Decided to visit one of my favourite Chinese restaurants and support them during trying times. It’s been more than a year since I got to dine at Hong Ngek Restaurant, and I miss the dishes!
The pandemic has hit them hard too, and Aunty and her workers are doing their best to ride this out. She plans to go on for as long as she can for the sake of her workers who have been with her for decades.
If you’re looking for old-school (and delicious) Chinese dishes, call the Aunty. I promise you, the food is delicious. Crab meat balls, barbecue pork ribs, fish curry, pork knuckle and herbal chicken are my usual order.
They are open until 6pm on Monday - Friday, and until 3pm on Saturday (closed Sunday).

Many years ago, I used to reside at Desa Pandan in town which is quite near to Pudu & Jalan Pasar area. The old part of Kuala Lumpur bears many tasty memories for me during my 14 years of stay in Klang Valley. 😍😍

We went down to Mrs Pho to demolish a MASSIVE 6KG (13LB) PHO CHALLENGE! Mrs Pho, located at 313@somerset, serves authentic Vietnamese cuisine and specialises in its namesake, pho. The chef, a feisty Vietnam native, offered us a mega version of her special menu item, Premium Short Ribs Pho. Only offered at Mrs Pho’s Somerset outlet and created by the chef herself, the bowl comes with your usual pho toppings of beef balls and sliced beef but with the addition of a hefty piece of short rib that was sous vide-ed for 36 hours.
With over 5 portions of noodles, 3-4 servings of meat and a bucketful of broth, the bowl came up to a whopping 6KG. I began with the star of the pho, the short rib, and it really was the best part. Succulently tender and meaty together with a hit of umami from being submerged in the pho broth. Adding on the available chilli sauce helped to bring out a different dimension to the short rib.
The broth itself was not as strong as I had expected, actually being mild yet not bland. It served as a good base for you to craft the bowl to your own liking and to bring out the flavours of the toppings. You can add chilli for more spiciness, fish sauce for greater saltiness and Vietnamese-style brown sauce (tasted sort of like marmite) for an umami kick.
I especially enjoyed the noodles, which had bite to them and soaked up the broth beautifully. The beef balls were excellent as well, firm and bouncy. They also serve a special in-house chilli sauce that was devilishly spicy. I could not handle it but I am sure most of you would enjoy it immensely.
This was a pleasurable challenge that I completed in under 30 minutes, which is decent for a massive 6KG bowl of pho. Mrs Pho’s Somerset outlet is newly opened and located right at the entrance to the MRT station in the building. Massive queues are common on weekends (a testament to their excellent food) so be sure to plan adequately for your visit to Mrs Pho!

How you make the batter is the key. My mom uses Takoyaki flour and tasty Dashi broth, then makes the batter bit loose and less salty. In this way we can eat Takoyaki forever with No Sauce 😂👍
Serving Takoyaki with Dashi broth is our typical family style. Sometimes we put sauce then pour over the Dashi but this time, no one used the sauce because the batter was a success. Takoyaki is a popular Japanese ball-shaped snack made of batter, diced octopus, tenkasu (tempura scraps), beni shoga (red pickled ginger), and aonegi (green onion), topped with okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise, aonori (green laver), and katsuobushi (bonito flakes). Slightly crispy on the outside and creamy inside.

How to Make Takoyaki
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 30min
Number of servings: 40 pieces
Necessary Equipment:
Takoyaki pan
spouted measuring cup
oil brush (you can make it with paper towel, chopsticks, and rubber band)
steel pick (long bamboo pick is ok)
Ingredients:
200g (7oz.) takoyaki flour
2 egg
600cc water
cooking oil
Fillings
* diced boiled octopus
* chikuwa (fish cake) if you like
* beni shoga (red pickled ginger)
* tenkasu (tempura scraps)
* aonegi (green onion)
Sauce
* okonomiyaki sauce
* mayonnaise
* katsuobushi (bonito flakes)
* aonori (green laver)
Directions:
1. In a bowl, mix takoyaki flour, eggs, and water (add little by little).
2. Heat takoyaki pan and grease the molds with cooking oil.
3. Pour batter into the molds to the full.
4. Put beni shoga, tenkasu, aonegi, and octopus or chikuwa in each mold.
5. Wait a little until batter on the edge of the molds become cooked.
6. Flip takoyaki with a pick, fix the form by flipping, and cook until golden brown.
How to serve:
1. Place on a plate and top with okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise, katsuobushi, and aonori.
2. With dashi broth. (boil 200cc water and 2 tbsp. Kamada dashi soy sauce**)
3. With grated radish and ponzu sauce.
4. With sausage. (cut sausage into half. finely cut outer curve of the sausage and cook. place takoyaki and draw face with nori and ketchup.)

พัฒนาจากหมูก้อนให้มีมิติมากขึ้นด้วยส่วนผสมของปลาเค็ม เสิร์ฟในรูปแบบอาหารจานเดียวกับข้าวสวยร้อนๆ ตัวชิ้นหมูพรมด้วยซอสบางๆ โรยด้วยกระเทียมเจียว เคล้าหอมและพริก ปรุงด้วยน้ำมะนาวนิดหน่อยก็อร่อยแล้ว
ส่วนประกอบหมูสับปลาเค็มทอด
สันคอหมู 400 กรัม / ปลาอินทรีเค็ม 80 กรัม / กระเทียม 3 กลีบ/
รากผักชี 3 ราก / เม็ดพริกไทยขาว 1 ช้อนชา / ซอสปรุงรส 1 ช้อนชา/
ซอสหอยนางรม 2 ช้อนชา / น้ำตาลทราย 1 ช้อนชา / แป้งข้าวโพด 1 ช้อนโต๊ะ/
ไข่ไก่ 1 ฟอง / น้ำมันรำข้าว สำหรับทอด / กระเทียมเจียว สำหรับเสิร์ฟ/
หอมแดง (ซอย) สำหรับเสิร์ฟ / มะนาว สำหรับเสิร์ฟ / พริกจินดา (ซอย) สำหรับเสิร์ฟ/
ผักชี สำหรับเสิร์ฟ / ข้าวสวย สำหรับเสิร์ฟ
ส่วนประกอบซอส
ซอสหอยนางรม 1 ช้อนโต๊ะ / ซอสปรุงรส 1 ช้อนชา / น้ำตาลทราย ½ ช้อนชา/
น้ำสะอาด 1 ช้อนชา
1. เตรียมซอส โดยผสมส่วนประกอบทั้งหมด นำเข้าไมโครเวฟให้น้ำตาลละลาย พักไว้
2. ตั้งน้ำมัน ทอดปลาเค็มให้สุกดี พักให้เย็น เลาะเนื้อออกเป็นชิ้นเล็กๆ
3. โขลกรากผักชี กระเทียม และพริกไทย ใส่ลงในชามผสม ปรุงรสด้วยซอสปรุงรส ซอสหอยนางรม และน้ำตาลทราย
4. สับเนื้อหมู ก่อนนำไปผสมกับปลาเค็มที่เตรียมไว้ให้เข้ากันดี นำไปเคล้ากับส่วนผสมที่โขลกไว้ ใส่ไข่ไก่ และแป้ง นวดให้เข้ากัน
5. ตั้งน้ำมันรำข้าวที่ 180 องศาเซลเซียส ปั้นหมูเป็นก้อนขนาด 2 ช้อนโต๊ะ นำลงทอดให้สุกดี
6. ตักข้าวใส่จาน จัดเรียงชิ้นหมูทอดลงไป พรมบางๆ ด้วยน้ำซอส โรยด้วยกระเทียมเจียว เคียงด้วยหอม พริก มะนาว และผักชี
Fried Salted Fish Pork Ball with Rice
For the best Thai porkballs, we add salted mackerel to create alluring and deep flavour layer on the crunchy salty treat, top on the rice with various herbs and sticky sauce.
Fried Salted Fish Pork Ball
Pork Neck 400 g / Salted Mackerel 80 g / Garlic 3 cloves/
Coriander Root 3 roots / White Peppercorn 1 tsp / Seasoning Sauce 1 tsp/
Oyster Sauce 2 tsp / Sugar 1 tsp / Corn Starch 1 tbsp / Egg 1/
Rice Bran Oil / Crispy Garlic / Shallot (sliced) for serving / Lime for serving/
Thai Chilli (sliced) for serving / Coriander for serving / Steamed Rice for serving
Sauce
Oyster Sauce 1 tbsp / Seasoning Sauce 1 tsp / Sugar ½ tsp / Water 1 tsp
1. For Sauce: mix all the ingredient into a bowl. Microwave and stir until sugar dissolved. Set aside.
2. Fry the salted mackerel in the hot oil until golden brown and crispy. Remove pinbone and break into small lumps.
3. Pound coriander roots, garlic and pepper before transferring to the mixing bowl. Add seasoning sauce, oyster sauce and sugar.
4. Mince the pork and combine with salted fish meat. Transfer to the mixing bowl with the seasoning and mix. Once combined, add egg and flour before mix again.
5. Heat the oil to 180°C and roll 2 tbsp of pork into round balls. Fry until porkballs are cooked and crispy on the edge.
6. Serve with a plate of rice, a drizzle of sauce, garnish with crispy garlic and sides with shallot, chillies lime wedge and coriander.
