When I'm not shooting for weddings and engagements, you'll often find me working on creative editorials! I find it truly rewarding to put more meaning into my work, and to put an idea originally at the back of my head into reality.
I can't stress enough how important it is to keep my passion and my 🔥 going. To have the privilege of directing a shoot from start to finish, from deciding on the mood board, wardrobe, hair and makeup, to choosing locations, posing, photographing, culling and editing, these are what spark joy for me. Work will always be busy but I find it so important to keep my side projects going. That's how I bring a fresh perspective to my work. And I hope I can inspire couples to express what they deeply resonate with, know that the finer details are worth putting time into, and to understand that anything they envision/imagine for their own shoot is possible!
This shoot is part of an ongoing multi-year series I'm directing. It celebrates Chinese traditions with a modern twist. Having started photographing weddings in Vancouver at the beginning of my career, I realised how important it is to the couple’s family that they still incorporate tea ceremony in weddings to honour their family. I personally love this meaningful tradition, and can honestly imagine couple’s family would really appreciate the extra effort put into designing a beautiful tea ceremony. From choosing an embroidered “cheongsam” (such as this one by @cinobicinobi ) to finding a fitting location, there’re so much couples can do to bring surprise and awe to their family!

Here is my English cover of "Yume Tourou," the last song in my "Your Name" series! Thanks so much to everyone that has watched my videos, subscribed, given thumbs up, and shared! I'm so glad that you all like what I'm doing, and I hope you'll continue to check out my future videos :)
*Meaning of the song's title:
Yume = "dream"
Tourou = "lantern"
There is a tradition called "tourou nagashi" where a paper lantern is set afloat during the last day of the O-bon festival. The lantern lights the way for the souls of the departed to cross back into the afterlife after they visit at O-bon (hopefully I'm correct in the details). So I think this title is meant to give the image of a lantern lighting the way into or out of a dream. I think this song really only makes sense in the context of the movie :)

Ah, if only our voices that speak in the night
Instead of fading into the edges of light at far ends of Earth
Could find their way through all of space, all of time
Oh, and if they could, what would we say?
What will the words be that we first exchange?
Let’s make a promise, one that will never fade
On my count of three, say it with me, yeah
Ah, I’m told that some part of every wish will be heard
But lately I lost sight of the truth in those words
I can’t even remember when I gave up believing
What could have been the reasoning?
Ah, you told me in the very moment that the rain subsides
And everywhere a rainbow is born or dies
And where the end of this life lies
You always would insist there was something that begins nearby
One day we’ll go, unearth emotions we’d buried all our lives
We’ll high-five love we’ve yet to discover and give a kiss to time
The five dimensions may laugh right in my face
But I will keep on looking at you, babe
Let’s decide on a sign for when we say “nice to meet you” again
I’m on my way to you, chasing after your name
itsuka ikou zen-seimei mo mitou mikaitaku
no kanjou ni hai-tacchi shite jikan ni kisu wo
go-jigen ni karaka-warete sore demo kimi wo miru yo
mata "hajimemashite" no aizu wo kimeyou
kimi no na wo ima oi-kakeru yo

Put together an extra long video this time to show you a little bit of what Raya here in Malaysia is like. Eid celebrations all over the world vary so much, so I thought it would be fun to document Malaysian celebrations.

DAY 1:
Breakfast with some friends and family. A lot of the people we know in Kuala Lumpur are Muslim converts from all over the world (England, US, Europe) so we try to do things together just because they obviously don't have family here or any proper Malaysian traditions, so getting together after the Eid prayer has become a tradition of ours.
Everyone brings a dish and then we sit down and tuck in. This time Shelina prepared a treasure hunt for the kids so we ran around the garden making that happen as well which was a tonne of sweaty fun.
After breakfast, we went to visit my grandmother's grave. This isn't something we do every Eid, but my mother had been meaning to go for a while and it was this day that ended up being very easy for all of us.
Muslim graves in Malaysia are actually landscaped in a special way. The graves have trees planted on them and then left to grow. I love the symbolism behind the practice. There is something so natural and organic about this tradition.
DAY 2:
The second day of Eid we traveled to my mothers home which is a small village town in the south called MUAR. This is something that happens every Eid and most people that work in the big cities will do this too. We actually call it "Balik kampung" which literally means... return to the village.
City dwellers go back to their families hometowns and we visit relative and family members just to call on them and see how they are. Its actually my favourite part of Raya.(Eid)
It's so incredible to see the humble beginnings that our family actually comes from. Really shows you how close your blood is to a life so different from your own.
ALSO, got to film a little bit of my amazing cousin, Zafran Aqil's, insane skills with a Yo-yo. YES! He is the national champion of Malaysia!
Aaaaand after visiting a few different houses we gather our strength at my grandmothers house and then, head back to KL on a 4 hour journey from Muar.
DAY 3:
Ended up spending most of day 3 recovering from day 2. hehe.
Kept it very chilled and only went to visit Qas in the evening to go and have some dinner.
