⭐️It’s Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! AAPI diplomats are a vital part of the State Department, and especially our AIT operation! All month, we look forward to featuring the important contributions of our AAPI colleagues. Today we are sharing AIT Economic Deputy Chief Arati Shroff’s story with you.
✨Indian Americans are the second largest group of Asian Americans in the United States and have a rich history of forging new paths and traditions in America. My parents were born in India during the time of India’s independence movement and immigrated to the U.S. in the 1970s to pursue higher education and new opportunities. As they raised my siblings and me in America, my parents also instilled in us a sense of “seva,” (or “selfless service” in Sanskrit) to remind us to always help others in need and build and contribute to communities around us.
Alongside celebrating Indian holidays of Diwali and Holi in America, we also embraced the spirit of “seva” and volunteerism during traditional American celebrations of Thanksgiving and Christmas by volunteering at local homeless and food shelters and retirement homes to cheer up those missing their own families and loved ones. This sense of “seva” and service to others left a deep impression on me and is one of the reasons why I joined the U.S. Foreign Service to become a diplomat overseas.
This photo of my family is from my official swearing-in ceremony at the State Department’s Benjamin Franklin reception room in Washington, DC thirteen years ago. I am excited that Asian Americans are increasingly joining careers in public service to represent and preserve American democratic ideals and values. Current U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has certainly blazed a trail for others Asian Americans to follow. — AIT Economic Deputy Chief Arati Shroff (the second one from the right-hand side)

About being an influencer/blogger/KOL/whatever you call
As someone who’s being writing for 6 years and making profit from her own website, during this special time ( asa. jobless ) I finally got time to answer and talk a bit about my career to those people who are interested.
“How can you be a blogger ?” “What makes you want to be a blogger ?” “Why people likes to read your articles instead of other bloggers?”
So, 2014 is the year I started to write, I met 冰蹦拉 :: 美食旅行 in Microsoft as an intern. We were like Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in the movie, just I left her first and she brought me into this blogger’s world.
At first, as a young creature who just graduated from uni. , who studied sociology(all you got is passion trust me lol super fucking innocent). I started my blog for the goal to “change the world”, “let the minority got seen by the majority”. “help people” I kept writing articles about NGOs, Exhibitions, Museums, Homeless, Social Issues and believing as long as I put efforts on them people will love my blog.
After a few months, I realized one thing.
People really don’t give a shit about these issues. hahahahaha.
(You have to know Taiwan has changed a lot in the past 6 years. And I’m happy that is getting better and better.)
So, I had to write about things people want to read to build up the basic page views and followers and so on. I had to write a lot about foods ( which I hated so much to take pictures between or before eating them) and I started to put pictures that have my face and body in my articles too. ( which I also hated a lot. ) I had to learn how to be a proper blogger and influencer and in the same time don’t lost my own personality during the time I’m “blooming”. I have sent so many emails to websites, medias that I like and want to cooperate with them. I have got rejected too. Finally, I made it. I started to receive emails instead of sending them. I started to be the one who can decide how much do I want to get from taking the cases.
After you become a “proper blogger” I personally think this is the most important time.
Because this is the time you really got the chance to “influence” people, to show people what do you think is right. To let people see what you initially want them to see, to affect their idea of traveling, living , reading. thinking.
And this is the time I start to have my own personality back.
And this is the time I start again to promoting things I care, things I think people should care.
From one of the first blogger who’s writing a lot about “solo-traveling” to statistically speaking Taiwan has much more solo travelers in the past 2 years. I imagine I did make some change. From hundreds people who has sent me emails, messages and thank me that without my articles they were unable to have the courage to travel by themselves. I believe that even I’m just a nobody I still and am doing some changes and making influences.
And this is the time I know I can’t not lost my own personality.
Every single article I create represents ME.
And this is the time I know I have to make choices.
Every single opportunity I grab represents WHO I AM.
In the past 2 years, social media has changed a lot. People got less patient about reading, people stop using Facebook. Instead, they fall in love with Instagram , Youtube, Live stream. and clients too. So I have rejected so many cases just because “I want to do the things I like and prefer. ” I don’t know how should I do videos since I don’t even watch them, I hate instagram so much due to its super superficial so I prob. just promote it once a year on my Fans page. No need to mention live stream. Have you seen me smile hahaha
But yea, is challenging. When the whole world is changing, when everyone got e-books you can’t be the only one who’s still going to the libraries. ( True story btw, I’m damn old LOL )
But yea, I have never wanted to be a part of “normal” group. I have never wanted to give up what I think is right to write instead of what I got more money from. I have never wanted to change my personality because people want me to do so.
So I’m still fighting.
So I’m still struggling.
So I can still keep the job I love so much.
So I can say I’m really happy to do it for living.
6years has passed, hopefully I will have 6 years more.

Many of us were all doing great job of delivery food for the poor . But the situation escalating and the order of city lock down valid from tonight which very essential, but at the same time whole bunch of homeless seem to left behind, Even the lottery ticket are ban to sell so daily meal become tricky to them
I come out with an idea of EVERY HOME COOK EXTRA MEAL FOR 4 OTHER NEEDS with very little effort. It needs 1 person who has house in main street work together with 1 friend who stay elsewhere hidden. How it work:
1) A person who has a house in main-street who can reach wander homeless put up the sign board like one in picture and say: WE PROVIDE FOOD 3 MEAL A DAY FOR YOU IN THIS 15 DAYS. Put the table in the front door and put the food there, do zero contact with anyone and respect social distant rules as well as our own safety
2) Another friend who has no condition to do so, share the cost to sponsor for 3 persons. So every 2 families support 4 homeless and needs.
3) Until we have 4 person come to get the sponsor, we keep the signboard and only support that 4 person continue in 15 days, 3 meals a day
WHY I THINK OF THIS IDEA
1. We can't blame the gov that lock down and (seem) left behind the homeless and poor (We may don't know what they do to help this sector) because this is necessary for the situation. But we can do something to support
2. When you cook, cook for 4 more persons is not heavy load, something that we can do, and we join effort with the resources that available, those who has money put money, those who stay in front put the effort to cook
3. We share the responsibility and work load, no need to expect from any organization, JUST 1 HELP 1 MORE. And immediate, no brainstorming, no meeting and agreement
4. We can keep to distancing while helping the others, and help them also limit their contact with many place by keep coming only to 1 places
WE CAN ALSO HELP ANIMAL
Many stray cats and dogs which fed by street vendors, street living, are now no more resources. Please give them cat/dog food, ask them to go around and help the animals too
Simple work, no effort, and save each others through this difficult time
What expat can do? Do not sponsor me, but find a friend who has house in main-street and make the team work, spread around the country. No money waste, no food waste until someone is really need it.
If we don't have much friend who can ask to do so, let's gather At Saigon Corona Support Network, we has been doing a few actions to support this period and we may come out with more idea
