THIS IS NOT OKAY.
I am absolutely livid right now. It's not OK to use intellectual property without permission. It's not OK to use people's life stories without permission. And it's DEFINITELY not OK to get people to play someone without their permission.
Here's the run-down:
A while back, a group who was part of the Creator Collective - Asia programme contacted me. They said that they wanted to use my story as Singapore's First Mermaid to create a video and "headline a pitch to Singapore Tourism Board. STB is looking for ideas for a campaign to get Singaporeans to buy into the latest tagline for their campaign, "Passion made Possible". They said that "this is a pitch video to STB, it will be very short and it won't be broadcast or made public... We get real clients like Lazada, Chan Brothers etc, and my group has Singapore Tourism Board as a client."
STB was unaware of these micro-happenings and is not at fault.
I sent them some underwater footage taken of me by myself and my contacts, as a sample for what filming underwater with me would look like.
Based on this knowledge that it was a pitch to STB and the impression the contact gave that it was an official pitch and prospective job, I agreed to meet up with them to find out more about the project.
It was only when I met them in person that the group clarified that this "pitch" was part of a campaign simulation competition held for all the Creator Collective groups, and was a student initiative.
I was unable to commit to the project and didn't hear back from the group again.
... Fast forward to today, when I realized with a shock that the group went ahead to produce their final presentation video using my story. Using my underwater videos, my IP. They had also taken some videos about me from YouTube - the video IP for these lay with other news companies who hadn't given permission either. Note that I'd not heard anything from the group in ages and had not in any way been informed that they were going ahead with my story. Neither had I given permission for my mermaiding videos to be used. None of the videos were credited to me, giving the impression that the group had filmed the underwater sequences themselves and that the impersonator (read on) was really me.
[/edit: we've realized that the group also snagged and ripped some videos of myself and the Singapore Mermaid School and our clients off YouTube. This means that 1) not only are there multiple infractions because all those people were featured in the group's presentation without knowledge or consent, but also that 2) Channel NewsAsia 's intellectual property has been similarly compromised, as one of the clips was created and published by them as a feature on us]
To top that all off - they roped in a random person to impersonate me in a faux-interview. She appears in the video subtitled and credited as me: "Cara/Syrena: Founder of the Singapore Mermaid School". Artistic liberties were also taken with my life story: e.g I have never lived by the ocean.
The real kicker? Using this video about my life story, my IP, and my abused, misrepresented image, this project was presented to STB (an organization I had hoped to work with in the future) and bagged the group 1st Prize in this year's Creator Collective competition and a $7000 grant cheque to fund their future projects.
Adding to all that, this has since been published on:
- YouTube (since taken down, but not before it garnered views)
- Instagram
- major news sites such as Straits Times
- Business Times + Business Times' Twitter
- and in print newspapers.
Here is the link to an album containing all of the evidence: https://drive.google.com/open?id=18auehI29f_bm5YCBU-YkrxC2A4Wh7h9q
We cropped out their IG usernames and blurred their eyes because I can't help being nice.
There might be other media outlets running the story of the win that I'm not aware of as well.
Call it a miscommunication all you want, but 1) to use someone's life story without permission 2) to use someone's IP without permission 3) to impersonate/allow impersonation without permission or a disclaimer is wrong in all books.
I'm not usually a confrontational person. I don't enjoy drama. But on the behest of the people in my life who have all supported me and journeyed with me through this hard-earned career, I have to speak out. To defend my name. My reputation. This brand I've built from the bottom up over years. My image, which I've honed to the standard of excellence that myself, my school, and my mermaids are known for locally and internationally.
I hope that the right people see this, and do the right things to correct this wrong. This shouldn't have happened.
UPDATE 1: I have posted a video to my page talking about recent updates.
UPDATE 2: Article posted by Rice Media, detailing both sides of the story. A highly detailed account - read it and decide for yourself what to think of all this. http://ricemedia.co/current-affairs-features-students-stole-work-impersonated-me-won-7000/
UPDATE 3: CC has finally connected me with STB. Her email, however, continues to victim blame. She also has attempted to change tack to claim that the phone call and request to silence my post was her own personal request. This is false. She made it extremely clear in 2 separate phonecall occasions to myself and my business partner that 1) STB had complained to CC that my post presents STB in a bad light and 2) It was STB who had told CC to tell me to take my post down.
UPDATE 4: I responded with an email addressing the victim blaming and the continued allegations CC/BNM continues to make.
I said that although I have considerable legal grounds, I want to give the groups a chance to voluntarily make reparations. I simply asked for 2 official public apologies: one by CC/BNM and one by Magnificent 7.
I also clearly stated that these 2 apologies would have to be vetted by me before circulation. (lest the 2 parties miss out or misrepresent certain events and clauses)
UPDATE 5 (MAJOR): STB replied this email, stating that they treat IP theft and impersonation very seriously. They also stated that they did NOT complain about my post to Joanne of CC/BNM, and never contacted her to tell me to take my post down.
UPDATE 6 (MAJOR) : I have received word from a reporter contacting me for my side of the story, that CC has gone ahead to issue an official statement cum press release focusing on winner disqualification.
Note that it's been radio silence from them to me.
UPDATE 7: I have posted my final statement on my page.

Good read
Tan Sri Tony Fernandes the majority shareholder and the owner of AIR ASIA.
His top 10 tips for entrepreneurs
1) You don’t need to know everything
I came from the music business. I knew nothing about planes. To all the entrepreneurs out there, you don’t need to know everything about what you want to do. It’s all about the idea, it’s about passion, it’s about implementing it.
2) Just do it!
Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. You’ve got one life, so you can’t press the rewind button and say ‘I wished I had done that.’
So I recommend to all of you out there, just do it. Live your life to the utmost, be positive. If you fail, at least you have tried.
I have failed miserably at Formula One, but I have no regrets because I got to stand with the greats from Ferrari, McLaren, and others.
3) Passion is a key problem-solver
Dreams do come true. Don’t worry about failure. You have one life, make the most out of it. Nine times out of 10, if you have the passion, you will find a way to work through it.
4) Invest in marketing
If you have the greatest idea in the world, please, please, please put some money on marketing. This is because if you don’t put money on marketing, nobody is going to hear about your great idea.
There are so many great ideas that never took off because of a lack of marketing.
Marketing is not about the dollars, it is also about public relations (PR). In AirAsia, we had no money. So I ran around with a red cap on and said controversial things so that the press would always take a picture of me. That was our marketing in AirAsia’s early days.
We have been through so many issues, and marketing played a key role in overcoming them.
Remember SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome)? At that time, nobody wanted to fly; we all thought we are going to die.
Everyone cut their advertising, but I told my guys not to cut because this was the best time to build our brand. In fact, we tripled our advertising and everyone looked at me and said, “Are you on drugs?” I said, no, it is the best time because no one else is advertising.
When the first Bali bomb attack happened, everyone cancelled their flights. I said to the guys, we cannot let the Bali route die. We must continue to fly.
So we came up with ‘Love Bali’ campaign, giving away 10,000 free seats, and it worked. All 10,000 seats were snapped up in like under one minute. And all those who got those seats told all their friends about it on social media. Your best advertisement is your customers.
5) Leverage social media
When Malaysians get a good deal, they will tell the whole world about it. So the 10,000 people who went and had a good time in Bali, told 10,000 people that they had a good time. That was the early gestation of AirAsia’s social media.
We realised the power of social media very early on, so when Facebook and Twitter came up, we latched onto them. We were early adopters. We now have 32 million people on our various social media platforms, and 7 per cent of our business comes directly from social media.
The Bali campaign taught us that our best advertisements are our customers.
6) Don’t be scared of complaints
Complaints are actually free market research. Someone took the effort to write to you to tell you where things went wrong and how they should be improved. These are things that companies pay a lot of money for consultants to tell them that same thing.
So we treat every email preciously.
7) Focus on one image when it comes to branding
During the early days, there was the word ‘AirAsia’ and a logo of a bird in our branding.
If you look at the top brands in the world, there’s only one image that comes to your mind. When I say “Shell,” you think of the Shell logo. When I say “Coca-Cola,” you think of the word ‘Coke’ in italics, and when I say “Nike,” you think of the swoosh.
So, back to our earlier AirAsia brand, we said drop the bird – we felt it was facing the wrong way anyway – and we used ‘AirAsia’ as our logo. Just one image. Why spend double the money to promote two images?
We also dropped the blue and the green colours. I tried very hard not to go with red, because everyone thinks that I want to be Richard Branson [the Virgin Group founder and Fernandes’ former boss] ... but it was the best colour, so we picked red.
So yes, the colour does make a big difference!
8) Go on the ground
What I used to do – although I don’t do this anymore – was that once a month, I would carry bags, I would be a cabin crew [member], and also at the check-in counter.
I did this for two reasons. The first is that you can’t be an effective CEO (chief executive officer) unless you go on the ground to experience the real situation.
Here’s a true story. The baggage handling team told me that they needed belt loaders. I told them, “No, we can’t buy that as it’s too expensive.”
So one day when I was tasked to carry bags, they put me on one of the Indonesia flights. People who fly with us generally bring their house with them, but people who fly to Indonesia bring their neighbour’s house as well!
So there was a lot of bags. I broke my back in the process, and I told my team that they were right and I was wrong, and let’s buy the belt loaders.
If I didn’t do that [go on the ground] and just sat comfortably in the office, I would have made a wrong decision, damaged a lot of bags, and probably started a union.
The second reason [for going on the ground] is that I wanted to look for talent. I wasn’t looking for the talents from Oxford or Cambridge, I was looking for the Grade 3 SPM [O Levels equivalent] kind of guys who needed a second chance.
9) Never underestimate the potential of your staff
I broke all the rules in terms of hiring people. To me, as long as you have a dream, you can do anything.
There was an ex-cabin crew member – she came up to me one day and told me that her dream was to become a pilot. I told her to go for it.
Then she called me up one day and asked if she could take part in the Miss Thailand [beauty pageant], and I told her okay, as long as I get to use her photographs in our marketing materials.
She won the [Miss Universe Thailand] pageant and recently became a captain – so we are the only airline in the world with a Miss Thailand flying with us.
The moral of the story is that we have such a flat structure that she was able to tell me what her dreams were, and we were able to make a raw diamond into a diamond.
Another one of my boys, a baggage handler in Kuching, told me he wanted to become a pilot. I told him to go for it. He passed all the exams ... he had the top marks in the flying academy. Today, he is a captain.
We have many of such stories at AirAsia.
Your biggest assets, besides your ideas, are your people – because at the end of the day, it is the people who will deliver your ideas.
10) Data is king
We have a huge amount of data that we don’t know what to do with it, but everyone else wants our data ... so we figured it must be something very valuable and there must be an opportunity there.
We are investing in a few ventures. We plan to launch our own version of TripAdvisor, a travel dongle, a new YouTube-type of channel and more – data will be playing an essential role in these ventures. Data will be king.

This is not the end of Vietnam videos! Good news! When I left Vietnam in early March (when this video was filmed) I never thought I would be returning so soon. That's right, I'm coming back during the summer for 1 month only to film more content. I am only visiting and have no plans to move back. I was given an opportunity a few weeks ago through a flight sponsorship to film a documentary about a boat refugee story that is quite compelling. There's someone out there who really enjoyed my boat refugee videos and want their story told. It's as simple as that. If I could get these stories on a mainstream site, like the Huff Post, I feel like I've done what little I could to preserve Vietnamese history through oral history. If we don't record history, it'll be lost forever. I was unsure but with the approval of my parents, I'm going to accept this blessing and opportunity. Hard work pays off in ways you could never imagine it. Plus, I felt incomplete towards the end of my stay in Vietnam because I couldn't film as many documentaries as possible, including one about my grandmother. In order for me to truly begin something new, I have to finish what I started. I feel very "unfinished" right now. I just ran out of time from having to edit so much. In the past two months I've met so many of you and to hear your support and love for Vietnam videos, made me feel like it was my duty to delay reality a little longer so I could present more content. In other words, a month of my time can equate to two or three months worth of videos that many people can enjoy. I don't miss Vietnam and I'm happier since leaving, but I'm excited to get back to see Vietnam from a slightly different perspective as a tourist and not as someone living there. During the summer, a lot of familiar faces and featured guests will also be there, so it would be very fitting to be there as well. I can't wait to see my friends and family again. There are other opportunities that also came up that allowed me to make this decision, but you will see them at a later time. This is kind of a redemption trip for me where I can tie up all the loose strings and feelings of incompleteness that I've felt since leaving. Again, I want to emphasize that I'm happy and fine since leaving. There's no yearning to move away from America right now, but I do have a passion to create a few more Vietnam videos. I don't really care much about the famous places as I have been to most of them, but this time it's more about telling stories. I will have some travel vlogs as usual, but I want to focus more on short documentaries. Again, thank you for everyone who wrote me messages the past few days. Nothing much has changed in life, I'm currently in SoCal just editing videos like crazy every day. You will love the Vietnamese diaspora content coming up and the limited run Vietnam content coming in the near future. So my question to you is, and probably for the last time is, what would you like to see in Vietnam?
My biggest regret when it comes to living in Vietnam for over 5 years is the fact that I worked too hard, especially on weekends, and didn't have a chance to spend more time with my family. I was too tired from work to make the drive and I didn't want to displace anyone from their rooms. I didn't want to bother them or I was annoyed of their antics and opinions. It was also very hot most of the time as few of my relatives actually have AC in common areas. Towards the end of my sojourn, I visited them more often and thus we got closer towards the end. I will return soon to spend more time with them and to film more content from Vietnam for you guys!
