【糟！糟！全面糟！CHEAT 的用法要小心。】
最近一個調皮的學生說，他跟媽媽說會用電腦寫功課，但其實去玩電動：
X I cheated on my mom.
再糟不過！這句糟在哪裡呢？

他好像以為 cheat on 是「騙」的意思。但是兩個字 cheat on 的意思是「有外遇而背叛情人」。
所以，如果說 I cheated on my mom, 意思是 (1) 媽媽是他的女朋友，然後 (2) 他還去搞外遇！！！
這樣說不行！
cheat on的正確的用法是這樣：
He cheated on his wife. But he got caught and now they’re divorced.
(他背著老婆偷吃被抓到，所以離婚了。)
If my boyfriend cheats on me, it’s over!
(如果我男友偷吃，我們之間就完了！)

一個字、沒有 “on” 的用法 cheat 就是「騙」的意思。
不過，cheat 通常表示比較嚴重的騙，常指犯罪：
That businessman cheats his customers. I hope he gets caught!
(那個商人會騙客人的錢。我希望他被抓到！）
A con artist cheated me out of fifty dollars at the train station. I guess I learned my lesson.
(火車站一個騙子騙了我的50塊，而我學到了一個教訓。）
不過，我們原來的案子，同學只是偷偷打電動，不是很嚴重。因此，用 cheat 可能太嚴重了。我們可能要考慮...

★ trick /trɪk/ 也是騙的意思，但會常用在比較「輕」的案子。那，我們的「例錯」，我覺得這樣就可以了：
√ I tricked my mom.
這樣就可以了。
Play a trick on 就是玩惡作劇的意思，也很有用：
We played a trick on our classmate. We hid her smartphone. After she started going crazy, we told her what we did!
(我們惡搞同學，把她的智慧型手機藏起來，等到她快抓狂時才告訴她是我們幹的！)
