1. Out of every 10 people, how many Americans celebrate Christmas?
Answer: Nine in 10 Americans celebrate Christmas, according to a 2017 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, and around 55% consider it a religious holiday, while 33% think of it as more of a cultural celebration.

2. Has Christmas ever been illegal to celebrate?
Yes. The Massachusetts-Bay Colony ordinance of 1659 made Christmas illegal to celebrate in that specific colony. The law was repealed in 1681. Christmas didn’t become a state holiday in Massachusetts until 1856, though.

3. How did red and green become Christmas colors?
We mostly have holly and Coca-Cola to thank for the rise of red and green as Christmas colors. Holly, obviously, has bright red berries and dark green leaves. It was used long ago by the ancient Celts for winter solstice celebrations as a symbol of protection and good luck. Coca-Cola’s role in making the colors a widespread combo for the holiday began in 1931 with ads featuring Santa Claus in a red and white suit surrounded by a green background and accents.

4. True or false: "Jingle Bells" was written to be a Christmas song.

5. How many Americans use artificial Christmas trees?

Answer: The tradition came about thanks to a legend that states the generous Turkish bishop St. Nicholas helped a set of three poor sisters avoid a life of indentured servitude by paying for their dowries. For three nights, the bishop threw gold down their chimney, which landed in their stockings hung by their fireplace to dry. Now we carry on the tradition by hanging stockings to fill with gifts and small treats.

How was it like to spend the Thanksgiving week in West Africa (Benin, Togo and Ghana)? The spirit of Thanksgiving is celebration of harvest, so what if there is no harvest to celebrate?
It was challenging to travel through these countries as a foreigner -- lack of information, gap in material life plus cultural differences. Many things were unpredictable, and I had to adjust my plan multiple times. And to be honest, yes, I did make some wrong desicions along the way. Fortunately these decisions didn't impact the itinerary too much.
The biggest lesson learned: don't try to be an ultimate budget traveler in West Africa! It's not cheap to travel there, and it's worth to pay more for better safety and more comfort. At the end of the day your life worths much more than your money.
Right now, as I'm ready to board the flight leaving Africa, I think this is a perfect timing for Thanksgiving. So this is the thanks I'd like to say:
"Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come:
'tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home."
(John Newton, Amazing Grace, stanza 3)

I’ve lived in Hong Kong for just over seven years but grew up outside of Toronto. My family live back in Canada and I’m grateful I can visit home for a good chunk of time every year. But that doesn’t make living on the other side of the world any easier.
.
Of course moving abroad was my decision and I’ve absolutely loved every moment of it. I’ve grown so much, have had the most incredible experiences and opportunities, and am truly happy with the person I’ve become.
.
Despite all these positives of calling Hong Kong home, it never gets easier to miss important moments back in Canada with my family. It’s hard facing the reality that I don’t know when I’ll be able to celebrate Christmas, thanksgiving, birthdays, and other occasions with them again. And it’s absolutely terrifying to think of something happening to them while I’m over here.
.
If you’ve moved abroad, what’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced/are facing and how are you dealing with it?
.
(Sorry for the slightly emotional post - just missing the comforts of home and unconditional love of family right now!)

Q: How much extra waste is created during the winter holiday season? A: Americans throw away 25% more trash during the Thanksgiving to New Year's holiday period than any other time of year. The extra waste amounts to 25 million tons of garbage, or about 1 million extra tons per week!
Hopefully this year and for the upcoming years we can help more on recycling and environmental ways to celebrate holidays, focusing more on the atmosphere with family and friends.

In Japan, we have Labor Thanksgiving Day (勤労感謝の日) on November 23rd. It is different from the American Thanksgiving in the way we just celebrate our hard work and thank to workers. We usually just take a day off on this national holiday if we can, but like New Year's holidays, most people work on this day these days 😅
Do you have Thanksgiving day in your country? Do you work on Thanksgiving?
