中國出版的中國藥典中在最新的2020年版本中已經把穿山甲剔除，同年的6月5日中國國家林業和草原局也宣佈將其升級成了國家一級保護野生動物。傳統中醫認為穿山甲善於穿鑿洞穴、開通道路的特性，認為其鱗片有通經活血並幫助產婦通乳的功效，當然，其他反正能夠類比穿鑿洞穴、開通道路的行為都想當然耳推測有作用，也因此穿山甲有很長的一段時間被深信食補的中國人吃到瀕臨絕種。
然而現代研究發現穿山甲鱗片的主要成份僅為普通角質，與人類指甲成份相近，基本上將穿山甲鱗片入藥跟自己咬指甲是相去不遠的，不管是女性的通經活血或是類比男性穿鑿洞穴、開通道路的行為都一樣有效(或是沒效)。
每年二月的第三個周末是國際穿山甲日，這是由國際愛護動物基金會(International Fund for Animal Welfare)發起的活動，雖然只紀念不放假，不過仍可以全民咬一邊指甲、一邊參訪IFAW網站的方式來共襄盛舉。
