【Taiwan is a democracy. 這句話怎麼翻呢?】
今天某藝人的發言,寫著 "Taiwan is a democracy. You can sing whatever the....." 意外地讓我發現了Google 的政治立場 😛。
Taiwan is a democracy. 其實有不只一種翻法,但 Google Translate 翻成了「台灣是個民主國家」。☺️
democracy 是個可數、也不可數的字。文法裡叫做 variable noun。
不可數時當作「民主制度」或是「民主」這個抽象概念,當作可數時可以當作相對具象的「民主政體」、或是「民主國家」,而演算法選了後者。
我在美國史丹佛大學 (Stanford Univ) 出版的文章當中,找到了這段文字給大家當延伸學習的參考。
Taiwan has undergone a peaceful transition to “democracy” over a period of more than a decade. Today, Taiwan is one of the freest and most vibrant “democracies” in Asia. Nevertheless, Taiwan's “democracy” still faces steep internal and external challenges. Some of these are common to many emerging and established “democracies” in Asia and beyond, including widespread popular dissatisfaction with elected leaders and the corruption of public officials. Others are unique to the island’s ambiguous status in international affairs and its complicated relationship with the authoritarian People’s Republic of China.
其中出現的 democracy 和 democracies, 是否正符合上面的解釋呢?

💬美國生活用語:Corn玉米🌽
1⃣corn-fed
2⃣ pee/piss in sb.’s cornflakes
3⃣ corny
4⃣ cornball
--
Corn is a grain with a special place in the hearts of Americans. First introduced to early settlers by the Indians, it has since become a staple of the American diet, used to make everything from popcorn and muffins to corn chips and corn syrup. Naturally, corn has become part of our language as well.
玉米在美國人心中是種特別的榖物。一開始是由印地安人介紹給最早的一批移民者,自此之後成為美國的重要主食之一,玉米可以用來作成各式各樣的食物,從爆米花、瑪芬、玉米片到玉米糖漿皆可見。理所當然地,玉米也成為英語語言的一部分。
Driving though the Midwest, you’ll pass by endless fields of corn, which is eaten by animals and people alike. The adjective1⃣ “corn-fed” is used to describe animals fed or fattened with corn, i.e. “corn-fed hogs.” What about people? If you call someone corn-fed, it means they look plump, well-fed and robust. Ex: Several corn-fed Midwesterners tried out for the football team. When describing people and places, corn-fed can also mean unsophisticated and provincial. Ex: Karen grew up in a small, corn-fed Kansas town.
只要開車經過美國中西部,你一定會路過一望無際的玉米田,這是種植給動物與人類吃的。形容詞corn-fed就是用來形容以玉米餵食或增肥的動物,如corn-fed hogs(玉米豬)。那人呢?如果你說某人是corn-fed,其實是說這人看起來豐潤、吃得很好、容光煥發,如:Several corn-fed Midwesterners tried out for the football team.(好幾位厚實健壯的中西部人前來參加美式足球隊選拔。)corn-fed如果用來敘述人或地方,也可以指「未經世事、天真的」以及「守舊狹隘的」,如:Karen grew up in a small, corn-fed Kansas town.(凱倫在堪薩斯州的一個守舊的小村落長大。)
Cornflakes are a popular American breakfast, and if someone peed in them, you’d be pretty mad, right? 2⃣That’s exactly what “pee/piss in sb.’s cornflakes means. Ex: Gee, I wonder who peed in the manager’s cornflakes today.
玉米片是非常受歡迎的美國式早餐,如果有人在上面撒尿,你一定會抓狂吧!這就是pee/piss in sb.’s cornflakes的意思。如:Gee, I wonder who peed in the manager’s cornflakes today.(老天,不知道今天是誰惹毛了經理。)
Since corn is such a simple and common type of food, can you guess what the 3⃣ adjective “corny” means? If a joke, story or song is corny, it’s silly, trite or overly sentimental. Ex: Dad always tells such corny jokes. 4⃣ The adjective “cornball” has the same meaning. Ex: Martin has such a cornball sense of humor. And it can also be a noun. Ex: Martin is such a cornball.
既然玉米是如此簡單又常見的食物,你可以猜猜看 corny 是什麼意思呢?如果有個笑話或故事是 corny 的,就是在說它們是「愚蠢、老套且濫情的」,如:Dad always tells such corny jokes.(老爸老是喜歡講這種老掉牙的笑話。)cornball 當形容詞也有一樣的意思,如:Martin has such a cornball sense of humor.(馬丁的幽默感實在有夠老掉牙。)也可以直接當名詞使用,如:Martin is such a cornball.(馬丁真是個愛講冷笑話的人。)

FAQ from my last insta story about transferring notes to another notebook 💕🇰🇷
📚
1. Why do you transfer notes?
I am rewriting difficult example sentences from my vocabulary book into my main study notebook. These are only words that I keep forgetting even after studying them on Quizlet or reviewing my vocab notebook. I remember example sentences better than single words, so this helps for me. I just want one page of all my difficult words. I don't do this for all my languages - just now for my exam prep.
💚
2. What's the green highlight for?
I use a green highlight to underline the vocabulary word with a key phrase. It helps me remember a noun if I see it with a verb, or I remember an adjective better if it's written with the noun it describes, for example.
✍️
3. What pen do you use?
For smaller writing I use a thinner pen. The blue ink is the Pilot Juice Up 0.4 pen. I also use 0.35 MUJI pens in black for most of my writing.
📑
4. What notebook do you use? For my vocabulary notebook I use a small squared notebook. I don't think this one is even a popular brand and I bought it ages ago. For the bigger lined notebook, I love Campus Kokyuo notebooks from Japan (you can get them at Daiso, Tokyu Hands, pretty much anywhere!). Read more about my TOPIK vocab study method on my website at www.lindiebotes.com/blog. I also have language resources for tons of languages there!

Pulled chai made by a tea seller, or "chai wallah". Here's how masala chai is made at the famous Krishna's Tea Stall. Ingredients include black tea, fresh whole milk, water, black peppercorns, sugar, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. Unlike many milky teas, which are brewed in water with milk later added, traditional masala chai is often brewed directly in the milk.
Masala chai (Hindi: मसाला चाय, literally "mixed-spice tea"; Urdu: مصالحہ چائے) is a flavoured tea beverage made by brewing black tea with a mixture of aromatic Indian spices and herbs. Originating in India, the beverage has gained worldwide popularity, becoming a feature in many coffee and tea houses. Although traditionally prepared by a decoction of green cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, ground cloves, ground ginger, and black peppercorn together with black tea leaves, retail versions include tea bags for infusion, instant powdered mixtures, and concentrates. The noun "chai" alone refers to the beverage tea; in some places, chai is an acceptable equivalent for masala chai.
In many Eurasian languages, chai or cha is the word for tea. This comes from the Persian چای chay, which originated from the Chinese word for tea 茶 chá. (The English word tea, on the other hand, comes from the Teochew dialect of Chinese teeh.) In English, this spiced tea is commonly referred to as masala chai or simply chai, even though the term refers to tea in general in the origin language. Numerous United States coffee houses use the term chai latte or the redundant term chai tea latte for their version to indicate that the steamed milk, much like a regular cafè latte, is mixed with a spiced tea concentrate instead of espresso. By 1994 the term had gained currency on the U.S. coffeehouse scene.
Masala tea is a very popular beverage in South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka). People start their day by consuming a cup of tea. This first cup of tea is fondly called 'bed tea'. Throughout the day people consume many cups of tea. Every street corner in places of business has a 'Chai Walla', a tea maker who brings hot tea to people's places of business whether they are retail businesses or commercial. Tea is a part of life and is offered to all guest at home and also to many customers visiting retail stores.

Fun Fact, the word "Momiji" (紅葉) is a noun that refers to maple leaves, and the word "Koyo" (紅葉) means "the changing colour of the leaves", but they are the exact same kanji compound.
I'm sure you've heard of "Hanami", Japan's popular cherry blossom viewing event in the Spring, but in the Fall, when the leaves start to change colour, the Japanese like to celebrate that as well. Koyo, celebrations start in November, and spread all across Japan as the temperatures drop and the seasons start to change.
In this video, Tatsu and I explore two popular Koyo sites in Saga Prefecture-- Kunen-an, (九年庵) and Daikouzenji (大興善寺) Temple.
PS, Sorry I'm not really in this video. I wanted to show you all this stuff, but I didn't really feel like "vlogging" that day.
