There are things that you only realize when you’re back in your homeland. Watching the beauty of the sunrise over the sea from my home island of Awaji, I sensed hope. The overwhelming beauty of the sea and the sun is a universal experience unchanged since ancient times. When our way forward was unclear, and anxiety was spreading, it brought me a firm feeling of hope. To ensure that I never forget that emotion, I created the work titled inori as public art on Awaji Island, and am now involved in a number of different Awaji projects. Each incorporates my prayers that the hope will continue for ever.
One of those initiatives has now come to fruition. As a project for the regeneration of the traditional performing art of Awaji Ningyo-Joruri, I have been working on the production of a puppet play, Ebisu-mai Plus, to be performed in public at the Awaji Puppet Theatre from March 21 to May 30, 2021. (The opening performance on March 20 is already sold out.) The play will also be streamed live on the “Culture Room by Asami Kiyokawa” YouTube channel. Subscribe to the channel in advance to be sure not to miss it. And if you have the opportunity, please come to the Awaji Puppet Theatre.🌊🌊🌊
