I did not expect this thing to go viral (no pun intended) but I looked through some of the shares and their comments. Many were just as pleasantly surprised as I was and supportive of the need for universal healthcare. Some were skeptical about the price, one person thought this was in Thailand, a few made excuses to bash Taiwan’s health system despite them knowing nothing about it. So I thought I would clarify a few things:
1: Yes, Taiwan has a noticeably cheaper cost of living than the US, healthcare included. However, Taiwan isn’t /that/ cheap. There are places in Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe that are significantly cheaper than Taiwan.
2: Taiwan is not a poor country by any measure. It’s GDP per capita is higher than Denmark, Austria and Canada.
3: Yes, doctors make less here, but it’s still considered a respected middle class profession. And there seems to be no shortage of them.
4: Some people argued that exchange rates mean US$80 is a fortune for a Taiwanese person. No, you just have a poor understanding of numismatics. The exchange rate has nothing to do with the overall cost. Just because $1 Taiwan dollar is US 3¢ doesn’t mean I can live large here. $50 Taiwan dollars won’t even buy you a Big Mac.
5: Yes, taxes pay for the healthcare here. No, they are not high. Try for yourself: The formula for the NHI monthly premium contribution for a single employed adult is:
[your monthly income] x 0.0469 (4.69%) x 0.3 (30%) = Your monthly out-of-pocket healthcare premium
6: It’s not perfect. Not everything is 100% covered. I had a good experience, but Im sure many people have had [non-financial] medical horror stories here.
7: This system exists because the Taiwanese government believes that healthcare is a right for all of its citizens, rather than a privilege for those who can afford it. Those aren’t my words, thats what the Ministry of Health said in its English language brochure. Every Taiwanese citizen and foreign permanent resident is entitled to, and required to enroll in the National Health Insurance Program (NHI). Everyone is covered, regardless of employment status, no one is uninsured, no one ever goes bankrupt due to medical bills.
I have yet to meet a Taiwanese person who wasn’t satisfied with, or even outright proud of their healthcare system. My expat friends praise it, even those from countries with universal healthcare systems of their own.
Taiwan is less wealthy than the US, yet it spends less and gets more out of its healthcare system. We see the same story repeat itself in every other developed nation. This debate is all so tiresome, because there is no debate. Universal healthcare works, it can be done here, it can be done in any country with sufficient resources. All we need is political will and an implementation plan. Pardon my French but, America, get your head out of your ass, and stop making excuses.

latin words in english 在 Lee Hsien Loong Facebook 的精選貼文
I came across this interesting piece about how the Chinese language is changing in China. People are using English words in spoken and written Chinese directly, without translating them into Chinese equivalents, or even transliterating them into similar sounding Chinese characters. It is easier to say GDP than 国内生产总值, and Wifi is Wifi.
This is causing controversy in China. Some think it is the practical thing to do – everybody knows what Wifi is, so why invent some unfamiliar Chinese term for the same thing? But others feel that the pure Chinese language is being polluted with foreign words. After all, some translations have been successful – Coca Cola 可口可乐 has a very appropriate meaning, and translating email into 电邮 is neat and succinct.
The same thing is happening to other languages too. If you listen to Malay spoken in Malaysia, or Tamil in India, you will often hear English words mixed in.
The reality is that a language is a live, changing thing. It constantly absorbs words, concepts and usages from foreign languages, so long as people are using it in their daily lives. Otherwise it becomes a dead language, studied by scholars but not spoken by ordinary people anymore, like Latin or Sanskrit.
We pay a lot of attention to languages in Singapore. We are doing our utmost to keep our mother tongues alive. These are live languages to be used, so we should accept that they will evolve and change over time. We need to speak and write them correctly, but also colloquially. Then we will really be cool, or as we say in Mandarin, 酷! :)

http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/…/heavy-backpacks-can-trigge…/
http://usgovinfo.about.com/…/consumerawa…/a/backpacktips.htm
LOL! Didn't realize when I posted the picture this morning it would be the topic of such a passionate debate. Just wanted to capture the moment of Ryder going off to 2nd Grade. The comments became a debate about who should carry the backpack and the language of my posts. That's why we love this FB page cuz our fans are so passionate about everything. Here's our two cents.
1. When I post, I always make it bilingual and I remind Jackie the same. I can type 60 words/min in English and my Chinese comes in at a snail's pace of 6 words/min. Serious! It's taken me like an hour to write the above in Chinese. Anyway, we think it's important to write in both languages because a bulk of our fans are from Taiwan but there are thousands that live abroad. Anyway, when I posted this morning“開學了”, I really thought the three words were in Chinese. As of tonight, I still to. Contrary to a couple of people who may read it as Latin. haha! JK.
2. Now the serious part. Jackie and I actually discussed this whole backpack thing many times and there have been numerous news reports about it cuz it's back to school season. Basically it says, children's backpacks are getting heavier and long term abuse can lead to back pain and other problems. A child should carry, at most, 15% of his body weight. Well, Ryder weighs 22kg and his bag his 4.5kg and on most days it is over 5kg which is 20-25% of his weight. That's like me carrying Ryder to school everyday on my back which would be crazy.
http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/…/heavy-backpacks-can-trigge…/
So if you want your child to carry his/her backpack, then be my guest. Everyone is free to make their own decisions. You just gotta live with them. Ryder will definitely carry his own bag when he gets a little bigger and stronger. But for now, mommy will carry it and daddy will just walk behind taking pictures. haha! Plus Makayla, I'm sure, will just find a boy to carry her bag!!!!
Good luck, and we really thank everyone for the support.
