Sharing my recipe on IGTV since most of you haven’t seen the full YouTube video & it’s important for me to keep spreading the food I grew up on!
The irony is that while editing this, I was reckoning with the fact that I’m generally not considered “Filipino” by those in the Philippines even though I’m so proud of my heritage 😕
I was just called an entitled “pseudo-Filipino” in the comments of the last post by @barkadadc, a white-owned wine bar that got backlash for naming itself Barkada, a meaningful Tagalog word for deep friendship. They were serving wine & charcuterie instead of any Filipino items with no intention of promoting Filipino culture beyond their name. In their words to @eater_dc, they “didn’t want to call it posse or homies or clique” so they went with Barkada because “it helped that bar is in the word” 🤨
Countless Filipino-Americans (Fil-Ams) pressured them to agree to change their name (though that name change has yet to happen 🧐). I personally saw it as stealing a great name from a potential business that would actually promote Filipino culture, like @barkadahollywood has done in LA. But Filipinos largely condoned keeping the name, calling Fil-Ams overly sensitive and touting that they’re “proud” to see non-Filipinos “spreading our culture” even though this business was NOT actually doing so with their $17 glasses of Spanish wine and cheese plates. They were appropriating, not appreciating.
I got into debates (and welcome more below) because I couldn’t understand why Filipinos were so adamantly defending white men appropriating our language when they could instead support the name change, which would open the door for a Barkada DC that HONORS our culture. So consider this a call to my fellow Fil-Ams in the DC area to capitalize on this media hype and open the Barkada DC the community deserves 🙏🏽
Filipino food is not that widespread. We still have a chance to open authentic places to educate people before our cuisine gets bastardized the way others have. I know I’m going to keep doing my part to share the food I grew up on, and I hope you all try out a recipe yourself to learn to love it too ❤️

"Things happen around me everyday, we can't stand aside anymore"
Taiwan is an island country, we seldom pay attention or know what's going on in other countries. We think it's too far from us and we have our own business to mind.
The following is what happened to me when I was waiting for my tram. Ppl sat on left-hand side speak English, and ppl sat on right-hand side speak Spanish or Portuguese. When we got on the tram, we encountered a group of black ppl. Fabian and I thought: were we in Germany or somewhere else?
I aware that we are living in an international and globalized era, we should start to care about the world. Especially like Europe, ppl can go to other countries within one day. Even if we live in an island, we need to connect to the world. I believe there are many ppl aspiring to work or travel in foreign countries, but if you don't even know the culture or things the country you are going to, you will definitely have a cultural shock and frustration after your arrival. Because things you encounter, see and experience are all different from what you thought in Taiwan.
Take myself for example, I always thought Paris is very beautiful and romantic. However, when I arrived, I saw dirty streets and metros, stinks everywhere, and I was afraid of pick-pockets. Currently Paris had several attacks so it becomes a unsafe or unstable city. Ppl even discuss about the freedom of speech and the extremes of a religion. I used to work with colleagues from different nations, if I didn't know their cultures or countries a little bit, I might offend them.
We must be open-minded and try to connect ourselves with the world. If we can understand one's culture and country more, when you are in that country, you can find a balance between you and the country. This way you might find your true self or understand yourself more. Let's try to be part of the world :D

5 FAMOUS WESTERN CELEBRITIES WHO CAN ACTUALLY SPEAK CHINESE
Not so impressive if we made a video on '5 Chinese Celebrities Who Can Speak English', but thanks to the double standards in our world, Western celebrities who speak Chinese are way more interesting to talk about!
But to be fair, they are rare and few between. It's just not common. However, I've found 5 celebrities who have this language ability.
1. John Cena
- Legendary WWE wrestler who has recently transitioned into hilarious movie roles
- Even if you don't know wrestling, you may have seen his John Cena meme.
- Spoke Chinese in Trainwreck (2015) and some WWE promos
- Gave a 2 minute speech in Chinese to promote WWE's new deal with Chinese PPTV network, shocking everyone.
2. Mira Sorvino
- American actress who won academy award & golden globe for best supporting actress.
- Starred in some AMWF lead movies such as The Replacement Killers with Chow Yun Fat.
- Majored in East Asian Studies at Harvard University
- Did an exchange in Beijing, China where she got fluent.
3. Kevin Rudd
- Not Paul Rudd....
- Former Prime Minister of Australia, twice
- The most fluent in Mandarin Chinese on our list.
INTERMISSION
- Conan O'Brien & Hugh Jackman sing a song in Chinese!
4. Vanessa Branch
- Blonde British actress
- Spoke Chinese in Entourage & Suburban Girl
- Also been in Pirates of the Caribbean
- Majored in Chinese
- Perhaps surprising because of her stereotypical blonde appearance?
5. Mark Zuckerberg
- Co-founder of Facebook
- 6th richest man in the world
- Has a Chinese wife so it actually makes sense he speaks Chinese
- Surprised everyone at a Q&A in a Chinese university where he spoke Mandarin for an hour.
