#dish跟plate在英國是不同東西
🇺🇸美國生活諺語:dish篇🍽
1⃣ a dish (though it's a bit old-fashioned)
2⃣ Revenge is a dish best served cold
3⃣ dish it out; sb. can dish it out, but not take it
4⃣ dish the dirt (on); dish on
--
When we say “wash the dishes,” we mean all the tableware, and even the silverware. But in English, whereas plates are usually used to eat from, dishes, which are flatter than bowls, and not as flat as plates (and sometimes have lids), are used to serve or cook food. And a dish can also refer to the food that is served in the dish. Now let’s learn some other dish-related idioms!
我們知道 wash the dishes「洗碗」是泛指洗所有的餐具,即使是銀製餐具也算在內。但是在英國,plate跟dish則是兩種不同的東西,plate 是進餐時用的淺盤,而 dish 則是比碗淺但比 plate 深的深盤(有時還附蓋子),通常是裝盛菜餚出餐或烹煮食物用。dish 也可以指該道菜。說完了,接下來就來介紹跟 dish 一字有關的諺語吧。
You know that a serving of food can be called a dish, but what if you 1⃣call a person a dish? It means they’re sexy and attractive. This expression, which sounds a little old-fashioned these days, likely has it’s origins in comparing a person to a delicious dish of food. Ex: Wow, she’s gorgeous—what a dish!
你知道一道菜可以用 a dish 稱之,但你叫一個人a dish又是怎麼回事?其實是說那個人性感吸引力十足,「是你的菜」。儘管這個表達放在現在已經有點過時,就跟拿一道菜來比喻一個人一樣過氣。如:Wow, she’s gorgeous—what a dish!(哇,那個妹有夠正的──是天菜。)
Besides food, what else can be served on dishes? Revenge! Have you ever heard the proverb, 2⃣“Revenge is a dish best served cold”? It means that revenge is most satisfying when one takes the time to plan it carefully and carry it out when your enemy least suspects it, rather than immediately after one is wronged. This expression has existed for hundreds of years, but it was made popular when it appeared in the 1982 movie, Star Trek II, the Wrath of Khan. Ex: A: How can you let him get away with treating you like that? B: I won’t, but revenge is a dish best served cold.
除了食物,還有什麼可以裝在盤子上?仇恨!你有聽過俗語「君子報仇三年不晚」(Revenge is a dish best served cold)嗎?指與其立即復仇,花時間慢慢計畫再實行,讓敵人放下戒心之後再復仇,這樣會更令人滿足。1982年電影《星艦迷航記2: 星戰大怒吼》讓這個存在已經好幾百年的老俗語再次流行起來。如:A: How can you let him get away with treating you like that? 你怎麼能忍受他這樣對待你? B: I won’t, but revenge is a dish best served cold. 我不會繼續忍下去的,但是君子報仇三年不晚。
As a verb, dish means “to serve,” and is the basis of a number of expressions. To 3⃣“dish it out” means to criticize or insult, and is often used in the idiom, “sb. can dish it out, but not take it,” which is used to describe people who are quick to criticize others, but can’t take criticism themselves. Ex: A: I didn’t realize that Karen was so thin-skinned. B: Yeah. She can dish it out, but she can’t take it.
dish當動詞指「上菜」,也延伸出好幾種諺語用法。dish it out指「批評,侮辱」,常出現在sb. can dish it out, but not take it.這個諺語中,指「愛批評他人卻批評不得的人」。如:A: I didn’t realize that Karen was so thin-skinned. 我不明白為什麼凱倫會這麼膚淺。B: Yeah. She can dish it out, but she can’t take it.是啊,她愛批評別人,但見不得別人批評她。
Another idiom with dish as a verb is 4⃣“dish the dirt (on),” which means to gossip about someone or something. Ex: Let’s sit down, have a drink and dish the dirt. The expression “dish on” also has the same meaning. Ex: Why are you always dishing on Patricia?
另一個dish當動詞的諺語是dish the dirt on,指「八卦某事或某人」。如Let’s sit down, have a drink and dish the dirt.(咱們坐下來喝杯茶聊八卦吧。)也可以用dish on表示:Why are you always dishing on Patricia?(為什麼你總是在八卦派翠西亞?)

If you’re a fan of American football, you’re sure to be familiar with the Washington Redskins. Since joining the NFL in the early 1930s, the Redskins have won two NFL Championships and three Super Bowls. Only five teams have appeared in more Super Bowls than the Redskins—the New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers.
如果你是美式足球迷,想必對華盛頓紅皮隊不陌生。從1930年代初期加入美國職業美式足球聯盟NFL以來,紅皮隊已經拿下兩次NFL冠軍以及三次超級盃冠軍。目前只有五個球隊出現在超級盃的次數能超過紅皮隊──新英格蘭愛國者隊、達拉斯牛仔隊、匹茲堡鋼人隊、丹佛野馬隊,以及舊金山49人隊。
In recent years, however, the Redskins have come under increasing criticism. Although the Redskins’ last Super Bowl appearance was in 1992, this criticism isn’t about their performance on the field, but rather their name.
不過最近幾年,紅皮隊卻受到越來越多的批評聲浪。即使紅皮隊最近一次現身在超級盃已經是1992年的事情了,不過這個批評其實跟他們球場上的表現無關,而是跟他們的隊名有關。
Where does the term “redskin” come from? In the 18th century, French settlers in the Mississippi River Valley translated a word used by local Indians to refer to themselves into peau rouge. This was later translated into English as redskin, a term that was used for many years with no negative meaning, even by Indians themselves. But during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, American Indian activists began to feel that words like redskin promoted negative stereotypes about Native Americans.
「紅皮膚redskin」這個詞是怎麼來的?十八世紀移居到密西西比河流域的法國人,將當地印地安人用來自稱的字翻成peau rouge,這個法文詞後來翻成英文redskin「紅皮膚」,當時這個字並沒有任何負面含意,也這樣相安無事用了許多年,連印地安人自己也在用。不過,到一九六〇年代人權運動時期,美國印第安社運人士開始覺得,這個字會引起大家對美國原住民的負面刻板印象。
Today, most dictionaries define redskin as an offensive term, but it’s not that simple. A number of polls have shown that the majority of football fans, the general public, and even American Indians, don’t find the word redskin offensive. And Redskins owner Dan Snyder has said the name was chosen back in 1933 to honor Native Americans, including the head coach—who was part Sioux—and four of the team’s players.
如今,多數字典都將redskin這個字定義成歧視字眼,不過事情可沒這麼簡單。一連串針對美式足球觀眾、一般大眾、甚至對美國印地安人所做的民意調查顯示,他們並不覺得redskin這個字有歧視意味。而紅皮隊老闆丹施耐德也說了,這個隊名是他們在1933年為了表彰隊上的美國原住民隊員而選定的,包含身為蘇族的總教練以及其4名球員。
But following the police killing of George Floyd, a group of investors wrote letters to Redskins sponsors like FedEx, Nike and PepsiCo urging them to put pressure on the team to change its name. On July 2, FedEx publically called on the team to change its name, and Nike removed all Redskins merchandise from its website. The next day, the team announced that it would be reviewing its name, and on July 13 made an official statement that they would retire the Redskins name and logo.
然而,發生佛洛依德之死事件之後,一群投資人寫信給FedEx、Nike、百事可樂等紅皮隊的贊助商,希望他們對紅皮隊施加壓力更改隊名。7月2日,FedEx公開呼籲紅皮隊改名,Nike則是撤下官網上所有有紅皮隊隊徽的產品。隔日紅皮隊宣布會審慎檢討隊名,並在7月13日做出官方說明,表示他們會讓紅皮隊這個名字與隊徽走入歷史。

1) Big thing(大事なこと)
=================================
Big thingは直訳すると、「大きな物」になりますが、日常会話では「大事なこと」もしくは「とても人気があるもの」という意味で使われます。大きなことを達成したり、人生において大事な出来事であったり、または大流行している物事を指して使います。
✔ちなみに、次に流行るものや次なる目玉はthe next big thingのように表現します。
<例文>

What do you think is going to be the next big thing?
(次のブームは何だと思いますか?)
=================================
2) Injury (けが・負傷)
=================================
Injury は「けが」や「負傷」を意味します。「けがをする」はhave an injury、「ひざを負傷している」はhave a knee injuryのように have と組み合わせてよく使われます。
✔その他、動詞のinjureを使ってget injured(けがをする)や、injure one’s leg(足を痛める)のように表現することも一般的です。Hurtと同じ意味ですが、よりフォーマルな響きがあります。
<例文>
He has a knee injury and he will be out for a few weeks.
(彼はひざを負傷したので数週間、試合に出られません。)
How did you get injured?
(どうやってケガしたんですか?)
I injured my wrist playing basketball.
(バスケをして手首を痛めました。)
=================================
3) As far as ____ goes (〜に関しては)
=================================
As far as ____ goes は「〜に関しては」や「〜に関して言えば」という意味のフレーズです。In regards to ____ や as for ____ と同じ意味を持ちますが、より口語的な響きがあります。例えば、「スポーツに関して言うとテニスが好きです。」は「As far as sports go, I like tennis.」と言います。
<例文>
As far as price goes, that store is the cheapest.

=================================
4) Cover one’s ears(耳を塞ぐ)
=================================
Cover one’s ears
<例文>
It's going to be really loud. Cover your ears.
(すごくうるさいから、耳を塞いだ方がいいよ。)
He shuts his ears to all criticism.
(彼はあらゆる批判に対して耳を傾けない。)
I’m covering my ears and I can still hear it.
(耳を塞いでいるけど、まだ聞こえる。)
=================================
5) Look to(〜を当てにする)
=================================
Look toは、「〜の方を向く」を意味することから、日常会話では「〜をあてにする」や「〜を頼る」を意味します。Rely onと同じ意味ですが、 look toは物に頼るのではなく、人を当てにしたり、誰かにアドバイスを求めたりする状況で使われるのが一般的です。今日の会話では実際に「〜を見る」の意味で使われています。
<例文>
Who do you look to for advice these days?
(近頃は誰のアドバイスを頼りにしてるの?)
I always look to my parents for advice.
(アドバイスが必要な時は両親を頼ります。)

網友K問:
字母Z幾時都讀Z音(例如 zebra,zoo),一看就知怎樣讀。但字母S有時讀S(assign),有時讀Z(design)。
