In 1933 nuclear physicist Marie Curie had outgrown her lab in the Latin Quarter in central Paris. To give her the space needed for the messy task of extracting radioactive elements such as radium from truckloads of ore, the University of Paris built a research center in Arcueil, a village south of the city. Today it’s grown into a crowded ­working-class suburb. And the dilapidated lab, set in an overgrown garden near a 17th century aqueduct, is sometimes called Chernobyl on the Seine.

No major accidents occurred at the lab, which closed in 1978. But it’s brimming with radio­activity that will be a health threat for millennia, and France’s nuclear watchdog has barred access to anyone not wearing protective clothing. The lab is surrounded by a concrete wall topped by barbed wire and surveillance cameras. Monitors constantly assess radiation, and local officials regularly test the river. “We’re proof that France has a serious nuclear waste problem,” says Arcueil Mayor Christian Métairie. “Our situation raises questions about whether the country is really equipped to handle it.”

Nuclear power accounts for almost three-fourths of France’s electricity, vs. a fifth in the U.S. There’s no lasting solution for the most dangerous refuse from the country’s 906 nuclear waste sites, including some of what’s in Arcueil. Low-level material is to be sent to an aboveground storage site in northeastern France. But radium has a half-life of 1,600 years, and there are traces of a uranium isotope at the Curie annex with a half-life of 4.5 billion years. “France’s nuclear industry is like a plane that took off without a landing strip,” says Yannick Rousselet, a Greenpeace campaign leader......

如何把寶寶生出來的101條守則：
How to deliver a baby 101:

先列出一個非常詳細的生寶寶計畫，包含以下需要事先想清楚：
自然產 v.s. 剖腹產
有打藥催生 v.s. 無藥
會陰剪開 v.s. 自然撕裂
是否寶寶一生出來就和母體肌膚接觸
是否保存臍帶、臍帶血
Write a very detailed birth plan. Include the following
Vaginal delivery vs. C-section
Medicated vs. Non-medicated
Episiotomy or natural tearing
Skin to skin afterwards or not
Do you want to keep the umbilical cord and cord blood for cord blood registry？

2. 小心翼翼地拿著那本生寶寶計畫並且沿長邊對著中線對折
Take that birth plan and carefully fold it in half, long ways, down the middle.

3. 再將紙攤開來
Open it back up again

4. 將紙的右上角往中線摺成三角形
Fold the top right corner down to the middle line, forming a triangle

5. 將紙的左上角往中線摺成另一個對等的三角形
Fold the left right corner down to the middle line, forming a matching triangle

哈哈。 well， 這個是我自己的經驗啦。
Haha. Well, that’s how it worked out for me in the end anyway.

生小孩之前，我們做很多研究，問了很多朋友然後跟我們的醫生 林思宏醫師 討論了。我跟George決定要用最自然的方式來生小孩， 用最少的醫療。 除非有緊急狀況或是必須的條件，我們盡量不要用催生、針筒、無痛藥或任何其他的藥物，也不想會陰側切或是剖腹。
Before delivering out baby boy, and after doing a lot of research and talking to numerous friends and our physician Dr. Jason Lin, George and I had decided that we wanted as “natural” of a birth as possible, meaning: as little medical intervention as possible. Unless there was a medical emergency or absolute necessity, we wanted no induction, no needles, no pain medication, no episiotomy, and definitely, no surgery.

不過很顯然的我們的寶寶很有想法，他有自己的一套計畫：已經41週大了他就是不打算出來(即便他已經有個超級大頭而且已經3700克)，而且一點產兆都沒有！於是林醫師強烈建議我們催生。因此，在10月9日的中午，我們冷靜的打包好，吃飽午餐，非常平靜的前往醫院。這感覺好像是我們要去一趟三天兩夜的小旅行(嗯哼，最好是)，但其實仔細想一想，我們的寶寶今天就要出來與我們見面這件事其實是蠻嚇人的！這是一種很詭異的平靜卻緊張的氛圍，好像我們一切都很有效率。
Well, our baby had his own plan. He (even with his big ol’ head and already almost 3700g) just didn’t want to come out, and after 41 weeks and not a single sign of labor, Dr. Lin highly recommended that we induce. So, on October 9 at noon, with our bags calmly packed, lunch eaten, we head to the hospital in a weird daze. It felt like we were packing for a 3-day holiday (haha! Yeah right!), but it was also so scary to think that we could have a baby TODAY! It was a strange calmness/nervousness. Almost like we were being too efficient.

其實坐上計程車後我們一度很想請司機回頭，並取消約診，然後回家繼續等。不過仔細想想又覺得，那，我們到底在等什麼？如果我們只是為了固執的等待陣痛自己來臨，卻因此造成拖延而產生很多不可控制的病發症怎麼辦？
There were moments in the short cab ride when we nearly told the taxi to turn around, cancel the appointment, and just wait it out. And then there were times when we thought, well, what exactly are we waiting for? What if we cause some complications because we were stubborn about waiting for contractions to start on their own?

每一位迎接寶寶來臨的準媽媽甚至準爸爸都會害怕自己的寶寶會在準備出生的前幾天因為受臍帶纏繞而窒息，或是寶寶會開始在媽媽肚子的羊水中便便甚而吃到自己的胎便，這其實很危險且容易造成感染，或是胎盤會開始失去功能等等。身為一位母親，妳就是會時不時的替寶寶擔心這擔心那，一切都是為了確保他/她能夠平安。
Every mother and even father has the fear that their baby will get tangled on its umbilical cord and stop breathing just DAYS before he or she is supposed to be born, or that it will start to poop inside and eat it’s own poop inside the amniotic fluid which can be very dangerous and cause infection, or the placenta will start will fail, etc etc. As a mother, you are constantly worried about that baby inside your belly and you just want to do anything possible to make sure it is OK.

所以，因為腦中有這麼多的擔心和顧慮不斷徘徊，於是我們乖乖的聽醫師的話，10月9日的中午12點準時到醫院報到，和飯店check in，喔不是，我是說我們的產房，並且真的開始面對催生這件事。
So, with these concerns and considerations in mind, we listened to our doctor and by 12 noon on October 9th, we checked into our hotel room, I mean, our hospital room, and started INDUCTION.

長話短說，38小時過後，我們的男寶寶來到這個世界。我絕對會說他是我們”美麗的男寶寶”！但你們真的見過寶寶剛生出來的樣子嗎？(George當時是搖滾區) 它當時並不是我認為最美的事物我必須承認...，它其實長得像異形啊！哈哈！
Long story short, 38 hours later, we have our baby boy. I would say our “beautiful baby boy,” but have you SEEN a baby when it comes out?! (George did at the business end). It is not the prettiest thing… it looks like an alien! Haha!

說真的我真的不知道如果沒有林思宏醫師、產房護理長王俐文還有其他護理人員、Holly及許多客服人員們的協助我會怎麼樣。生寶寶真的是件既美妙卻又嚇人的一件事，尤其當妳在分娩的這段期間只有感受到自己的無比脆弱，妳絕對會需要一個懂妳也懂妳的寶寶的團隊來支持妳：一個能不時監測妳和寶寶狀態的專業團隊，且具備充分耐心可以願意一一回答妳百萬種不可思議的問題。妳絕對會需要一個盡量能讓妳感到放心的環境，在這可能是妳人生中最不舒服的一天！(或者舉我為例，我人生中最不舒服的38小時！)
I honestly don’t know what I would have done without the support of Dr. Jason Lin, Wendy (our doula), and the rest of the nurses and staff at 禾馨婦產科-專業母胎兒醫學中心 . Having a baby is a wonderful, yet absolutely terrifying thing, and you feel completely vulnerable when you are going through labor. You need a team by your side who knows what YOU want for your delivery and for you and your baby. A professional group who is there to monitor you and your baby in case anything goes wrong, and who is also caring and supportive enough to answer all of your millions of silly questions. You need an environment which makes you feel as comfortable as possible, in what is going to possibly be THE MOST UNcomfortable day in your life! (Or, in my case, 38 LOOONG hours of my life!)

謝謝林醫師的熱情和專業，尤其在回答我們千奇百怪的問題的同時還能用一套幽默與邏輯來平息我們的不安。如果我真的要再做一次生產這件事，不用問，我一定會讓George來生...哈哈。不過說真的，我真的找不到第二人選來幫我的男寶寶順產接生。
Thank you Dr. Lin for your passion for your job, your professionalism when answering our questions, and your sense of humor to calm our nerves. If I had to do it all over again, there’s no question… I’d make GEORGE have our baby… Haha. But seriously, I can’t think of a better person that I’d rather have deliver our baby boy.

To any moms out there about to deliver a baby, I won’t lie. It is the scariest thing I have ever done in my life. I have never been so nervous or scared about anything before. But hopefully, like me, you have an amazing support group and family by your side… and like me, you will also deliver a healthy, happy and precious baby. YOUR baby. GOOD LUCK. JIA YOU！

PHILADELPHIA — Allen Iverson, with his tattoos, cornrows and hip-hop persona, ended up in the center of a celebratory group hug with the fans in the expensive courtside seats at Wachovia Center.

Seconds earlier, with just 3.3 seconds remaining in overtime and the scored tied, Iverson jumped in front of Jarvis Hayes’ inbound pass near midcourt and raced home for a layup, securing a 116-114 victory for the Philadelphia 76ers over the Washington Wizards.

Iverson, who finished with 28 points, 13 assists and no turnovers, could not contain his elation at game’s end. He raised his hand to his ear as if to let the 17,516 “Black Friday” fans know he couldn’t hear them. He then jumped on the seats in the first row, threw his hands around the shoulders of any fan who would fit and whooped it up with the smiling group as the 76ers (6-6) celebrated a win over the Wizards (6-5), whose three-game winning streak ended.

The scene, involving one of the biggest yet most controversial stars in the league, stood in stark contrast to the incident involving the Indiana Pacers’ Ron Artest, Jermaine O’Neal and Stephen Jackson and the rogue Detroit Pistons fans, who engaged in one of the ugliest rumbles in the history of American professional sports Nov.19.

“I hope I don’t get fined or suspended for going in the stands, but I think my reason was a good one,” Iverson said. “It was just special. They were right there. Without them I don’t think we would have had the momentum to be able to get over the hump after those guys hit big shot after big shot. Hopefully, fans will remember it and cherish it for the rest of their lives.”

The Wizards will remember it. Cherishing it is something altogether different.

Washington played the game while coach Eddie Jordan mended in a Washington-area hospital following the discovery of blood clot in his left calf Thanksgiving Day.

“I spoke to him before the game,” said assistant coach Mike O’Koren, who filled in for Jordan. “He’s doing a lot better. He’s fine. He’s coming along, but it’s going to take some time.”

Barring complications, Jordan will return to the bench Wednesday when the Wizards play host to New Jersey.

In their failed attempt to win their fourth game in a row for the first time in nearly three years, the Wizards erased Philadelphia’s 91-82 lead in the final six minutes of regulation, then forced overtime when Hayes (18 points, seven rebounds) split two defenders from 26 feet and drilled one of the Wizards’ 10 3-pointers to send the game to overtime tied 103-103.

Antawn Jamison led the Wizards, who packed the box score with his fifth double-double (27 points, season-high 15 rebounds) of the season. Larry Hughes had a spectacular game, scoring 20 points to go with 12 rebounds and nine assists. Gilbert Arenas added 20 points, and Brendan Haywood finished with his second double-double (14 points, season-high 14 boards) in the loss.

“I don’t think we could have played any better,” said Arenas, who was Hayes’ intended target on the final inbound pass and thought he was fouled on Iverson’s steal. “He went through me to get the ball. So they let him get the ball to see if he could make it in two seconds, which he did. So you can’t do anything about it.”

Hayes also thought Arenas might have been fouled on the play. But the Wizards made their share of mistakes along the way including 17 turnovers that led to 23 points, compared with Philadelphia’s eight that led to seven.

“It’s tough,” Hayes said. “God almighty, it’s tough. It’s one of those things that seems almost a backbreaker. But we’ve got practice tomorrow, and then we’ve got to play at Toronto.”

While Iverson starred for the 76ers, he was not a one-man show. Kyle Korver shot 6-for-12 from behind the 3-point arc to finish with career highs in points (26) and rebounds (eight). Center Marc Jackson finished with 21 points and eight rebounds. And reserves John Salmons (16) and Samuel Dalembert (13) combined to give the 76ers bench a 38-22 scoring advantage.

But Iverson’s play and the ensuing victory celebration overshadowed everything else.

“Games that end like that always hurt you the most,” said Hughes, who spent his first two years in the NBA as Iverson’s teammate in Philadelphia. “That’s what he does. I know that he liked the angle he had to the ball. For a guy who likes to steal the ball, that was the perfect pass.”

Michael Jordan's coach pleaded with him to go back in the game, and the opposing coach made sure Jordan had the chance to end his career with a basket. Jordan's last shot was a free throw, and like his final appearance in an NBA uniform, it was good.

One of the greatest players in NBA history played the final game of his illustrious career Wednesday night, not in the setting that he would have preferred but in a special atmosphere nonetheless. Jordan's final moment on the court ended with him receiving applause and a lengthy standing ovation from nearly everyone in the arena — including the coaches and the other players.

He soaked it all up with a wide smile and a wave to the crowd after exiting for good with 1:44 remaining in the fourth quarter of a 107-87 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

"Now I guess it hits me that I'm not going to be in a uniform anymore — and that's not a terrible feeling," Jordan said afterward. "It's something that I've come to grips with, and it's time. This is the final retirement."

Jordan finished with 15 points, four rebounds and four assists in 28 minutes — drawing several adoring ovations from the last sellout crowd that will ever watch him play.

"The Philly people did a great job. They gave me the biggest inspiration, in a sense," Jordan said. "Obviously, they wanted to see me make a couple of baskets and then come off. That was very, very respectful, and I had a good time."

Jordan's final points almost looked scripted, with Eric Snow of the 76ers fouling him in the backcourt for no apparent reason except to send him to the line.

"Coach (Larry Brown) told me to foul him, get him to the line to get some points and get him out of there," Snow said.

Both foul shots went in, and the Wizards committed a foul one second later so that Jordan could be removed from the game and receive the proper send-off. In a rare scene, the 10 players who remained on the court turned to Jordan and applauded, too.

The 40-year-old Jordan would have preferred to end his career in the playoffs, but the Wizards never clicked during his two years in Washington and finished 37-45 in both seasons.

But that was merely a footnote on this stirring night, the last time the basketball public was treated to one of the greatest athletes in history playing the game one last time.

Jordan finished his career with 32,292 points — the third-highest total in league history, behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone. His final career average of 30.12 goes down as the best in NBA history, just ahead of Wilt Chamberlain's 30.07.

"I never, never took the game for granted. I was very true to the game, and the game was very true to me. It was just that simple," Jordan said.

With the Sixers ahead by 21 points with 9½ minutes remaining, the crowd began chanting "We want Mike." The chant grew louder as the period progressed with Jordan remaining seated, and fans ignored the game to stand and stare at the Wizards' bench, wondering why Jordan wasn't playing.

This being Philadelphia, they eventually booed.

Jordan finally pulled his warmups off and re-entered the game with 2:35 left for his brief final appearance.

"I played here. I told him I at least have to be able to come back (to Philadelphia)," Wizards coach Doug Collins said. "I told him to go back in for a minute. He said, 'I'm stiff.' I said, 'Please. They want to see you.' He said, 'Larry Hughes is going to foul out soon, so put me in then.'"

Earlier in the game, Jordan showed his age.

There was a play in the first quarter when he looked like the Jordan of old, except for the result. Starting near the foul line, Jordan ducked his shoulder, lowered his head, stuck out his tongue and drove to his right, the ball rolling off his fingers ever so softly as it arched toward the net.

Rather than going in, though, the ball hit the front rim and missed — one of several of his shots that came up a few inches short.

One of the exceptions was Jordan's final shot of the first half — a one-handed dunk that came after he received a nice pass under the basket from Bobby Simmons.

Jordan hit his first two shots of the third quarter but didn't do much else positive in the period. On an alley-oop pass from Tyronn Lue, the ball hit him in the fingertips and bounced harmlessly away. A lazy crosscourt pass was picked off by Aaron McKie, leading to one of Philadelphia's 31 fast-break points. Jordan's final field-goal attempt was a missed layup with 8:13 remaining.

"I'm not embarrassed," Jordan said, "but it's just not ... I've had better feelings in terms of playing a competitive game."

Allen Iverson kept the ball this time.

A week after passing up a chance at a winning shot against the Utah Jazz, Iverson hit an off-balance runner with 0.2 seconds left to give the Detroit Pistons a 90-88 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday night.

The play was for me to run the clock down and try to get to the basket, he said. There wasnt much time for me to create anything else.

Last Friday, Iverson passed the ball to Rodney Stuckey, who missed a 3-pointer at the end of the first overtime, and Utah went on to win.

Having already scored a dozen points in the fourth quarter on Friday, Iverson took things in his own hands.

That was a great play by Allen, Pistons coach Michael Curry said. He hadnt had much going for him in the first three quarters, but then he took over the game.

Detroit have taken eight straight against the Thunder, and havent lost to the franchise at home since the former Seattle SuperSonics won 93-72 on Dec. 12, 2003. The Pistons didnt have an easy time Friday, though, as they struggled to beat Oklahoma City (3-27).

Were a young team that is still learning how to finish games, and they are a great team that knows how to do that, Chris Wilcox said. A.I. had a terrific fourth quarter, and we just didnt have an answer for him.

Thats been the story of the Pistons season. They have wins over the Lakers and Cavaliers, but have lost to the hapless Wizards and Timberwolves.

We keep having lapses, Iverson said. This team only has three wins, so they are going to be hungry, but we have beaten two of the best teams in the league and lost to two of the worst.

It almost happened again Friday, even after Iversons off-balance jumper. Jeff Green nearly tipped in a halfcourt alley-oop, but the ball bounced twice off the rim before falling harmlessly away.

It was a good look, and Jeff is one of our better leapers, Oklahoma city coach Scott Brooks said. It just slipped out of his hands. Its unfortunate, because it would have been a great overtime.

Iverson led the Pistons with 22 points, and Tayshaun Prince added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Kevin Durant had 26 points and eight rebounds for the Thunder.

The Pistons looked sluggish for most of the first three quarters. Oklahoma City shot 39 percent through three periods, but trailed only 66-63 heading into the fourth.

Detroit took advantage of two turnovers by the Thunder in the first minute of the final period to expand its lead to 70-63.

The Pistons were up 14 midway through the fourth, but an 11-0 run pulled Oklahoma City to 84-81 with 2 minutes left.

Iverson then threw the ball away, and Durants jumper made it a one-point game with 1:33 left. Rodney Stuckey answered with a driving layup, but Iverson fouled Russell Westbrook, and the rookie split the free throws to make it 86-84.
