Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he would resign, citing his worsening health, ending the reign of the man who held the top job longer than anyone else.
Mr. Abe first became prime minister in 2006 and resigned a year later, citing the same health problem. He returned to office on Dec. 26, 2012. This week, he set the record for longest consecutive time in office for any prime minister since Japan created a European-style government in the late 19th century.
In nearly eight years in office, he bolstered the nation’s defense with new weapons, new amphibious forces and a law allowing Japanese forces more freedom to maneuver outside the nation’s borders.
Mr. Abe’s effort to revive Japan’s economy, known as Abenomics, met with mixed results and took a blow near the end of his term from the Covid-19 pandemic.
“A major reason why the Abe government’s support ratings have held up for so long is the employment environment. Young people have no real concerns. They can get jobs and salaries have increased,” Mr. Seko said.
