《紐約時報》的影評人六月選出了25部21世紀迄今的最佳電影，其中有兩部台灣導演的作品入選，分別是侯孝賢的《最好的時光》與楊德昌的《一一》。美國觀眾初次有機會在戲院看到楊德昌的電影就是2000年的《一一》，那是他的電影首次在美國發行上映。遺憾的是楊德昌導演在2007年病逝，《一一》也成為他的遺作。2011年，紐約的林肯中心電影協會為楊德昌舉行了完整的回顧展。楊德昌的一些早期作品，包括《青梅竹馬》(1985)、《牯嶺街少年殺人事件》(1991)，也陸續經由「電影基金會」（Film Foundation）修復完成。該基金會是由美國導演馬丁‧史柯西斯等人為保護和保存電影歷史所成立。好的電影能超越時空和語言的疆界。流浪了17年之後，《一一》最近終於回到了楊導成長的家鄉，回到他用畢生心力描繪的地方。

In June, New York Times critics named 25 best films of the 21st century, so far. Two films by Taiwan directors made the list – “Three Times” by Hou Hsiao-hsien and “Yi Yi” by Edward Yang. Yi Yi was U.S. moviegoers’ first encounter with Yang’s work in theaters when the film was distributed in the United States in 2000. Sadly, Edward Yang passed away in 2007, and Yi Yi became his last film. In 2011, the Film Society of the Lincoln Center in New York City presented a complete retrospective of Yang’s work. Some of Yang’s earlier films, including “Taipei Story” and “A Brighter Summer Day,” were restored by the Film Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by American film director Martin Scorsese and other filmmakers dedicated to protecting and preserving motion picture history. Good films transcend time and language boundaries. Seventeen years after its first release, now “Yi Yi” is finally home, meeting with audiences from the place where Edward Yang grew up, the place he depicted in his timeless films.
