What will occur to you when you hear the term PhD? In response, many people say: “being a PhD candidate must be a tough job.” Sure, it is not an easy job. Then, how about pursuing a doctoral degree as an international student? Actually, it is quite another story. Culture shock comes along when attitudes, habits, ethnic character, climate, food, and even opening hours of stores are different. Also, you will have to handle issues such as writing in your second language, adapting to different accents of the lecturers, getting involved in networking, mental health, and financial support. Each of these situations you will encounter will be elaborated here.

《海底怪蟲與閹夫奇案》

早前看英國諧星Karl Pilkington在Facebook拍片宣傳新劇，網友問他最喜歡那種昆蟲，他回答是「博比特蟲」（Bobbit worm）。枉我自稱蟲迷，我也是第一次聽到這種生物。

在YouTube搜尋一下，原來它生活於深海海底，體長可以長達數米，但身體大部份藏於沙中，只將鋒利鋸狀口部與觸鬚外露。雖然它沒有腦袋，但當有魚或章魚等生物游過上方，它能迅速彈起咬住獵物，注射毒液癱瘓目標，拖進沙穴中享用大餐。

看維基介紹，我卻發現一個矛盾。博比特蟲學名是Eunice aphroditois，但花名博比特蟲又從何而來？中文維基指名字來自水底攝影師約翰博比特（John Bobbitt），英文維基卻提及一宗發生在九十年代美國的閹夫奇案。

1993年6月23日，約翰博比特在睡夢中，被妻子洛蓮娜（Lorena）以廚房刀切去陽具，完全「連根拔起」。洛蓮娜拿著陽具，駕車到附近的農田，將陽具拋進田中。她其後報警自首，經過大規模搜索，終於找回陽具。醫生花九個半小時，將陽具駁回約翰身上，可惜已經影響功能。

洛蓮娜被捕當晚，向警方表示：「他經常可以高潮，永遠不等我有高潮就完事。他很自私。」她亦指控約翰強姦，但法庭判決罪名不成立。

博比特蟲……是的，現在說回海底怪蟲，據稱因為利刀般的嘴巴，令人聯想到切陽具，才以這個不幸男子命名。博比特從來不是水底攝影師，中文資料怎樣出錯？

我做了一個調查，發現當初翻譯出錯的源頭。一篇英文原文是這樣寫：「The bobbit worm may or may not be named after John Bobbitt, whose misadventures won’t be elaborated on here. The story goes that an underwater photographer saw the worm’s powers of … amputation as being analogous to those of John’s wife Lorena. But according to Anja Schulze, a marine biologist at Texas A&M University at Galveston, the origin of the name is far from clear.」譯者誤以為「John Bobbitt」就是下一句提到的「underwater photographer」，其實根本不是指同一個人。

因此大陸互動百科將這段錯譯為：「其名称可能是以水下摄影师约翰·博比特（John Bobbitt）的名字命名的，他曾亲眼看见这种虫子能够将大型猎物截肢。但海洋生物学家安雅·舒尔茨（Anja Schulze）却认为博比特虫名字的起源仍不清楚。」

而中文維基將這段再簡化，就變成：「二十年前，一名水下攝影師無意捕捉到了它的存在，並以攝影師的名字命名：博比特蟲。」

網上百科開放了知識的大門，不過華文版本的資料，不但不及英文版本詳盡，亦往往出錯，奉勸各位要小心查證。
