For those who don’t speak Chinese - this episode we were discussing 台語 which is a language called Taiwanese (or Hokkien) It is a dialect of Chinese spoken in Taiwan primarily by older generations and more commonly in the south of the island. Younger generations are not used to using it, and mostly use it to communicate with their families. Younger people are also better at listening than in speaking themselves, but that does not mean there are no people out there proficient in that language. As a language itself it has no writing system although most of it could be written down more or less with standard Chinese characters. This language is also handed down only by speaking, therefore with each year the number of users shrinks.

For those who asked me: if you speak mandarin there is only a slim chance that you could understand Taiwanese. It is based on chinese, but believe me it is whole different language. Only if it comes to very basic words or characters those two languages share similar pronunciations

I am super happy we could learn some of it during the episode and I wish my Taiwanese was better😂 otherwise I am still happy about being able to use Mandarin Chinese with all my Taiwanese friends and also during the show❤️
