Eric's English Lounge 到底在做什麼啊？是補習班嗎？
Recently, I have gotten quite a few emails asking if I do private tutoring. Some have asked if I have a bushiban or run the page with a team. While our readers know we publish English learning posts, what exactly is it that we do?
最近，我收到一些信件，詢問我是否有提供私人家教，也有人問我是否為補教業者或有一個團隊在經營這個頁面。我們的讀者都知道，我們在粉專上發布英語學習的貼文，但我們究竟是做什麼的？

To be completely honest, I am not sure if there is a category suitable for our page. My current positions are a doctoral student and an educational consultant for e-learning companies and policy makers. In addition to hosting my classes, I use the page mainly to provide free resource and perform charitable activities.
坦白說，我不確定是否有相關的類別適合我們的粉絲專頁。目前我是一位博士生，也是網路公司的教育顧問。除了我開設的課程之外，我主要透過本專頁來提供免費的英語學習資源，並執行慈善計畫。

I started the page in 2012 as a lecturer and the general manager of an overseas study company, and the aim was to share learning materials with my students. I would occasionally compile information online, edit them, and publish them for free. I started investing more time around 2014 and 2015, and we had about 20K fans at this point. I did not commercialize the page, so people did not know what I was doing (they literally wrote and asked me). I left my position as the general manager, and I was unsure of my next move.
起初，我以海外留學公司總經理兼講師的身份，於２０１２年設立了這個粉專，以便與學生們分享資訊。我偶爾會整理網路上的資訊並加以編輯，免費與大家分享。在２０１４年與２０１５年期間，我開始投入更多時間，當時我們約有２萬名粉絲。我並沒有將粉專商業化，所以很多人確實不清楚我在做什麼。之後，我辭去了海外留學公司的所有職務，但不確定自己的下一步是什麼。

I did not want to open a test prep center like many suggested. I did not want to sacrifice my ideals to meet business goals, and I felt I could do more to make use of my experience and strengths as a curriculum writer and teacher. I started consulting educational organizations and worked on my own online classes. It was a difficult path because there was simply very little demand for “educational consultants” in Taiwan. I had to carve my own path, and worked with numerous organizations such as ETS-Taiwan and the British Council to do so. Meanwhile, I kept writing and compiling information on our page, and it became arguably one of the largest databanks of free bilingual learning resources in Taiwan.
我知道自己並不想如許多人建議那樣，開設一間補習班。我不想犧牲自己的理想來實現商業目標，而我也覺得可以發揮身為課程編寫者及老師的經驗與力量，做更多的事。因此，我開始為教育機構提供諮詢，並開設自己的線上課程。這是一條艱難的路，因為臺灣對「教育顧問」的需求非常少。我必須開闢自己的道路，並與許多機構合作，像是「ＥＴＳ－臺灣」以及「英國文化協會」。同時，我持續在粉專上撰寫與整理資訊，而這似乎也讓粉專成為臺灣最大的免費雙語學習資料庫之一。

I felt that students need to be aware of current events and think critically rather than focusing only on basic linguistic features. While vocabulary and grammar are undoubtedly important to second language learners, there are already ample resources in these domains. Given my interest in international news and years of experience living and working in both Taiwan and the US, I aim to offer language learners a unique perspective in learning. My posts began to cover the news, social issues, and educational editorials. We reached about 30K subscribers around 2018 with this approach.

Early 2020, we broke 50K fans on FB, and I knew it was time for me to post more regularly. I added two people to my team of one, and we started regularly posting bilingual news, education editorials, posts on empathy, and of course, free English learning resources. We also have periodic giveaways of books and educational materials. Our subscribers now include students, parents, and teachers primarily from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the US.

Some have advised me to just completely turn the page into a business since we have significant following. However, I have held back from doing so because I view myself more as a teacher and not a business owner or a social media influencer. It is not all about traffic flow and commercialization. In fact, I place many restrictions on commercial cooperation, turning down opportunities to advertise and work with many large language edu companies.

I come from a low-income, divorced family, and I started working when I was in junior high. I became independent when I turned 18, and took numerous jobs just to make ends meet. 如何在一年內學好英文-文法篇
台灣人學英文一直有一個很要不得的錯誤觀念，那就是以為只要把單字和文法學好，
那他的英文就一定棒。這真的是舊有教育制度的荼毒。記憶單字的有效方法已經在
之前的文章裡如何在一年內學好英文-閱讀篇(如何背單字)分享過了。這篇文章主
要就是分享文法的有效學習方式。英文文法說穿了，就是五大句型，然後結合時態和
完成被動語態。若這幾個都搞懂了，英文文法就幾乎都沒問題了。
什麼是五大句型?
1. 主詞 + 動詞
S. V.
2. 主詞 + 動詞 + 受詞
S. V. O.
3. 主詞 + 動詞 + 補語
S. V. C.
4. 主詞 + 動詞 + 受詞 + 受詞
S. V. O O2
5. 主詞 + 動詞 + 受詞 + 補語
S. V. O. C.
S. = Subject
V. = Verb
O. = Object
C. = Complement
1. 主詞 + 動詞
S. V.
He comes.他來了
He wins.他贏了
The dog barks.狗在叫
2. 主詞 + 動詞 + 受詞
S. V O.
He comes to the class. 他來上課
He wins the game.他贏得比賽
The dog barks at her.狗對她叫
3. 主詞 + 動詞 + 補語
S. V. C.
She is a teacher. 她是老師
It is beautiful. 它很漂亮
He is strong.他很強壯
這幾句話的主詞都沒有問題，很明確，但是動詞呢？這三句話有動作嗎？沒有。
這三句話的「a teacher」、「beautiful」和「strong」都只是在描述主詞，
這些描述可以包含職業、身分、特徵、個性…等，用意在於「補充說明」主詞 的狀況
以及句子的完整意思，因此我們叫它「補語」。
4. 主詞 + 動詞 + 受詞 + 受詞
S. V. O1 O2
I give him a car.我給他一台車
He buys me a house.他買一間房給我
They pass him a paper.他們傳給他一張紙
這一類型簡單說來就是多一個受詞，其實也算是SVO的句型。如果只有I give him句子就不會完整。He buys me和They pass him也不算完整的句子。所以後面才會多一個受詞。
5. 主詞 + 動詞 + 受詞 + 補語
S. V. O. C.
He makes me happy. 他讓我快樂
He paints the house green.他把房子漆成綠色
第五種句型的補語，其實就是為了「補充說明」受詞的狀況，就這麼簡單！
因為它是補充受詞的狀況，所以我們可以叫它「受詞補語」。
其實說穿了，都只是SVO的句型。所以英文到最後都幾乎是SVO的放大和縮小而已。
我看過了很多本的文法書，國內國外的都有看過很多，看完的結論就是，
文法90%以上是固定不變的規則，但仍然有那5~10%是有爭議性的。
文法只是英文句型的組成規則，他有一定的規則存在，但是有小部分的文法，
是會隨著每個文法書作者的觀點不同而有所不同，還是會有很多小例外。而大部分
國際性的英文考試(如多益TOEIC)，是不太喜歡考那5~10%的例外。而台灣的
本土性英文考試，則喜歡考那些5~10%的例外。對於這種情況，我只能說無言，
搞不懂他們為什麼要這麼做，為什麼不只考那90%的通則，而要台灣人去記
那些5~10%的例外?台灣的文法書和國外的文法書還有一個很大的不同。
台灣的文法書很多寫得很複雜，一堆中文敘述，看都看不懂在寫什麼?
我曾經看過好幾個台灣作者寫的文法書，明明我知道那則文法，我也可以很簡單的解釋
給別人聽，讓別人看得懂。但是那位台灣作者寫的中文解釋，我竟然看不懂在寫什麼?
相反的，國際上有名地文法權威寫的文法工具書，則很多都淺顯易懂。
不會太多的文字敘述，幾乎都用例子來解說，讓人一目了然。
我最常推薦給學生的文法書籍就是Basic Grammar in Use，作者Raymond Murphy。

以前只有英文版，目前台灣有中文版，但是通常好像只有在誠品才會有賣。
劍橋活用英語文法: 初級+中級 (2冊合售)
Basic Grammar in Use/ Grammar in Use Intermediate。
這本文法書是我看過寫得最淺顯易懂的，同時有一個很有趣的現象。
我的朋友們不管到哪裡留學，美國、加拿大、澳洲或英國，不論你是要念高中、大學
和研究所，幾乎所有的語言學校機構都會要求他們去買這本書來自我學習。
你相信嗎?在國外，大部分的文法都是自修而來，老師當然會講解，
但大多數都是自修的。為什麼呢?因為這本書編的太好了，他簡單來說就是每單元兩頁，
左頁為用法解說，右頁為練習題。先在左邊看文法，然後右邊練習，你右邊的題目，
答案應該都在左手邊能找的到。
你可以看到有很多的圖示，大部份都用例句來解說，不會在給你一長串的中文解釋，
看得頭昏。請記住一定要買有附解答的版本，不然你寫了半天也不知道是對是錯。
按照這本書的進度，一天1~3個單元，很快整本書就做完了，中間若是自己看了解答和左邊
解說都還看不懂的，就可以拿去問人。說真的，紅色的基礎做完，對一般人已經很夠用了，
若兩本都做完，幾乎去考試都是綽綽有餘。研究文法最重要的就是一本重頭到尾要讀完，
千萬不要看沒幾頁就丟在旁邊，然後他就掛在書架上一直擺灰塵。
你若是已經有買了文法書，就不要再買了(除非你的是台灣作者編的)，
先乖乖的一本看到完畢再說吧。
