Is Really Something at Chinatown Complex Food Centre indeed really something? The owner, a true-blue Taiwanese in his mid-30s from Chiayi province, manned everything from ordering, frying, serving to cashiering.
We got the regular signature Braised Pork Rice which came with a mound of pearl rice, braised pork belly strips, a hard boiled egg and giam chye (salt-pickled mustard greens). Although the braised pork belly at didn’t have my expected melty texture, the outstanding lor (braising liquid) was both savory and sweet.

Fatty Ox HK Kitchen is most famous for its Beef Brisket and Tendon Noodles. The tender and flavourful brisket, which is normally a tougher cut of beef, was stewed for many hours until it was super tender. The braising sauce was thick and luscious, with a deep, savoury flavour which complemented the egg noodles perfectly. The beef tendon was soft and melted in my mouth.
Its rendition of soya sauce chicken is also definitely worth a try! What sets it apart is its liberal application of a chopped ginger and spring onion sauce, which is insanely aromatic and tasty. With Fatty Ox HK Kitchen serving up such high quality dishes, you don’t have to pay restaurant prices for classic Cantonese fare.

It’s not every day that you chance upon affordable duck confit in a hawker centre — in fact, Eddy’s just might be the first.
With over ten years of experience under his belt, Chef Eddy Wan decided that he wanted to share his labour of love with the people of Singapore. And thus, Eddy’s was born.
The signature Duck Confit has been such a big hit that it gets sold out almost everyday or as Eddy likes to say, “my ducks always run very fast”. Professed to be made with love, the ducks are marinated overnight for 24 hours and seasoned well before they are cooked for at least 14-16 hours.

I am a huge fan of fish soup. One of my favourites is Mr Fish.
Allan, who used to work as an IT specialist, now runs the stall full-time with his mother. He grew up in Chinatown and really miss the street-side stalls along Terengganu Street where no milk is added into fish head bee hoon. Hence, Mr Fish was born. Think Fish Soup, Black Bean Sliced Fish Hor Fun, Braised Bittergourd and Sliced Fish etc.
The fish bones are boiled for hours to achieve that silky texture that the tasty soup possesses. The process is time-consuming but they insist on not cutting corners – no milk is added. It takes just one sip of the soup to know that it’s worth the wait.
Another highlight for me is the black bean Hor Fun with Sliced Fish. The distinct wok hei taste of the hor fun, coupled with the robust gravy make each mouthful very satisfying.
