I didn’t meet my father until I was 6 years old. My parents had a comfortable, middle-class life in Shanghai, or as close as you could get under communism. But they always wanted to live overseas, and just before I was born, my dad came to Sydney to set things up. I don’t know why, but in the end, my mother and I didn’t join him until I was 6.

大家好，請教一下。辭典裡看到help的例句
It helped a lot to know that someone understood how I felt.
這句可以理解。to know是不定詞片語修飾helped
It doesn't really help matters knowing that everyone is talking about us.
這句不懂了，knowing用ing的原因是什麼？原本是認為分詞構句，可是knowing改寫回去
的主詞會是it嗎？
我改寫是這樣：
It doesn't really help matters, although we know that everyone is
talking about us.
後面的主詞是we，和前面不一樣，應該不能化減為分詞構句？
還有其他例子，如：
It helped being able to talk about it.
