SonSon is a scrolling shooter based on the traditional Chinese Journey to the West story. You control SonSon the monkey boy (player 1) or TonTon the pig man (player 2). As the screen scrolls to the right, you can jump up and down platforms and walk back and forth along them. Aside from movement, your only other action is to shoot at the enemies.

SonSon was only released in Japan, but the rest of the world wasn't really missing much. The game is monotonous and dull. You never get any powerups or special abilities, one hit will always kill you, and you see every enemy in the game by the end of the first stage.
