你了解耳垢嗎？
耳垢，學名耵聹，俗稱耳屎，身體的分泌物之一，平日我們不會察覺它的存在，直到耳朵出現問題，例如聽力下降、耳塞時，就會懷疑：是耳垢太多的原因嗎？耳垢被我們視為廢物，其實它有保護耳道的作用，可以黏附外來的污穢物。耳垢通常聚積於耳道外圍，可以細分為乾濕兩種——糠耳和油耳，耳垢乾燥呈片狀的稱為糠耳；耳垢比較濕潤黏著耳道的稱為油耳。
當我們咀嚼和說話時，會令耳垢脫落並且自行排出耳道，所以正常情況下不需要清理耳垢，只需清潔外耳即可。適量耳垢可以滋潤耳道及殺菌，經常清理耳道內的耳垢會令耳道受刺激而產生更多耳垢，甚至使耳道受傷出現發炎等情況。不少人有用棉花棒清潔耳道的習慣，反而會將耳垢越推越入，耳垢壓著耳膜情況嚴重更會影響聽力，其實靠空氣流動讓耳道的水氣蒸發就可以，不用特別清潔。
耳垢太多而出現聽力減弱、頭暈、耳仔痛、耳塞或發出臭味等症狀，中醫稱為耵聹栓塞，建議尋求醫生協助，用專業儀器協助檢查耳道狀況及處理，不建議自行用耳屎挖，因為在未能看清楚耳道的情況下亂挖有危險。

Earwax is a bodily secretion. We generally do not notice it until there is an issue, such as hearing loss or clogged ear. You may wonder if it is related to too much earwax. We do not think much of earwax. It, however, has the function of protecting the ear canal and can capture dirt from outside. Earwax usually accumulates outside the ear canal and can be subdivided into two types: dry and wet. Dry earwax is dry and flaky. Wet earwax is wet and sticks on the ear canal.
When we chew and talk, it may cause earwax to fall off and discharge from the ear canal itself, so it is not necessary to clean the earwax under normal circumstances. It is suitable to clean the outer ear only. Appropriate amount of earwax can moisturise the ear canal and kill bacteria. Frequently cleaning the earwax in the ear canal may cause the ear canal to be stimulated to produce more earwax, and even cause inflammation of the ear canal. Many people use cotton sticks to clean the ear canal. That will push the earwax further into the ear canal instead. The earwax is pressed against the eardrum and the hearing can be affected in serious cases. Air flow can make the water vapor of the ear canal evaporate without extra cleaning.
Symptoms such as hearing loss, dizziness, ear pain, clogged ear or odors caused by too much earwax is impacted cerumen in Chinese medicine. You should seek medical assistance to check the condition of the ear canal with professional equipment and management. It is not suggested to use earwax remover by yourself as it is dangerous when you remove earwax without seeing the ear canal clearly.
