Sir David Tang is the most respectable HKer that I know. Was a bit disappointed to realise this book is really a collection of his replies to questions in his FT column, but the content is superb. Thank you @henryshek
Some top advice from the book:
Worrying about outfit - dont if u r not famous. Nobody will care.
Whenever in doubt about dress code, wear a tailored Mao jacket
Suits should be worn and old but well-pressed
Brown shoes are frowned upon
Pretend to be the assistant of a celebrity when u book a sought-after restaurant
The whole point of any holiday or leisurely gathering is to laugh
Whenever sth becomes indspensable in life, it is time to try to go without it
Screw dinner parties. Lunch is fine tho
Dinner conversations should always include history, politics and culture. Never gossip
Always invite guests u think will NOT get on, so that one can hear the different sides of their stories
Anecdotes are better than jokes
Dont be middle class by being antsy about placement at dinner
Use things as if they are cheap - the things should suit us, rather than us having to suit them
Be a teetotaller
Start eating once u have been served food. No need to wait for the others
No need to stress on dress code - ppl are bound to break them, spoiling the whole visual effect
When u leave a party, no need to say bye
Use common sense for etiquette, no need to stick to so-called convention
If frds u know are often late for appointments, be later than them still. And don't apologise
The best rooms are replete with paintings and books, with content to fill a universe of memories and dreams
The best exercises are done outdoors, the whole point being to clear one's mind by allowing time to think without distractions
Blotches on tablecloths and carpets are marks of stylish nonchalance and confidence
Dont ask guests to take off their shoes for the carpet or the floor at home - naff
Unmatching jacket and trousers shows sophistication, subtlety and modesty
Stop dispensing name cards - infra dig. Make yourself interesting enough for that person to take an interest in u instead
Stop asking ppl what they have been up to
