A big year coming up for Team McDonalds in 2018!
We would like to announce the addition of our Continental Team to the McDonalds Downunder Community.
The ability to take the next step to Continental level has come to fruition due to the continued hard work of Team Founder Gary Wardrop and support of some great sponsors namely McDonalds Gold Coast, as well as new sponsors and resources from fellow QLD based team Futuro Pro Cycling.
The Continental Team will be run by Director Sportif Garry Elliott, Assistant Director Tom Coates and Team Manager Gary Wardrop. The teams major focuses in 2018 will be on Oceanic and Asia tour races as well as the development of a strong sustainable pathway for cyclists to develop to a continental level.
Here’s a few words from Garry Elliott.
“I started a development team in 1998 known as Team Downunder. I based the team in Belgium to offer good Australian and New Zealand rider’s opportunities to race at a continental level. In 2016 I merged the team with Kenyan Riders as I saw an opportunity for a non cycling country to gain the same opportunities I had given to other riders in the past. After a dramatic accident at the Tour of Rwanda our 2017 season was non existent as a continental team. Tom Coates set up a team for un signed riders for 2017 (Futuro Pro Cycling). Over the year I knew I needed to get the team back racing overseas as a continental team racing mainly UCI 2.1 and 2.HC races. With the help of Gary Wardrop keeping the development team going in Australia (Team McDonalds Downunder) and Tom Coates (Futuro Pro Cycling) racing in Asia it has been a no brainer. In 2018 I am excited as a team Director to be involved with a world class team. My motto has always been “Don’t Dream, Do” I aim to continue this for many years to come with the help of our fantastic support staff, sponsors and investors.”
The team’s first two races for 2018 will be the Tour of Indonesia and Herald Sun Tour, both UCI 2.1 Tours.
Team McDonalds Downunder through the guidance and leadership of Gary Wardrop has been running since 2015 with a major focus on supporting grass routes cycling in QLD, this will continue in 2018 with our Men’s and Women’s Development and QRTS teams with the focus on build pathways for young cyclists wishing to develop and improve their cycling.
Here’s a few words from Team Manager and Founder of Team McDonalds Downunder, Gary Wardrop
“The relationship with McDonalds Gold Coast and myself started a number of years ago. We’ve been working together for the past 3 years and been quite successful.
Due to the support of McDonalds Gold Coast, and a number of other sponsors and volunteers I believe we are at a point where we can take the next step and create a pathway for our development riders to take their riding to the next level. I am also extremely excited to announce the expansion of our Women’s program, which will be another great addition to the Team McDonalds Downunder community.”
