More wet markets in Hong Kong have been transformed into a modern one with free WIFI, better lighting and you can pay by credit card!
Since 2005, the HK government sold many of the government-managed wet markets to link REIT 領展. Business environment indeed has improved and markets have became much more spacious. However, for me, wet markets loses their uniqueness after the renovation, which looks like another supermarket. At the same time, people have to pay a higher price for fresh food and there is also a loss of local shops as a result of the raised rent.
We have visited a few LINK wet markets recently and are still surprised to see a variety of shops inside, including bakeries, shops selling paper offerings, noodles, salted seafood and more.
Some also became a tourist attraction. Let us show you the old Hong Kong-themed Yat Tung Market next time.
But when it comes to my favourite wet market of all, traditional ones will always be at the top of my list, especially open-air market, like the one in Mong Kok.
