English Learning Ecosystem Update
As I began exploring Instagram, I struggled to find a way to deliver useful academic content. Instagram posts typically focus on images, short clips, and concise text, which are attention grabbing but not always entirely conducive to language learning. I looked over the posts of established Instagram English learning accounts, and experimented with vocabulary posts and even news posts for a couple of weeks. Not wanting to post just images, I thought about creating something new even with the rigid format of the platform.
當我開始研究怎麼用IG,我想盡了各種辦法,希望能提供大家一些實用的學術內容。 IG 的特色著重在圖片、短片以及簡潔的文字,這樣的方式雖然很容易引人注目,卻不全然有助於語言學習。我瀏覽了 IG 上英文教學網紅的貼文,並在這幾週嘗試發了一些學術單字與新聞相關的文章。我並不想只是發一些圖片,而思考著要如何在既有框架下創作一些新的東西。

A tenet of using tech in education is to engage students with what they are familiar with, not give them an entirely new platform that is difficult to use. So, how could I create a new series of Instagram posts that is both educational and unique? I thought about my goal to disseminate academic English resources, and how I could leverage my experience as a curriculum writer and voice recording artist for public school textbooks.

So far, this is what I have at the moment. I will post Word of the Day (每日一詞), high frequency vocabulary words that you see in academic texts and sometimes on the news. These Tier 2 academic vocabulary words are not exclusive to a single domain and complement the theme-based approach I’ve taken with my mind-mapping vocabulary class. You can find other vocabulary learning methods here.

To help students use more precise and common academic phrases, I then added Academic Phrases (每日一句), set phrases that appear in both academic speech and writing. These phrases have varying functions from introducing a topic to comparing and contrasting ideas. There is a difference between speech and writing, so I picked words that could be used for both. If one is used only in a specific context, I will make note of it in the video recording. This series of posts will help students with language output, and can be found under the following hashtag 學術英語片語.

Last, I will follow up with an abridged version of breaking news (時事英文) with high frequency collocations and audio recordings. This will provide students with the input of not only individual words, but how to use them in output (speech and writing) with context. While all these news posts might seem independent at first, I will eventually link and organize them by theme when there are enough posts. Along with my news class, these extra posts will help students stay aware of current events, acquire set phrases used in journalism, and develop critical thinking. These posts can currently be found under the hashtag EEL時事英文.

[7 ways to acquire your first 1,000 users - pt.1]
Last time I wrote about a common early stage startup’s acquisition dilemma - “optimizing an acquisition channel v.s finding a new acquisition channel.” This time I'm going to dive into different ways of finding new acquisition channels.
Having one method work for your startup doesn’t mean you should disqualify the others, but it also doesn’t mean that every method will work for your startup either. It’s about testing and finding the right channel fit for your business.
Essentially every major consumer app acquired their early users using these methods, including Netflix, Instagram, Uber, Tinder, TikTok, and many more.
1. Find your users, offline
Once you identify who your target users could be, go find them in real life and get them to try your product! If they are not interested in what you have made, your product either doesn’t solve their problem or you have got the wrong target users.
To kickstart Uber’s growth in new cities, they often went to airports and downloaded the Uber app for taxi drivers and handed out coupons to riders. Tinder’s co-founder ran around college campuses handing out flyers and pitched to fraternities. Identifying your target user is important, if you know where they would conjugate, you want to be there too.
2. Find your users, online
Your target user could conjugate online too, and if they do, find them, and get them to them try your product! The same rule applies here, if the online users are not interested in what you have made, iterate on the product or the target users. Dropbox did exactly this, launching on Hacker News with only a video, even without a functional product.
You want to infiltrate your target user’s community, fit in, use their language, and even befriend them. The advantage in interacting with users online is that you have the option to remain anonymous, but the disadvantage is that gaining their trust could take a longer period of time, but this is exactly how Netflix launched their product across America, slowing turning pockets of online movie enthusiast and cinephiles into Netflix users.
3. Invite your friends to kickstart a positive network effect
To successfully launch a product through your own network you need to leverage referral programs. Products which works well with this method generates value for its users by acquiring more users, thus creating incentive for both the inviter and invitee. Reid Hoffman launched LinkedIn into his network of founders and entrepreneurs, marking the platform really attractive for job seekers, thus creating a positive network effect which attracts more employers, which then again attracts more employees.
Two takeaways that are fundamental in getting your first 1,000 users is to “do things that don’t scale” and to narrowly define your target users. By doing both, you validate your product's problem/solution fit and product/market fit.

One way is to use Bloom's taxonomy when learning something new. After you remember the information, see if you can move up the pyramid by using the key verbs listed in each step to facilitate discussion and higher-order thinking.
One does not need to carry out each of these steps in order (e.g., apply before analyze). However, learners typically need to "understand" information before they can "analyze" and "evaluate" it.
Bloom's taxonomy can be used individually or with teachers and peers. Use it when acquiring information or thinking about a complex issue.

Yes, you can! Language is a tool for us to decode text, symbols, and sounds and find meaning. It enables us to receive and give information, or in short, to communicate. Once we receive information, we can take the next step and begin thinking critically. Doing so will enhance our understanding of new information and help us to decide what action to take.

Many beginning English learners think it is impossible to think critically when learning because they only understand a few words. However, a learner can use critical thinking even when learning the most basic words!

First, teachers can use the students' first language to help them understand higher-level concepts and facilitate thinking. Second, learners can break down the complex process of critical thinking into simple steps by using Bloom's taxonomy.
首先,老師可用學生的母語,來協助他們建立層次較高的概念並促進思考。接著,老師可使用布魯姆的分類法來拆解批判性思考的複雜過程。

如你所見,每當你接收任何資訊,甚至是基礎語言學習,都可以鍛鍊批判性思考。
