George Karl couldn't have drawn up his 800th win any better -- playing short-handed, making up plays on the fly in timeouts, inclement weather outside.
This was his kind of game. That's why the Nuggets coach was all smiles after getting his milestone victory in Denver's 112-98 win over the Seattle SuperSonics -- his former team -- on Thursday night.
Karl was handed a Denver jersey with No. 800 on it along with the game ball after beating the Sonics to become only the 12th coach in NBA history to reach the 800-win mark.
"Tonight's game was fun because I thought from the minute they went on the court they thought they were going to win the game," said Karl, who's 800-555 in 19 seasons. "Coach (Dean) Smith told me a long time ago that if you can't accept that players win and coaches lose, then don't get into coaching. You can be the greatest coach in the world, but if you don't have players, you aren't going to win in the NBA."
Karl has a superstar in Allen Iverson, who finished with 44 points and 10 assists. Iverson had his highest-scoring game since being acquired by Denver in a trade with Philadelphia on Dec. 19. His season high is 46 against Chicago on Nov. 24.
"He's good," Karl said. "He's better than I thought and I thought he was (darn) good."
After coming out of the lineup with 1:04 remaining, Iverson and Karl had a brief conversation and then a quick hug.
"To be a part of something like that is something to cherish," Iverson said. "It was an honor to help him get that win."
Nothing the Sonics did worked against Iverson. He's now scored 40 or more points in 77 career games, which ties Oscar Robertson for fourth in NBA history.
"He was something," Seattle coach Bob Hill said.
Karl doesn't take any added satisfaction that the win came against a Seattle team that ran him off after the 1997-98 season. Karl said he no longer has any bitterness toward the franchise he helped lead to the NBA finals in 1996.
"This win against Seattle is special because Seattle was a big part of my career," Karl said.
He even improvised a couple of times during the game, making up plays and watching them work to perfection.
"This team just thinks it's going to win even being undermanned," he said.
Karl's first win was Nov. 15, 1984, against Atlanta when he was coaching Cleveland. He'd started the season 0-9 and never thought he'd reach this type of accomplishment.
"When I first started, I thought 250 (games) would be great," he said. "I thought 250 and you'd retire into a college job and coach into the sunset."
Earl Boykins added 24 points, and Reggie Evans had a season-high 18 rebounds for the Nuggets.
Damien Wilkins matched his career high with 26 points, and Luke Ridnour finished with 16 points for the Sonics.
"We just wanted to get out of here tonight," Wilkins said.
Both teams did. Another major snowstorm blanketed Denver on Thursday and the Nuggets and Sonics both made dashes for the airport after the game to get out of town for their road games Friday night. The Nuggets will play in Oklahoma City, and Seattle will travel to Minnesota.
Seattle star Ray Allen didn't make the trip to Denver after his fiancee gave birth to a boy Wednesday, but may rejoin the team Friday night in Minnesota. Allen has been bothered by a right ankle injury that's kept him out of three of the last five games.
Denver's Marcus Camby missed his third straight game with a fractured right finger on his shooting hand. With Nene out as well with a right knee injury, the Nuggets gave Jamal Sampson his third career start. He finished with seven points and nine rebounds.
Denver used its fourth different lineup in four games since Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith were suspended for their roles in a brawl against the New York Knicks on Dec. 16. Denver is 3-1 without Anthony and Smith.
"There's not a whole bunch of pressure," Iverson said of being short-handed. "I just feel like all of us are going to have to do it together. It's going to be a team effort."

Allen Iverson scored 37 points and
Aaron McKie added 11 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds as
the Philadelphia 76ers rebounded from bad loss, and posted a
99-80 victory over the Denver Nuggets.
Iverson hit 14-of-24 shots from the field and made 8-of-12 free
throws as the 76ers rebounded from a 96-89 loss to the New
Jersey Nets and avoided losing three straight games for the
first time this season.
"We got off to a good start at both ends of the court," Iverson
said. "We just kept playing basketball. This game was so tough
because, the previous games we lost leads in the fourth quarter.
I told my teammates `We've been in these situations before and
came out on the short end.' Tonight we learned from our
mistakes and the team responded well tonight."
McKie connected on 5-of-8 shots and fell two rebounds short of
his third triple-double of the season. Tyrone Hill contributed
11 points and Jumaine Jones added 10 and nine boards off the
bench, helping Philadelphia to a 46-41 edge in rebounds.
Iverson, McKie and forward George Lynch all arrived late due to
inclement weather in the Philadlephia area. League officials
pushed the start of the game back an hour to 8:00.
"The funniest thing was that Aaron was going to pick up Allen,"
Philadelphia coach Larry Brown said. "How bad is that? Aaron
came in like 20 (minutes) to 8:00."
Antonio McDyess recorded 28 points and 13 rebounds for his
league-leading 36th double-double for the Nuggets, who shot 40.5
percent (34-of-84). Reserves George McCloud and Kevin Willis
added 13 and 11 as Denver fell to 7-16 on the road.
"The second half we came out and played a lot better
defensively, but they had control from the start," McDyess said.
"Everytime we got to where we wanted to be they scored a basket
or made a good defensive play."
Nick Van Exel and Voshon Lenard, Denver's starting guards,
combined to shoot just 7-of-23 and committed six turnovers. The
pair combined for 36 points in the Nuggets' 105-98 win over the
Sixers in Denver on December 4.
Iverson scored Philadelphia's first seven points and Theo
Ratliff followed with a dunk for a 9-6 lead with 7:43 to go.
Van Exel, who had eight points, nailed a 3-pointer 21 seconds
later.
The Sixers went ahead for good when Iverson grabbed a rebound of
a miss by Jones and hit a short jumper to make it 13-11 with
6:11 remaining in the first. That basket triggered a 16-2 run
that Iverson capped with a jumper for a 27-13 advantage with
2:26 left in the first. Iverson scored seven points in the run
and finished with 16 in the first quarter as Philadelphia built
a 31-17 lead.
"We came out so soft defensively to start the game," Denver
coach Dan Issel said. "That's why we got behind 14 points. Had
we played defense the whole game, like we played in the second
half, we would have been in pretty good shape. You know Allen
is going to come up big. Thirty-seven points is a great effort
for him. You expect him to get his points, but we let other
people score who shouldn't have been scoring."
Iverson scored 22 points in the first half when the Sixers shot
57 percent (25-of-44) and built a 59-45 lead.
Philadelphia did not let the margin fall below double digits
until McCloud hit an 18-footer to cap a 6-0 surge and pull
Denver within 77-69 with 9:17 left in the fourth. But the
Nuggets got no closer as McKie answered with a layup.

Allen Iverson fought through jet lag, car sickness and pregame butterflies that felt more like birds before he finally got to play his first game for the Denver Nuggets.
When his debut with the depleted Nuggets was over Friday night, the feeling was familiar for the former 76er. Another crowd-pleasing performance, 22 points and 10 assists over 39 minutes, wasn't enough to prevent a loss -- 101-96 to the Sacramento Kings.
"I'm glad it's over," Iverson said. "That's the only thing I thought about, just getting the first one by me. I wish it could've ended with a win. I felt it could've ended with a win."
As it turned out, it was another former Philadelphia player, fifth-year guard John Salmons, who was the game's most valuable player. He finished with his first career triple-double -- 21 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists -- to lift the Kings to a satisfying win.
Rough weather in Denver put them in a travel bind, and they arrived at the Pepsi Center only 90 minutes before tipoff, or about the same time Iverson finally made it.
"We will never have a worse travel day than today," Kings coach Eric Musselman said. "Our energy and effort was phenomenal."
The Kings might go down as a trivia answer if Iverson's arrival in the blockbuster trade that sent Andre Miller and Joe Smith to Philadelphia takes the Nuggets where they hope it will.
In his debut, playing on a team with only eight healthy players, the newest Nugget gave the kind of gritty, gutty performance that has become his trademark.
He played 39 minutes after a whirlwind of a day in which he arrived in Denver in the late afternoon, was whisked to the Pepsi Center, passed his physical, took a few jumpers on the practice court then suited up to be on the floor for tipoff.
He spent the first 8:35 on the bench. When he finally came in, he received a standing ovation, and never left the floor.
This was widely considered the biggest trade in Denver sports history since the Broncos brought John Elway to town nearly 25 years ago. It's a trade many think could put the Nuggets -- who have long played second fiddle in this city -- into championship mode.
"They embraced me here," Iverson said of the welcome he received. "It was just a great feeling and it was a feeling I wanted to get. A feeling I hoped to get. It was special to me, something I'll remember and cherish the rest of my life."
During a stretch late in the third quarter, Iverson was at his tiptoeing, no-look-passing best, giving a preview of the difference he can make to this team.
He made a pair of 3-pointers, created an open 15-footer for himself and also had a sweet pass to Linas Kleiza as part of a big run that gave the Nuggets their first lead since early in the first quarter.
The highlight was a tiptoe down the baseline, followed by a no-look pass to Reggie Evans through traffic in the key for an easy bucket.
The game was tied at 87 with 3½ minutes left when the Kings started pulling away with six straight points on a pair of baskets by Salmons and a layup by Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
Iverson would have had 20 assists were it not for the struggles of his new teammates, many of them unused to the minutes they played and none of them accustomed to receiving the kind of passes Iverson throws.
"I was just playing basketball, taking what the defense gave me," Iverson said of the Kings, who played a lot of zone trying to stop Iverson. "When they crowded me, and I saw guys open, I made the right plays."
Iverson finished 9-for-15 and this was one of those rare games in which he may not have shot the ball enough.
Earl Boykins scored 25 points on an 8-for-23 night in which the Nuggets shot 37 percent as a team.
"It was a tough game," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "We really wanted to win it for AI and the team. The courage was good, the commitment was good. It was the little basketball frustrations that slowly built to a level that was difficult to overcome."
Certainly, things will change when Carmelo Anthony returns 13 games from now after serving out his suspension for his fight with the Knicks.
But as it currently stands, the Nuggets need everything from Iverson. They are also missing J.R. Smith -- also on suspension -- and learned that center Marcus Camby could be out a while because of a finger injury he suffered earlier this week.
