What BBoys/BGirls don't know is that when you dance, everything you do at that moment in time on the dance floor is copyrighted on the spot based on rights that you have protected by laws, and you are the sole owner of this copyright artwork. Your images, name, movements etc are considered intellectual property that you - the artist, own yourself. BBoys/BGirls can always negotiate terms for others to use your intellectual property. It's a fees that can be paid to you for branding and other marketing purposes by any organizations ON TOP of other fees like judging fees, workshop fees etc. Usually the artist grants a non-exclusive license for others to use their intellectual property.
However, everything that is negotiable don't have to be in dollar value, but rather something of INTANGIBLE VALUE for both parties. The artists can always negotiate terms where organizations don't have to pay a fee for non-exclusive rights, in exchange, organizations can work with the artist to promote the artist and his/her work (clips of the artist to artist's products like shirts books etc) on their platform heavily 4x per day for 2-3 weeks straight etc (just an example). Basically both are adding value to each others brand equity. The artist and his/her work is getting value by being pushed heavily from the organization's platform, and the organization's platform is getting great branding value from a top notch world class artist being part of their platform.
If everyone is talking about advancing the art form to a PROFESSIONAL level, then the artist themselves must know their rights, and get on that business minded. BBoys/BGirls need to get back to being artists, and not just being amateur competitors:
- Add value to your brand (i.e being a MASTER at your craft, create visuals, create your own products that defines you etc)
- Know about marketing
- Know about supply and demand
- Know about business etiquette (i.e. be professional when you are hired to do a job)
- Build up your supporters
- Know your rights as artists (get a manager or attorney if possible)
- Always have contracts ready AND read over contracts (attorney or manager to assist)
- Be ready to negotiate fairly
- Support others
Not too many dialogue about BBoys/BGirls artists development out there. Just want to put it out there for those who place value in their work, and are passionate about their artistry. Why I wrote this? I'm just very passionate in helping others to see the VALUE of their GREATNESS. Plain and simple. #KNowYourWorth
