Happy birthday USA/SA photographer, Roger Ballen (born 11 April 1950)!

Roger Ballen was born in New York. During high school, an interest in photography was sparked by the photographic material his mother left around the house. She was an editor for Magnum Photo agency at the time. Ballen was given his first camera upon graduated high school. His mother passed away shortly afterwards resulting in a fervour with taking interesting photographs. After studying psychology at the University of California and receiving his PhD in Mineral Economics from the Colorado School of Mines, in 1982 Ballen arrived in Johannesburg to work in geology. He has been based there ever since. In the early 1990’s, Ballen began photographing the poorer white residents of rural South Africa. His portrayal was not considered socially acceptable and at the release of his first photographic book, he was arrested and received death threats. As his practice matured, so the line between art and documentary began to fade and a dark playfulness entered his work. In 2012, Ballen collaborated with Die Antwoord on the music video I Fink U Freeky, which reached worldwide popularity. Ballen's work is in prestigious museum collections including London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, and New York’s Museum of Modern Art. In 2013, the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution presented a major retrospective of Ballen’s work, to critical acclaim.
