Reilly (@hey_reilly) is a multimedia artist, whose Instagram features a mix of digital collages, mosaics, and videos. Scrolling through his feed is a dizzying experience: it’s one long feed of ideas that jump from point to point, a visual path of themes and histories; jokes like Disney gone bizarro and exhortations to seriously breathe breathe, SHUT IT DOWN. Riffing off pop culture—from Teletubbies to Psycho and everything in between—Reilly crafts mesmerizing, pixelated, dizzyingly fun Internet art, subverting our familiar language of brands and symbols to make something cheeky and new. His Instagram constantly pushes at the boundaries of what the platform can do, whether it’s a giant mosaic of digital collage that features, inexplicably, singing muppets in one corner, or a series of videos of Simpsons characters with asteroid collisions for hair. In his #GucciGram remix, Reilly takes two approaches: the first video features a kaleidoscopic patterning of the #GGBlooms print, spinning it into something hypnotic, trippy, and new. The second video is made with the characteristic digital collage technique that has made Reilly famous, splicing together the Gucci #GGCaleido pattern with art historical referents and, tenderly, embedded in the image, a video of human touch, hand stroking abdomen, making the faraway feel close and tactile.
