Yesterday, I was honored to be invited by Prudential Malaysia for their 2020 Kick Off event. There were more than 6000 people in the hall. Massive. I was asked by the host several 'motivation' questions relating to my badminton career. And one questions which interested me was " which match do you think is Lee Chong Wei's most difficult match?
I paused for a while. I knew my answer straightaway but I’m not sure if that’s the right motivating answer. Some would say it’s the 2006 Malaysia Open final. Some would think it’s the crazy 2011 BWF World Championship final. Many thought it’s the 2012 Olympics final. However to me, the most difficult match has to be 2016 Rio Olympics semifinal against Lin Dan.
It was the Olympic stage. I knew the match was coming. Before the Games, both Lin and I knew this will be the last Olympic game we will be able to play at the highest level. No disrespect to other players, no one came close to our level except the uprising Chen Long. We were so sure we would meet in the semifinal.
I was the higher ranked player. And I won my previous two matches against him, both in China surprisingly. But this time was different. It was the Olympics. The greatest sporting event which I’ve lost two finals before. You can ask me to run laps after laps. You can ask me to do drills after drills. They are not as tiring as the mental pressure that built up before the game.
19th August 2019, both of us entered to court. Flashback of my previous losses came to mind. Malaysian fans were so loud chanting my name. I started questioning myself “ What the hell are you thinking so much?” . As everyone was expecting me to win due to my higher rank, I told myself “ You had lost two times. So play with nothing to lose”.
That was when I let loose all my emotions and mental blocks. And we both played a great game. At last, I beat my greatest enemy, Lin Dan on an Olympic stage.
I’m not so sure it was a motivating story. I just want to say if you never give up , you will achieve it one day with focus and determination.

Also I took the chance to meet with old friends from all around the world . Safe journey to wherever you go . And good luck in Singapore if you participate .
When I reached home last night , I showed my two boys , Kingston and Terence the photos I took . When I showed them the photo of Lin , Chen and I on the podium , Terence shouted ,” Pa , it looks the same like the one you placed on the cabinet “. It was the photo of us three during 2012 olympics . I was shaken . Despite being born in 2015 , Terence has never seen me play in the Olympics . I hope your dad can show to you next year , my Son

Dare to be a Champion
Author: Lee Chong Wei
Publisher: Bukuganda Digital & Publication
‘To maintain this ranking, I must get up at five o'clock every morning and press on repeatedly with sweat and tears.’
‘As an athlete, you must always bear in mind that your opponents will never let the grass grow under their feet, so you cannot afford to relax even a bit in training.’
While the memories are still fresh over the 2016 Olympic badminton men’s singles final between Chen Long from China and Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia, the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games are already opening next summer, and it’s time to enter the Olympic qualification stage, where top badminton players around the world strive to secure a place in the competition.
Malaysian badminton superstar Lee Chong Wei publicly announced that he had been suffering from nasopharyngeal cancer last year. Although he has since recovered, the triple silver medallist at the Olympic Games is now 36 years old, and next year’s Olympics is likely to be his last one. With his chances of participation hanging in the balance, it will be sad to see Lee calling it a day without competing in this next Olympic Games.
Looking at his career statistics, Lee Chong Wei has won countless championships, and has been ranked the world’s number one for an unprecedented record of 350 weeks in total. In addition to the Olympics, however, Lee somehow has never won a championship title in many major badminton tournaments, including the World Championships, Thomas Cup, Sudirman Cup and Asian Games. Being labelled the ‘Uncrowned King of Badminton’, he might have even been trying to ridicule himself by naming his autobiography published in 2012 Dare to be a Champion.
When Dare to be a Champion was published, Lee was about to compete in the 2012 London Olympics. At that time, could he have expected to live with the fate of playing second fiddle not only in that Olympics, but also in the following Rio Olympics? In any case, it is no small feat for a player to win an Olympic medal for Malaysia, which is by no means a sports superpower. As a three-time Olympic silver medallist, Lee truly does deserve to be considered a national hero.
In Dare to be a Champion, Lee recounted his extraordinary experiences during the first half of his life. Although a badminton racket was almost considered a luxury during his poor childhood upbringing, Lee’s passion for badminton did not abate one bit. Regardless of leaving his home for training, competing in foreign countries or facing fierce rivals, his wholehearted enthusiasm made him a formidable competitor who never gives up.

Disclaimer: Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Lin Dan. He is an awesome sportsman and an amazing badminton player. This video just encompasses what I feel I'd like to say to DLCW.

You are a champion
You are a champion and you should know that
Forget the dos and donts, the mistakes and drawbacks
Because what you did that night no other Malaysian could do,
you reunited a country of people, and got a world rooting for you
5th August 2012
Sure, he's got the gold and he took the medal
but u took home hearts that wont fade or go brittle
You took home cheers even in those tears
going out with everything on the line, you blew our minds
with the best game we've seen, that forever will shine
Dato Lee Chong Wei
You stand for everything the Malaysian spirit should be
You take the country to the finals and still say you're sorry?
Dude screw that.
Take that, break that, dump that and trash that
You know what? We're sorry
We're sorry that most of us blabbed about,
the free dessert and the holiday we could do without
We came for the worthless but stayed for your gold
Yes you heard me, your gold
Because that's the story that'll be told
Your story,
and how you did it your way,
the hard way the painful way,
the humble and the right way.
The Lee Chong Wei - way
Because you broke down in that court for a country you think you let down,
but the only thing you did was to let the world know you weren't messing 'round.
People go for medals you go for a nation
Don't say you're sorry, we don't need your explanation
So this goes right out to you, our country's hero.
He's won an accessory, you've won a people.
