根據 Merriam-Webster Learner's Dictionary
such as to: not used before a noun: used to say that something has a quality
that results in something
[EX] The evidence is such as to leave no doubt of his guilt.
= The evidence is such that there can be no doubt of his guilt.
[EX] Her excitement was such that she could hardly contain herself.
= She was so excited that she could hardly contain herself
所以你原句 "His illness is such as to cause anxiety." 指的是 "生病的程度嚴重所
以造成焦慮"。
根據 Oxford Advanced English Learner's Dictionary 的定義:
so as to do something: with the intention of doing something
[EX] We went early so as to get good seats.
所以 "so as to V" 表達 "意圖;為了"。
結論就是，"such as to V"的 "such"用來表達前面事物的程度，如 "nature" (本質) [1]
，"quality " (品質) "depth" (深度) [2]， "effect" (效果) [3]，甚至
