“Never take our peace for granted. A strong deterrence is Singapore’s best defence.” – A timely reminder from Minister Ng Eng Hen at yesterday’s Committee of Supply debate.
Eng Hen told the story of Lithuania, a small Baltic state close to Russia. In 2009, Lithuania ended military conscription (their form of NS). It had joined NATO, and assumed that its neighbourhood was peaceful. But after seeing Russia annex the Crimea and the war in Ukraine, Lithuania has now re-introduced conscription to build up its armed forces.
When it comes to defence, we must never let down our guard. As Eng Hen said, by the time danger is upon us, it will be too little and too late to build up a defence.
The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. I salute all our SAF servicemen, who let us sleep peacefully at night.
Here’s an excerpt of Eng Hen’s speech. - LHL
