香港出現世界上最大嘅海龜?!
上星期六，漁護署接獲報告，有人係西貢水域發現死亡嘅海龜，我地到現場後發現原來係香港好少見嘅棱皮龜(Leatherback sea turtle)！棱皮龜，又名革龜，佢係現存7種海龜中體型最大嘅海龜，成年可長達3米。棱皮龜過往係香港非常少見，佢地背甲非常特別，同其他海龜有明顯分別。
今次哩隻棱皮龜發現時已經好腐爛，難以確定性別，但從體長可以推斷佢尚未成年。我地其後為佢進行影像解剖同傳統解剖，藉此進一步了解哩種係香港非常少見嘅品種。
World largest sea turtle in Hong Kong waters?!
On last Saturday, AFCD received a report of a sea turtle carcass found in Sai Kung waters. When we arrived to this stranding case, we found that it was a leatherback sea turtle, which is rarely found in HK waters! Leatherback sea turtle, also named as lute or leathery turtle, is the largest species among all the existing sea turtles. Adult can grow up till 3m long. Leatherback sea turtles are seldomly found in HK waters. Their carapace is very special with different morphology compared to other sea turtle species.
The condition of this leatherback sea turtle was quite decomposed, thus we were unable to determine its sex from appearance. However, we could still identify that it was not yet sexually mature according to the measured body length. We also took this valuable opportunity to conduct virtopsy and necropsy to understand more about this rare species in HK waters.
