Special thanks to State Department English Language Fellow Robert Powell for visiting National Pingtung University on Thursday. With prior teaching experience in New York City, California, South Korea and Brazil, Mr. Powell will spend the next ten months in Taiwan training teachers and teaching English. He will visit National Pingtung University regularly over the next year to lead English teaching workshops and trainings.

「知名的花式滑冰運動員關穎珊曾是弗萊徹法律與外交學院的一員！而更有趣的是我們學校的吉祥物—金寶(Jumbo)，他的歷史可以追溯到1885，馬戲團經紀人兼表演者費尼爾司•泰勒•巴納姆 (電影《大娛樂家》中的人物) 在擔任理事期間將大象金寶的標本捐贈給弗萊徹大學，但1975年在巴納姆大廳的一場大火脫吞噬了大象金寶。最後，它的灰燼被收藏在一個花生果醬罐中。此罐現貯存於弗萊斯的體育總監辦公室，至今仍會有學生們去摸它以求好運。」以下連結可以知道更多金寶的歷史: https://www.tufts.edu/about/jumbo #AITat40 #EducationMonth

School mascot: Jumbo the elephant

The famous U.S. figure skater Michelle Kwan attended Tufts Fletcher School! More curious is the story of the school mascot. Jumbo, the school mascot, dates back to 1885. Circus showman P.T. Barnum (who was depicted in the film The Greatest Showman) was an early trustee of Tufts and he donated the stuffed hide of Jumbo to the university. A fire at Barnum Hall in 1975 consumed Jumbo, but his ashes were recovered in a peanut butter jar that has remained in the Tufts athletics director’s office where students continue to rub it for good luck.
