我這邊提供一些資訊希望對大家有幫助, 這邊所說的全部都是我個人, 或者是一起念
USC的朋友的經驗, 絕對不是聽說的
分享我的經驗, 是希望大家不要因為"別人"說, "別人"認為, 就做了決定, 那些人不能
幫你過你的生活, 要自己判斷, 好好的決定, 然後不要後悔, 努力往前.
以下不是炫耀更不是打別人的臉, 只是把我的經驗分享: 不要在乎別人的看法, 不要後悔
自己的決定, 好好努力, 真的會有機會給你的. 我不是天才, 也不是強者, 只是相信自己
和持續努力而已
我的背景:
台灣念私立大學, GPA 3.2左右
美國念USC Computer Science, MS degree, 有拿獎學金(下面會提如何拿)
畢業後先在eBay工作, 目前在Google當軟體工程師
首先是如果念USC, 在美國這邊找工作的情況:
每年都會有on campus job fair, 就是很多公司會到校園來徵才面試, 例如Google,
MS, Qualcomm. 我當年並沒有順利在校園面試就拿到offer, 是到畢業後才找到的.
畢業後面試過的比較有名氣的公司有(只是面試, 不是拿到offer): eBay, Amazon,
Linkedin, MS and Google. 這些只是我個人, 我的同學有被Yahoo, Goldman Sachs,
AOL, Sony, Panasonic, VMWare等面試機會. 至於最後拿不拿得到Offer, 那是另外一回
事, 但是這些公司絕對不會因為是USC畢業就發你卡. 真的莫名其妙被發卡, 通常是別的
原因, 例如你的GPA太低(3以下), 或是履歷上什麼都沒有, 學校的project也不認真做.
如果是剛畢業完全沒有工作經驗, 只要GPA很好(例如3.7以上), 通常都是有機會的,
念不到3.7不是學校的問題, 是個人的問題. 但是如果不幸你不太會唸書, 就像我本人
USC GPA也沒能到3.7, 那是不是就沒救? 當然不是, 還有其他方法, 請往下看, 努力還是
可以被Google選中在學校面試的.
念USC的好處:
1) 學校錢多: 這很重要, 如果你是Computer Science的MS, 你可以到任何別的部門申請
RA, 只要拿到RA, 學費全包(最低的RA包9 units), 每個月還給你$800-$1200 (看你拿的
RA等級). 但是要注意, 念CS的可以去別的部門找, 但別系的, 例如當年念EE的同學們只
能在自己的部門找RA機會. 除了本系和外系的RA機會, 也有校園內寫程式打工的機會,
第一學期就可以, 大概$10時薪, 不無小補. 如果沒辦法拿到RA, 又找不到校園打工,
可以找個系上的教授, 他的研就方向你很喜歡, 你就可以去修他的課, 多和他聊天, 通常
就可以先去他實驗室做沒有錢工作, 到了下個學期, 老師覺得你不錯的話就會給你RA,
但是你真的要做事. 如果學校沒有錢, 那這些機會就少很多.
我當年就是去別的部門拿到RA, 所以學費全免, 每個月還有生活費, 也因為這樣, 雖然
GPA不夠好, 但是還是有幸當年被Google選中on campus interview.
當然這些機會是很不容易拿到, 每年進USC的MS students是很多, 但是不要氣餒, 機會
是給努力的人, 這次沒有, 還會有很多機會的.
2) 地處加州: 氣候溫和, 離矽谷算是近(飛機一個半小時), 所以暑期實習機會很多, 不
用擔心沒有機會, 只要唸書的時候認真充實自己, 把自己履歷充實起來, 絕對有很大的
機會. 原PO提到UCI, 當地就有Google office (離USC不遠的Santa Monica也有Google
office), 但是UCI那邊環境比USC好很多是真的. 暑期實習是對將來找工作很重要的一環,
碩士生通常會在那唯一的暑假去做, 很多時候暑期實習做得好, 畢業就給你offer了.
3) 課程: 大部份的課程都非常吃重, 非常重視實作, 很多課程都必須要寫程式, 系上很
多很好的老師, 例如Cyrus Shahabi, Clifford Neuman, Barry Boehm等. 就算你是MS學
生, 你也可以跟這些老師做研究(前面第一點), 還有機會拿到RA. 當然也有好過的課,
你要是想要修那些課就是你的選擇, 和學校無關, USC提供的課程, 我本人看來是絕對足
夠, 如果你只求過關, 當然可以選好過的課, 那畢業後就不要說USC學歷無用, 每次找工
作都被發卡, 那是你個人問題, 和學校無關. 如果你很認真, 那上述那些公司絕對會給
你機會, 完全不用擔心. 如果你拿到RA, 你可故意把必修放著不上, 選其他你有興趣的,
但是我覺得如果這樣乾脆跟一個老師, 好好念個PhD好. USC很多老師都有和業界合作, 很
大的機會畢業後可以到那些公司上班.
由於我不是念UCI, 所以不知道他們那邊課程如何, 但是以USC CS來說, 一學期三個多月,
大概可以修三門課, 可是課程非常吃重, 一個禮拜大概要讀20+以上的papers, 在加上寫
報告和程式, 如果不幸你的英文沒有到達免修英文課的門檻, 還要外加英文課, 是非常
辛苦. 我想UCI應該也有英文課的條件, 所以強烈建議托福考好一點(可以考多次), 不然
要上英文課真的會很累, 而且還要多花錢和時間.
兩間學校畢業生找工作都不是問題, 我覺得你可以好好研究他們的課程內容, 選定了就不
要後悔, 好好的學習, 機會是給認真的人.
也許某些公司看到Top10畢業會直接給offer, 但是很不幸的, 我上面提到的這些公司並不
會這樣,大都要經過面試流程, 面試的時候, 以我的經驗, 面試官都不看我履歷, 也不在乎
我之前做過什麼, 直接就問我問題. 你也許會聽到有些例子說上述公司真的直接給offer
給某Top10畢業生, 但那真的是個案, 你該看的是那個人除了是名校, 還有什麼成就導致
上述公司直接給offer, 可這不代表如果你也進了和他一樣的學校, 畢業後offer就會像
他一樣如雪片般飛來任你選. 有的例子反而是, 名校畢業, 所有問題都答的完美, 履歷也
完美, 但是單單因為工作態度不行, 可能是面試的時候被察覺, 或者內部員工之前有和這
個人共事過給了feedback而被拒.
我目前工作遇到很多人都不是Top10畢業的, 很多學校拿回台灣問, 都會被說是哪間學店,
但是不用理會那些人, 只要你知道你的目標在哪裡, 好好努力朝它前進, 好好過自己想要
過的人生, 學不學店隨他們講, 不要被影響.
