On Monday, May 8, 2017, at 4:21 p.m. the Venice Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle that drove off the South Jetty and into the waterway. Callers were reporting that there were two subjects inside the vehicle and that the vehicle was slowly submerging. Rescue attempts were made by a Venice Police Officer and citizens who entered the water from the South Jetty as well as a passing boat. The Venice Marine Patrol arrived on scene as the vehicle completely submerged into the Venice Inlet.
As shown below in this witness video obtained by VPD, rescuers placed themselves in harm’s way due to strong winds and tidal current; unfortunately, they were unable to remove the vehicle’s occupants. Additional agencies responded, including the Venice Fire Department, Sarasota County Sheriff’s Marine and SURF Team, Sarasota Police Department Dive Team, U.S. Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and Sarasota County Fire Rescue.
The vehicle was located and towed to Higel Marine Park for further investigation. The victims have been identified as Eugene Hayden (DOB 07/03/1928) and his daughter, Carol Hayden (DOB 12/18/1952).
We would like to thank all additional personnel and bystanders that assisted during this event. At this time, the case is still under investigation pending further review and a Medical Examiner’s Report. For further information, contact the Venice Police Records department, referencing case number 17-0001018.

SANRIZUKA 1972
By Tenmei Kanoh
In the early 1970s, farmers, workers, and students united under the slogan “We will not surrender our land!”. This protest, known as the Narita or Sanrizuka Struggle, led to a series of fierce, bloody battles. A woman in peasant clothing covered all over with mud, in heavy rain, had tied herself to a thick post with steel wire. Riot police were remorselessly tearing her body from the post. Forgetting to press my camera shutter, I yelled “Stop it!”. Forty three years have since passed, and there is a plot of land that remains intact in the middle of the airport, which shows that the protest has been handed on to the next generation. With such deep attachment to the land and tenacity of ownership, I know the profound desire and great fortitude of human beings.
Taking off from the U.S. military’s Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Boeing B-52 bombers repeatedly flew over North Vietnam for air raids. The world saw the break up of the Beatles, and Mick Jagger, with his uniquely curling upper lip, bouncing around the stage in Hyde Park. The younger generation, whether students or non-students, were then very socially active, and they chose to resist authority. The “anger of youth” underlay their daily lives and thought. I suspect that there was a secret government agenda behind the construction of the new airport: with the imminent reversion of Okinawa in 1972, they may have looked to secure Narita as a military air base, while keeping Haneda Airport for civilian use? Decades have past and I wonder what the young of today have in their minds. I wonder whether I will witness their action and intellect in response to the crucial issue of the amendments to the 9th Article of the Constitution of Japan.

*A police officer arrested and gave a DAT to a middle-aged Chinese woman for putting vegetables in her handbag as she was shopping in Whole Foods. She had only been living in the U.S. for four months, so she explained to the officer that she was following the custom in her home country. Obviously frail and disoriented in the courtroom, she reported having a kind of nervous breakdown after the incident, having spent two months in bed before appearing before the judge who then dismissed the case.
*A 50-year-old man was caught up in a “lucky bag” sting. He picked up a handbag left on a bench in Sara Roosevelt Park in Manhattan. The handbag contained a wallet with $3.00 and when the man brought it to an officer, the officer arrested him on the charge of possession of stolen property.
*A police officer arrested a young man for using his girlfriend’s MetroCard.
*A man and his nine-year-old daughter entered a Brooklyn subway station. He accidentally swiped her school-pass MetroCard and she swiped his. The police arrested the man, charging him with theft of services for using his child’s card.
*A twenty-seven year old man has worked as a pedicab driver for three years. He has never been arrested but has been ticketed for moving violations including, for example, driving in the bike lane. Once, when he was taking a break, he was ticketed for “smoking and drinking coffee” which was the actual language used as the charge on the summons. Once, when given a ticket, the officer reassured him that “it’ll get dismissed.”
