The third Taiwan Strait Crisis, which occurred in 1996, was precipitated by a series of missile tests conducted by the People’s Republic of China in the waters surrounding Taiwan. From March 8 -11, U.S. President Bill Clinton dispatched two aircraft carriers, the USS Nimitz and USS Independence, to patrol the area off the Taiwan Strait.
