Does stress affect your liver health?
Manage your stress correctly
This global pandemic has not only threatened our health but also disrupted our daily routine and social life. This has inevitably affected our emotions and triggered anxiety. In order to relieve stress, we should also soothe the liver. But how does stress affect the health of our liver?
According to Chinese Medicine, the liver governs our emotions, and any negative emotions would hurt the liver. The liver ensures the circulation of the Meridians, and if the organ is disrupted, we will experience emotional distress, headache, stomachache, insomnia, difficulty passing stools, flatulence, and constant burping and sigh.
Basically, ‘soothing the liver’ in Cantonese describes methods that can help us de-stress and improve our emotional well-being. By doing so, our liver can perform its functions more efficiently.
When we are stressed, we will experience the stagnation of the qi. This has to do with the changes in our emotions as well. Besides learning to manage our emotions and relieve stress, we can also consume ingredients that can improve the circulation of the qi. These ingredients are white radish, dried citrus peel, five-finger fig root and kumquat. We can also opt for floral tea such as rose, jasmine, bergamot and chamomile, as they can help improve the circulation of the qi and blood as well as clear the stagnation in the liver.
When we are reaching our breaking point, try massaging the He Gu and Tai Chong acupoints, as it can help improve the circulation of the qi and blood, regulate our emotions, and relieve stress symptoms like headache, dizziness, red eyes, and pain in the eyes.
4 acupoints to counter negative energy:

Headache after period?
“My head tends to hurt for several days right after my period, and my body would be quite weak. How can I improve this condition?”
CheckCheckCin: If headaches develope after the menstruation period, the pain is dull, accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, pale skin, fatigue and palpitation, this is probably due to blood deficiency. The blood is unable to reach the head. Frequent late nights, postpartum bleeding, over-exercising and fatigue can also harm the yin in the blood.
Individuals with this kind of body condition will have a lower volume of menstrual fluid, which normally appears to be pale red. Consume an appropriate amount of ingredients that can nourish the qi and the blood, such as red bean, red date, Chinese date, longan meat, Codonopsis root and Ganoderma lucidum (‘ling zhi’). You may also drink herbal tea that can replenish and nourish the blood a week before period. Be more watchful of your diet; avoid eating raw and cold food, as well as those that are oily and hard to digest.
According to the Chinese medicine theories, ‘staring at something for an extended period can damage the blood’, so if you have been facing the computer screen throughout the day, it is best to avoid staring at your smartphone after working hours.
Red date tea with dried longan
Effects: Nourishes and replenishes blood. Relieves headache, dizziness, fatigue and heart palpitations due to asthenic qi and blood.
Ingredients: 4 Red Dates, 10g Dried Longan, 10g Gastrodia
Preparation: Cut and place all ingredients into thermos, rinse with hot water and add in hot water and steep for 20 minutes until aroma develops.
This tea can be re-browed until flavour weakens. For best results, drink consecutively for 2-3 days. Consume 1 week before mensuration.
✔Beauty Tea Recommendation:
Blushing
Ingredients: Red Date, Dried Longan, Wolfberry, Chrysanthemum, Sweet Osmanthus, American Ginseng, Maojian Tea, Rock Sugar
Effects: Nourishes blood and calms the mind. Asthenic cold spleen and stomach, pale complexion and cold limbs.
✔Rice Water Recommendation:
Red Bean Rice Water
Ingredients: Red Rice, White Rice, Red Bean
Effects: Achieves rosy complexion, calms the mind and improves sleep and replenishes blood and nourishes the stomach.

Overcoming premenstrual syndrome
Have you ever noticed your female friends, relatives or even yourself being constantly annoyed by everything around you for a week on a monthly basis? Don’t worry, you are neither going ‘crazy’ nor experiencing ‘personality disorder’.
Have you heard of PMS? PMS stands for premenstrual syndrome, which refers to the psychological and emotional discomfort, and behavioral change before menstruation begins. Some of the more commonly known symptoms are bad temper and fatigue; certain individuals might develop acne and experience diarrhea. As of now, up to 200 symptoms related to PMS have been identified!
From the perspective of Chinese medicine, the problem with premenstrual discomfort originates from the imbalance in the liver, spleen and kidney; emotional stress and fatigue might further aggravate the situation. It could also be due to the person’s body condition. For instance, women with qi and blood deficiency might experience dizziness and limb numbness during period; women with the damp-heat body condition, when going through menstruation, might develop canker sore, acne and experience water retention.
You will need to observe the signals your body sends out, in order to identify the appropriate treatment. Start by observing your diet to improve the body condition. If need be, consult registered and licensed Chinese medicine practitioner.
Some common PMS symptoms:
1. Weight gain
2. Fatigue
3. Headache
4. Water retention
5. whiteheads and acne
6. Breast swelling and pain
7. Waist pain
8. Bloating
9. Diarrhea
10. Constipation
Emotional reaction and behavior change when experiencing PMS
1. Unstable emotions
2. short-tempered
3. Anxious
4. Unable to focus
5. Forgetful
6. Nervous
7. Tends to cry easily
8. Depression
9. Hypersomnia /insomnia
10. Binge eating(especially foods that are high in sugar and fat)
If you seem to be easily irritated on days prior to the beginning of the menstruation cycle, try drinking herbal tea that will soothe the liver, or dragon fruit rose tea, 3 – 7 days before menstruation, to soothe the liver and relieve stress. If symptoms persist, do consult Chinese medicine practitioner for medical advice.
✔Beauty Tea Recommendation:
Stress
Ingredients: Rose, Sweet Osmanthus, Fingered Citron, Fingered Citron Flower
Effects: Promotes qi circulation and relieves stagnation. Suitable for busy lifestyle, frequent sighing, stressfulness and menstrual discomfort
