Tribute to Almarhum Dr Husin Hamid Hassan

This fatherly great scholar has passed away. He was born in Egypt but grew up as a global citizen. His noted signature underlying the fatwas of so many Islamic financial products has been a common feature in Islamic finance.

I met with him for the first time while presenting my paper on Financing Intellectual Property (in Arabic) at Dallah Barakah seminar in Mekah in Ramadhan (around 1997). He said to me "Dr Mohammad, you are courageous enough to write on this". I later joined the AAOIFI being the youngest scholar in 2000. He was the prominent member in AAOIFI. I have learnt a lot from him during AAOIFI intensive series of meeting.

Then I worked with him officially through Dar al-Istithmar's Shariah Board in Oxford, UK (2005-2010).

I enjoyed reading all his articles & books .

He was so active in many things. Shariah advisory. Talks. Articles. Fatwas.

He also innovated many new things in Islamic finance.

Two things that I am intrigued to share about him.

He told me that he took two courses concurrently while doing his first degree. He did Shariah and Law. He got stuck because some of the exams were clashing.

"I sat for 40 minutes for my Shariah exam and I rode my motorcyle for 30 minutes to sit for my law paper for the last 40 minutes. With the grace of Allah, I passed with distintion". For me, he is the legend of intensity.

Another episode of life worth tellling happened in Mecca in 1998. After Zohor prayer, I stopped at one of the local restaurants alongside the crowded streets (i.e.sha'biyyah). While I was eating the beriyani, this great scholar came in & sat down at one of the tables together with many other ordinary people. He ate what others were having. He is a personality of humility.

Can we find the replacement of him? We may find someone of his credential but we might not find someone of his character & personality.

I always consider him as the father, mentor, colleague & inspirator.

May Allah bless his soul & forgive all his sins. May we be gathered again in the Paradise.

看到Christopher Chen附在獨立觀察的連結，披露日本記者黑木亮著手調查東京知事小池百合子的埃及開羅大學學歴史，所以整理了文章一半的中英對照如下，另外一半預期周末整理好再另外貼新版。

大家可以比較東京知事和她的大貴人(埃及前副首相Dr Hatem)如何促使她主張她1976年確從埃及開羅大學畢業的做法。台灣媒體不敢報導此日本疑似假學歷的新聞，倒是刷了很多東京知事抗疫好棒棒的中文報導－想必是要洗嬰粉的腦「會做事就好了，學歷有什麼重要」哈哈😄⋯⋯

🔥偽造大學學位的指控困擾東京都知事小池百合子（Vol.4）
Allegations of fake university degree haunt Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike (vol.4)

💥自從現任東京都知事小池百合子（Yuriko Koike）於1992年成為國會議員以來，一直有謠言流傳稱，小池百合子（Koike）文飾美化她的學歷。
Ever since the incumbent Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike became a Member of Parliament in 1992, rumors have been circulating that Koike embellished her academic credentials.

小池聲稱自己曾自開羅大學畢業，但是如果以阿拉伯語為母語的人去聽她的阿拉伯語，那麼她公開身為開羅大學畢業生的學歷，似乎就顯得更加可疑了。
Koike claims to have graduated from Cairo University but if an Arabic speaker listens to her Arabic, her published academic credentials as a Cairo University graduate seems more than dubious.

There are strong evidence about her fake academic credentials such as testimony by the flatmate supported by documentary evidence, Koike's self-contradictory statement in her book to have graduated in four years despite failing her first year, her rudimentary Arabic, her lie about the graduation thesis and her stubbornness in refusing to submit her graduation documents to the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly.

Feeling a sense of duty as someone who learnt Arabic and graduated from an Egyptian university (MA, Middle East Studies from the American University in Cairo), I decided to investigate the allegations. After two years of investigation, I could not find any evidence, nor even the slightest hint that Koike graduated from Cairo University.

Koike claims in her books and other places that she entered Cairo University as a first year student (freshman) in October 1972.

However, in the ""Fake CV"" the flatmate says, ""Koike entered Cairo University in October 1973 as a second year student.

Koike happily told me ‘My father asked Dr. Hatem, then Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and Information, to swap my few months at Kwansei Gakuin University, a private university in Hyogo prefecture, and a few months at the language course at the American University in Cairo for the first year at Cairo University. ‘

This is apparently written in the flatmate’s letter to her mother in Japan dated 19 November 1972. According to the ""Fake CV"" most of her letters were dated and postmarked. If so, they will be admissible to court."

In the ""Fake CV"" another Japanese woman who was attending another university in Egypt at the time says she was surprised that Koike had transferred in the second year at Cairo University. Another Japanese graduate of Cairo University whom I interviewed also remembered that Koike had transferred to the second year."

However, strict rules are in place to transfer to Egypt's state universities, including Cairo University. In order to transfer, a student must have earned credits at another university with the same or similar content and number of hours as the Egyptian state university’s curriculum and must have earned a certain number of grades. This was confirmed to me by the Central Transfers Office of Cairo University.

例如，在2016-17學年，如果學生希望：

In the case of the 2016-17 academic year, for example, students are required to have at least imtiyaaz (excellent) grade from other university if the student wishes to transfer to the Faculty of Engineering or Medicine and at least jaiid jiddan (very good) grade in the case of faculties of practical study and at least jaiid (good) grade for those of theoretical study.

The aforementioned journalist Dalia Shibel told me that ""In Egypt state universities and private universities are two completely different systems. Even if you study at the American University in Cairo for 10 years obtaining necessary credits, you have to start as a first year student in Cairo University. This is the law of our country"". Therefore it is totally impossible that a person like Koike who has not finished a year at another university (and has not earned any credits) would be allowed to transfer."

Koike only attended Kwansei Gakuin University for several months at most. CASA at the American University in Cairo where she learnt Arabic is just a language school and does not offer any credits or degrees. If, as some Japanese people point out, Koike actually transferred to the second year at Cairo University in 1973, that is nothing but a fraudulent transfer. That means she was not eligible for graduation from the beginning.

As Koike does not appear to have fulfilled the requirements for transferring to a state university in Egypt, I sent a letter to Koike, to ask whether she was admitted in 1972 or 1973 but received no response (the full text of my questions to and response from Koike will appear later in this report).

In the 2020 edition of the QS World University Rankings published by Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd. in the United Kingdom, Cairo University ranks 521-530 in the world and second in Egypt, on par with Kumamoto University and Nagasaki University in Japan. The best university in Egypt is the American University in Cairo (private and American-accredit university) which ranks 395th in the world (tied with Kobe University in Japan). Third place in Egypt are Ain Shams University, Alexandria University, and Assiut University (all state universities) which rank 801-1000th in the world.

It is remarkable for an Egyptian Deputy Prime Minister to visit Japan accompanied by 6 media reporters and that clearly shows Dr. Hatem’s power. It also shows how important he thinks this visit is."""

The Arabic-language biography of Hatem “The Diary of Abdel-Kader Hatem - Head of the October War Government"" published in Cairo in 2016 (written by an Egyptian journalist Ibrahim Abdel Aziz) states that Hatem had been on good terms with Yasuhiro Nakasone, former Prime Minister of Japan, since 1954 and that Nakasone introduced Yuriko Koike to him, a student at that time, as the daughter of his friend. On 6 October 1973, the October War (Yom Kippur War) broke out in Egypt. Egyptian and Syrian forces launched an attack on Israeli forces deployed in the Suez Canal and Golan Heights in an attempt to recapture territory occupied by Israel in the Six Day War (June War) in 1967.

Then saya baru berumur 20 tahun , saya memberanikan diri call mak saya cakap saya nak kahwin dengan orang Russia , dia nak convert ke Islam di Malaysia , My mom ni jenis , “ asalkan you tahu tanggungjawab , and boleh bagi nafkah dan kasih saying , okay boleh “ , so bila balik dari Russia , time tu pun tengah cuti sem ,saya pun kawin lah ! hehehe kawin muda ni banyak cabaran dia , lagi la dengan BANGSA LAIN , CULTURE LAIN , BAHASA PUN LAIN , so kinda hard , sebab orang Russia ni memang tak banyak tahu English , so saya kena communicate in Russian language . Lepas dah kahwin , mak saya pun kata , “ man mummy nak tutup lah spa mummy tu , takde sales , takde feedback apa apa , staff pun takde .“ , saya SEBAK meleleh air mata , sebab spa tu lah yang tanggung kami 4 beradik tanpa bapa 17 tahun . saya pun terus cakap kat mak “ mummy takpe , in shaa allah man boleh tolong mummy “ so mak pun bagi chance saya cuba naik kan , tapi macam Doc cakap , Saya ni hangat hangat taik ayam , tak pernah ada pegalaman dalam bidang business ni tapi acah macam tau , komited tu dah ada , tapi ilmu takde.

Jadi saya pun komited untuk pergi ke Nak Ubah Hidup , walau takde duit , walau kena tanggung isteri lagi , kena ni la tu la , bila saya pergi Nak Ubah Hidup banyak benda saya belajar , semuanya tak Berjaya sebab ada EGO , so saya cuba buang dan implement benda yang Doc ajar time Nak Ubah Hidup ! Alhamdulillah lepas Nak Ubah Hidup , Sales saya dari 800 sebulan ( yang takcukup nak bayar sewa kedai pun , tak cukup nak bayar gaji pekerja seorang pun , bil elektrik pun tak lepas ) ke 25k Sebulan . Alhamdulillah , berkat doa ramai ramai malam tu dan ilmu yang Doc bagi .

So , Nama business spa keluarga saya adalah Kapas Beauty Spa , ditubuhkan pada 2002 oleh ibu saya Noratul Hairani , Basically Kapas Beauty Spa hanya memulakan menyediakan perkhidmatan salon rambut dari 2002 – 2007 , di sekitar perumahan , atas restoran mamak .

Pada pertengahan 2007 , Kapas Beauty Spa berpindah ke tempat yang lebih strategik dan mempunyai 2 tingkat , darippada hanya salon rambut , Kapas Beauty Spa menambahkan servis body spa , urut , facial , rawatan resdung , bekam , waxing , infrared & herbal steam sauna. Kapas Beauty Spa mendapat sambutan yang meriah dari pertengahan 2007 – 2013 , kerana Kapas Beauty Spa menyediakan servis image consultant & juga Kapas Beauty Spa menyediakan class intensif mengurut dan facial . Pada 2013 , Kapas Beauty Spa mula menurun dan menurun , kerana masalah dalaman , seperti tiada staff , tiada konsistensi dan tiada semangat . Sales dari 50k sebulan menurun ke 30k , ke 20k , dan kebawah . so dari 2 tingkat spa , Kapas Beauty Spa menjadi 1 tingkat kerana ingin mengurangkan kos . Jadi bermula dari situ lah Kapas Beauty Spa kurang mendapat sambutan . dari 20k menurun dan menurun .

Jadi , ada satu tahap ibu saya pun hampir give up kerana sales tak membawa keuntunggan langsung .

Alhamdulillah Ibu saya memberi peluang untuk saya dan wife cuba untuk naikkan Kapas Beauty Spa ini , Selepas pergi ke Program NAK UBAH HIDUP , spa kami sudah mula mendapat sambutan yang lebih meriah . Terima Kasih Dr. Azizan Osman kerana banyak menolong saya MEMBUKA MATA YANG ILMU ITU ADALAH PENTING !

[WHERE ARE THE ASIAN BORDERS? (PART 2: EUROPE)]

Asia is the largest and most populous continent in the world. From the physical extremes to the cultural, it's a continent that has shown tremendous diversity from one end to the other.

But what exactly counts as Asia? Where are the Asian borders?

This video is part two of a three part series.

In part one, we covered the specific Asian borders following the coastal regions from the Tumen River between North Korea & Russia to the Suez Canal in Egypt.

In between, we went over Japan's Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands, the Malay Archipelago, Indonesia's border with Papua New Guinea, the Wallace Line, the Weber Line, Asian continental shelf, the Middle East, Yemen's Socotra Archipelago, Afro-Eurasia and Egypt's border.

In part two, we cover the most controversial Asian border section of Europe starting from Egypt, through Lebanon, Syria, Cyprus, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia. We end on the eastern side of Russia (Siberia) bordering North America, which is where part three will commence.

Many feel Asian and Europe shouldn't have been separate continents to start with, as there isn't a clear physical geographical divide between the two. In fact, a few countries teach the continent of Eurasia as a result. This made this video particularly challenging as nothing is definitive and is all open to interpretation.
