【LifeinTaiwan is looking for an intern】
Hello everyone,
I love being a Youtuber. I love the freedom it gives me and appreciate the connection it gives me to my ever-so-supportive audience. I began the channel 4 years ago and never imagined it would be more than a small hobby or side project that I would do in my spare time in order to allow my son in South Africa, William, to watch his Daddy sharing his Life in Taiwan with him and anyone else who wants to watch.
I have been so blessed that although the channel and myself have had some ups and downs over the years, the channel has grown to a size where I feel that I am now able to offer somebody the opportunity to join me and share the journey I am taking through the Youtube world. For 4 years, over countless hours I have created 300 videos and grown to the channel to a quarter of a million subscribers all by myself. Video conception, writing, planning, producing, filming, editing, subtitling and re-editing have all been done by myself with the occasional welcome assistance from friends who have stepped in when I have required help. Thank you to everyone who has helped me get to this point.
However, it has recently become apparent that I need help. The constant strive for ideas and pressure to create interesting, watchable videos has pushed me to the limit of what one person can do in order to provide the best content for the viewers here in Taiwan and around the world. This is in addition to the fact that as a foreigner in Taiwan, I often find myself needing the help of a Taiwanese person to prevent making some basic mistakes that would otherwise go unnoticed.
Therefore, in order to show you a higher level of content and better quality videos, I have decided to invite an intern to join me! 💪

What does having green facial veins mean?
Chinese Medicine theories believe the condition of our face would reflect the health of our internal organs. Besides the complexion, some people may have green veins on their faces.
For instance, a toddler might have green veins on his or her nose bridge, and according to urban legend, a toddler with this condition would tend to throw tantrums. Is it real?
The green veins are vessels that transport blood from all body parts back to the heart. They become more apparent when the veins cannot perform their functions optimally. From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, this has to do with the stagnation of the qi and blood stasis, which can disrupt the circulation of the qi and the blood.
Individuals with weak qi and blood do not have sufficient energy to support the circulation, and that is how green veins appear on the surface of the skin. The best way to treat this problem is to invigorate the blood and clear blood stasis according to the body constitution.
Chinese Medicine believes that children’s spleen and stomach have yet to fully develop, and the green veins that appear on the nose bridge is associated with the weakness of these two internal organs. This also means they are prone to experience discomfort in the intestines and stomach.
Since the children have not developed the ability to talk, the only way for them to express themselves is through excessive wailing. Parents should try to improve the functions of their children’s spleen and stomach by observing their diet, as proper diets could strengthen a person’s body constitution.

Beware of high-sodium foods
Hypertension is a chronic disease related the pressure of blood pushing against the arteries. There are two types of hypertension — primary and secondary. Secondary hypertension has apparent causes, for instance, pregnancy, endocrine disorders, and kidney problems. On the other hand, primary or essential hypertension is associated with hereditary, age, and weight.
If both parents suffer from hypertension, their children have a 60% chance of inheriting it. Chances of having hypertension would also increase with age. If you are at risk, do observe and adjust your lifestyle and dietary habits to keep hypertension at bay.
People always tell us that eating extremely salty food can cause hypertension. The main culprit of hypertension is actually sodium, which does not only exist in salt, but also foods that are not even salty. Therefore, keep an eye on the nutritional label of foods before buying them. The World Health Organization suggests that an adult should consume less than 2000mg of sodium per day. This is equivalent to less than one teaspoon of salt.
Foods that are high in sodium:
White bread — contains salt and acidity regulator like sodium acetates
Noodles — cup noodles and some dried noodles have high sodium content
Roasted foods — spices and seasonings are ingredients used to enrich the flavor of roasted foods
Sauces — soy sauce, oyster sauce, chicken stock powder, braised and brined sauce, fish sauce, and shrimp paste are all high in sodium
Canned foods — sodium is added to canned foods to extend their shelf life
Soup — soup that is rich in flavor normally contains a lot of sodium
Pickled foods — ham, hot dog, luncheon meat, pickled mustard, and salted egg are high-sodium foods
Snacks — potato chips, prawn crackers, biscuits, and even dried shredded squid are high in sodium

For this episode, we headed back to Sofitel Sentosa to demolish a 30-inch Pizza SOLO! The Cliff strives to serve authentic Italian cuisine in the form of pizzas, pastas and other Italian classics with a fantastic ambience in the form of a cliffside/poolside view. With their handmade pastas and pizza being highly recommended, we sought out their assistance to create a pizza fit for Zermatt and they delivered with probably the largest pizza served in terms of diameter in Singapore.
A product of much trial and error, the resulting monster 30-inch pizza comprised of 4 different flavours, fennel sausage, margherita, calabrese and tonno picante, with 1 per quadrant. Staying true to Italian pizzas, toppings were light but flavourful and the pizza was thinly crusted, unlike most common pizza chains with overflowing toppings and weighty crusts. The chef’s knowledge and ability were apparent with the excellent crust, stretched thinly into a crunchy and airy base. All 4 flavours were excellent but the calabrese would be sure to appeal to Singaporeans due to its stronger flavour profile of chilli and olives. I especially liked the fennel sausage pizza with its herbal note and delicious Italian sausage topping.
I initially thought this challenge would be easy even as a solo challenge, but the crust got to me slightly towards the end. My crew tried the normal portions of Calabrese ($28) and Fennel Sausage ($26), thoroughly enjoying them. This is genuinely one of the better pizzas I have had in Singapore due to its choice of high-quality ingredients and respect for authenticity. Do visit The Cliff at Sofitel Sentosa for a wonderful and authentic Italian experience.

In this video, we whipped up the Ultimate Singaporean Breakfast in Neo’s Kitchen. Since so many of you have requested an Economic Bee Hoon video, I decided to make it a challenge but with a twist. A traditional plate would consist of Bee Hoon/Egg Noodles with a bunch of sides like luncheon meat, eggs and stir-fried vegetables, with a healthy dollop of sambal. However, I came across OmniMeat, a plant-based alternative to your common meats, that offered OmniMeat Luncheon, an imitation luncheon meat. They also offered OmniMeat Strip, which is their equivalent to the sliced cuts of meat commonly used in stir-fries. There is a lucky draw for FairPrice gift vouchers, details are below!
For my challenge, I piled on at least 4 portions each of Bee Hoon and Fried Egg Noodles, together with 9 eggs and 3 packets worth of OmniMeat Luncheon onto my giant plate. My mum helped to cook the egg noodles and also stir-fried the OmniMeat Strip with some vegetables, which I added onto the platter. To round it off, I added a healthy serving of sambal.
The luncheon meat had an almost identical texture and colour to real luncheon meat and it would be difficult to tell the difference at a glance. Flavour-wise, it did taste different but not in a bad way. Luncheon meat normally tastes very salty and processed while OmniMeat Luncheon tasted “cleaner” and felt more like it was comprised of actual ground meat. The OmniMeat strips were pleasant and chewy but it was apparent that it was not meat in the flavour. However, it was far superior to most mock meats I have tried with a palatable taste and rich smoky flavour.
This was a straightforward challenge featuring one of Singapore’s most popular breakfast dishes, Economic Bee Hoon. Jazzed up with plant-based meat, an ever-growing trend that is supposed to be better for the environment, this challenge was healthier than most. OmniMeat Luncheon is certainly far healthier than any canned luncheon meat and would be a great addition to your kitchen. Do note that it requires cooking. If you are hosting for Chinese New Year, OmniMeat would be a great option to have in your spread, especially for vegetarian friends and family. OmniMeat also has a range of other Asian-inspired plant-based alternatives that would not be out of place at a Chinese New Year party. OmniMeat can be found at FairPrice and high-end grocery chains island-wide.
