his daily life, but the seed is still growing and eventually it bears fruit.

As long as you are receiving the good seeds of God’s word, you can be sure that a harvest is on the horizon.

Obsessing over the waiting process is painful, so just focus on Jesus and enjoy God’s word in the meantime. God is working on your life, even if the progress is not obvious.

You may not understand how your problems or troubles can be resolved, but God is wise and able to turn your situation around easily.

A prolonged waiting period is not wasted time when you have been growing in God’s word.

God can restore you for all those barren years in one fell swoop. One moment of His favor can accomplish more than a lifetime of labor.

Harvest time is coming for sure, so praise God and use your waiting time to do what really matters: receiving the precious treasure of His wisdom and sharing the Gospel to win souls, in the way that the Holy Spirit leads you.

Stay joyful in the Lord, and be filled with His shalom peace. Have a blessed week ahead!

The Holy Spirit Will Never Leave You

“Now Yahweh’s Spirit departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh troubled him. Saul’s servants said to him, “See now, an evil spirit from God troubles you.” (1 Samuel‬ ‭16:14-15‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

When Saul kept sinning against God by disobeying His instructions through prophet Samuel, the Holy Spirit departed from Saul. In its place, an evil spirit was allowed to pester Saul. God had removed His hand of protection from Saul and he no longer had the anointing of a king.

“Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all of my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. Don’t throw me from your presence, and don’t take your holy Spirit from me.” (Psalms‬ ‭51:9-11‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

When David sinned by committing adultery with Bathsheba and conspired to murder her husband Uriah, God rebuked him through the prophet Nathan, and David was sorrowful. He wrote the words in the psalm above. David was so afraid that God would remove the Holy Spirit from him, just like He did to Saul.

Under the Law, if someone sins, the Holy Spirit can depart from him. The Law is a covenant whereby God’s presence, anointing, and blessings depended on man’s obedience.

I watched a sermon video the other day of Katherine Kuhlman preaching a nonsensical message, with “take not Your Holy Spirit from me” as a focus. She also said that if we desired the power of the Holy Spirit and to see miracles, we have to ‘pay the price’.

“Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, “I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.” So that with good courage we say, “The Lord is my helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?”” (Hebrews‬ ‭13:5-6‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

As far as I know, God has promised to never leave or forsake us in any way. He will never remove His Holy Spirit from us.

On top of that, the blood that Jesus shed at the cross is what paid the full price for us to have the Holy Spirit and the fullness of His power. We could not pay the price and that is why Abba God sent Jesus to pay it on our behalf.

“I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever,— the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him, neither knows him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you.” (John‬ ‭14:16-17‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Read Jesus’ words above. Under Grace, the Holy Spirit will “be with you forever”—not just until the next time you sin. It is not based on your obedience, but the obedience of Christ at the cross.

Do not let anyone bring you into the bondage of wrong believing, no matter how famous they are. We must know the Scriptures so that we will not be deceived.

Need help understanding the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John correctly through the lens of Grace? I know how intimidating reading the four gospels can be. When I was a new believer, some passages in there were just frightful and discouraging.

The reason was because I did not know how to rightly divide the Word based on the covenants. I thought everything in there was directed at me.

For example, Jesus said that if you eye causes you to sin, pluck it out, for it is better for you to enter Heaven without eyes than to have your entire being cast into the fire of Hell. Are we supposed to pluck our eyes out when we sin? Are we supposed to cut off our arms and legs like Jesus said? We need to understand the important reason why He said what He did. There is a purpose that you won’t understand if you have no context or background knowledge of the whole Bible.

Stemming from their recent collaboration with the Japanese band toe, Elephant Gym’s new single “Go Through the Night” fluidly interpolates the classic toe song “Two Moons” into their unique scene where reality intertwines with dreamworld illusions.

Peppered with chopped samples of the acoustic guitar from “Two Moons,” the Taiwanese trio’s expansion on their beloved song is stamped with KT Chang’s signature basslines that twist nimbly into her brother Tell’s gorgeous piano melodies. While glued together through drummer Tu Chia-Chin’s tactful, pinpoint-precise drumming, the song maintains a dreamlike air, with passages shifting inexplicably and abruptly in a way that still feels natural.

This blurring of boundaries between Elephant Gym’s dreamscape and reality is the central theme of “Go Through the Night,” and doubles as the band’s opening statement for their upcoming album centered on dreams.

I got up at around at 8pm without my alarm clock and then had a some coffeeeee! After munching a pound of grapes (yum yum) I proceeded to cuddle with this smug french cat! SMOOCHIE!
I changed clothes and hit the city to practice some thug yoga in urban Paris while rejoicing at inspirational messages in no other than the city of art, Paris!
Then I walked and walked and walked the streets of Paris leading through narrow passages by romantic fairy tale like buildings and fancy shops and mysterious shops picked up an energy drink because until arriving at the love lock bridge pont de l Archeveche where anyone can bring a padlock and forever lock it in other than the city of love! All this walking made me hungry so I got a whole roasted chicken at a real french rotissoire and it was tres bien! Next I went to the Gardens of Luxembourg which looks like the setting of the perfect princess movie I totally want s house like this! Even more intricate of an architecture was of course the famous Notre Dame which is a pure piece of art, in and out! After visiting the church it was time for afternoon tea at a patisserie filled with yumminess where it was hard to choose from but ultimately I went for the cutest one, the rasperry macaron! Yummy yummy yummy! The contrast of the tart raspberries and creamy custard pudding sandwiched between 2 macaron discs made this dessert my absolute favoruite! Yumyumyum!
Next in Paris Wonderland was the iconic Arc de triomphe! You just have to get a picture there when visiting Paris annnnd also at the Eiffel Tower which looks so much more amazing in real life add it to your bucket list and don't forget the magical moment, the 5 minutes of every hour the Eiffel Tower starts to sparkle and twinkle! Tres magnifique, right? That's what I managed to discover in one day, but knowing that there's still so much more to discover I know I'll have to come again!
