Sharing two must try dishes if you are at @bondingkitchen Kacang Botox Kerabu ($16) — one solid good salad of zesty bright flavors which we hardly find in other Peranakan places. Young wing beans are tossed with shrimps in a calamansi dressing made from mint and lemongrass. The ikan bilis and roasted cashew provided the extra crunch to this dish.
Udang Sambal Petai ($22) - Petai beans might not be the thing for everyone but this dish has a pleasant sweetness in the sambal sauce which complemented the caramelized shallots. Not quite the usual sambal dish u find elsewhere as well 👍

Recently learnt about a new Peranakan place which serves really tasty Peranakan dishes that would make me want to go back again. It is opened by chef-owner Danny Chew who used to do private home-dining.
This Nasi Goreng Buah Keluak ($15) with fried egg, crispy shallots was fragrant without being overpowered by the savoury nut. The Barramundi Assam ($26) cooked in a secret recipe gravy of lemongrass and laksa leaf was tangy and not too spicy. A good switch from the Chinese food during this CNY season

For this episode, we destroyed a MASSIVE 6.3KG (14LB) Curry Rice courtesy of Jack’s Kitchen at Old Airport Road Food Centre! Due to renewed Covid-19 restrictions, dining out has become impossible. We scoured the island for the best takeaway options for a mukbang challenge and Jack’s Kitchen was kind enough to supply us with their specialised curry rice offerings.
For this challenge, I ate:
12 portions of rice
5 Pork Cutlets
5 Chicken Cutlets
6 Fried Eggs
A truckload of Javanese-style curry
The curry was thick and luscious, with a strong coconut flavour and spiced closer to a Javanese/Peranakan style curry with just a hint of chilli. The cutlets were both extremely crispy, but the pork cutlets really stood out with their different breading (possibly panko) and seasoning.
This was a challenging mukbang that really helped me stretch my limit after the food poisoning fiasco. Owned by a friendly elderly couple, it would be good to help them out in such trying times for the hawker industry. I strongly recommend the pork cutlet!

We went down to the Legendary Beach Road Scissors Cut Curry Rice to complete a Curry Rice Challenge! Beach Road Scissors Cut Curry Rice is a famous Hainanese Curry Rice shop located at Jalan Besar. They are a mainstay for late-night patrons looking for an affordable meal, closing only in the wee hours of the morning and a fully-loaded plate would cost between $4-6 dollars depending on your choice of toppings.
Hainanese Curry Rice is a uniquely Singaporean dish inspired by British, Hainanese and Peranakan settlers in Singapore. A standard serving would include a fried egg, pork chops, braised pork belly and braised cabbage piled on white rice before being smothered by a thick, fragrant curry. Different restaurants would have their own take on the curry and toppings provided, with the curry usually being thick but varying in taste.
For my giant plate, I requested 7 portions of rice, a pile of braised cabbage, fried eggs, braised pork belly, chicken chops, pork chops, curried chicken wings, deep-fried tofu and rounded it off with some assorted greens. As per their namesake, each meat item was cut upon serving with a pair of scissors.
This monster plate was then generously topped with curry, the tofu braising liquid and a spicy red gravy, enveloping the entire plate with messy goodness.
The curry was thicker than other places I have tried, barely sweet with a hint of spiciness. It could have been a lot more flavourful. The standout topping would be the pork cutlet, juicy on the inside with a crunchy exterior, with the mild tasting curry allowing the excellent flavour of the cutlet to shine. However, the pork belly was rather disappointing, bland and extremely chewy. Overall, the combination of the 3 sauces with rice and a side is a winning combination, especially considering the cost.
If you are in the area or looking a late-night supper, you could do a lot worse than Beach Road Scissors Cut Curry Rice.

Woody Family Cafe is tucked away in the northernmost reaches of Sembawang. When I stepped inside, I felt like Alice as she opened the door to Wonderland. Coloured lights bathe the cafe in shades of red, blue and green, illuminating all sorts of baubles and knickknacks.
Many of these eclectic decorations were collected while the owners, Jenny and Sam, were travelling all over the world. Woody Family’s dishes are traditional Peranakan recipes passed down from Jenny’s mother. These were then refined and reimagined by Jenny, who created many unique and modern dishes that are still undeniably Peranakan!
