Reasons why I love being a songwriter:

Music truly is a universal language.

When I released 'Siboh Kitak Nangis' (meaning Don't You Cry) on my 2nd album 'Ghostbird', I was faced with many doubtful questions from Malaysians (I don't need to tell you which part Msia these Q's came from), who asked me things like, "Wahhh~ berani eh you letak lagu Sarawak dalam album you?" and "So is this a way to prove you're more Malaysian?" (Whut, bro?) I thought to myself, this was just a song I wrote about comforting yourself, or others, and telling them that every hardship shall pass, chin up, don't worry, I'll be by your side if you need me, come rain, thunder or lightning, I will be with you... BUT it just so happens to be in my native dialect of Bahasa Sarawak.

I remember hearing praises about it from my record label and particularly my producer Mario Caldato (Mario C) and how excited they were to be hearing this beautiful language, and their faith in the song made my heart melt.

When the song finally released, and hearing those things from my fellow countrymen shocked me to the core.

Of course, not everyone thought like that... Members of the media were very kind and I have been told that the song went on to inspire many more artistes and Sarawakian artistes to embrace our culture and language... Which to me, meant that that was my job as a songwriter done. 'Siboh Kitak Nangis' then went on to be become the first Bahasa Sarawak song on an international album, on rotation on NPR radio stations in the US and was also featured in Korean dramas, and also just like in this video, appreciated by people of different parts of the world who do not even remotely know what it means, just by the sentiments of the song that they're hearing.

My darlings, in music, there is no limit. No one makes the rules. It depends on what you want to achieve and express. Sing the language of your hearts, your souls, and mind not about "making it the market", truth is, someone, somewhere, needs to hear it, and feel like they are loved and not alone.❤️ On that note: OOHHHAAAAA🌺!

Bold means necessitating courage and daring attitude for me. It gives a sense of willingness to act on, speak about, or address something about which we are passionate even if it is out of our comfort zone. To be bold means to be the best version of your true self without regret, to achieve the best possible outcome of your deeds without fear and doubt, the courage to do what others won’t step up when others are frozen in fear. This reflects in this - a traditional Indian woman with a twist - BOLD RED LIPSTICK and in a bathtub! It’s time for us to break free from stigmas and stereotypes of how a proper Indian woman should be. We define the meaning of "modesty" and how we choose to show to the world. Our culture is a beautiful thing to be shared with the world with a hint of braveness and a lot of courage to embrace our true selves. •

9月15日至10月15日是「拉美裔傳統月」！本月份我們慶祝拉美裔美國人的文化及貢獻。今天我們邀請到AIT@40活動策劃人Crystal，跟我們分享身為墨西哥裔美國人的傳統和價值觀：

「我的祖先來自墨西哥，但我和表姊妹都於1986年出生於美國德州；我們從小在牧場上長大，身邊圍繞者祖父母和家人的愛與支持。我們的父母非常重視墨西哥的價值觀和文化，因此讓我們從小學習芭蕾舞、踢踏舞、爵士樂和各種才藝課，並鼓勵我們在拉美裔傳統月時，在德州南部的嘉年華、公立學校和養老院表演「墨西哥民俗芭蕾舞」，這種舞蹈是傳統墨西哥舞的統稱，透過芭蕾舞的特色（尖頭鞋、誇大的舞步及精準的舞碼）來呈現墨西哥民族文化。

我的父母在舞蹈和人生中灌輸了我們很好的理念：「達成我們設下的目標、永不放棄堅定的基督教信仰，並尊重年長者及地球。」

他們也教導我們要對人和善、擁抱失敗並重新站起來，並追求能帶來成功及快樂的教育。

由於我的家庭和文化的影響，我目前在美國在台協會工作，而我的表姊妹則是當老師和護士。三個姊妹加起來共有9個小孩，我們會將同樣的傳統傳承給下一代。」#NationalHispanicHeritageMonth

September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates the contributions and culture of Americans of Hispanic heritage. As part of our continuing series, AIT’s own Crystal offers her perspective on how growing up with strong Mexican-American heritage and values led her to become AIT’s @40 Campaign Coordinator.

Though our roots trace back to Mexico, my all-American cousins and I were born in Texas in the summer of 1986. Because of our parent’s’ strong Mexican values and culture, my cousins and I grew up on a ranch with the loving support of family, including my Abuela and Abuelo (Grandma & Grandpa). In addition to ballet, tap, jazz and other extracurriculars, my cousins and I grew up celebrating ‘Hispanic Heritage Month’ by performing ”Baile Folklórico” at festivals, public schools and nursing homes throughout South Texas. “Baile folklórico”, (literally meaning "folkloric dance”) is a collective term for traditional Mexican dances that emphasize local folk culture through ballet characteristics - pointed toes, exaggerated movements, and precise choreography.

Both through dance and in life my parents instilled in me their ideals: to achieve whatever goal I set, to never let go of my strong Christian faith, and to respect the elderly and our planet.

My parents and grandparents showed me that kindness always matters and to embrace failure when encountering it before getting right back up again. One of their most significant and on-going life lessons was to pursue an education that would not only bring me success, but most importantly, happiness.

Because of the influence of my family and culture, I now work for the American Institute in Taiwan, while one of my cousins works as a teacher and the other as a nurse. With nine children among the three of us, we will pass on the same traditions that have guided our families to the next generation and beyond.”

「封景．志異-臺南市美術館典藏主題展」精選60件本館典藏作品，分成兩個階段展出，將藝術家創作視為一種當代的志異實踐，一種探知世界、考掘社會文化、提陳徵候異樣、檢視物我關係的媒介，依展間區分成「人間」、「神境」、「自然」三個子題，訴說這些典藏風景，從覺知及揭露政治社會和日常生活中的闇影，藉由入景形見，指認出猶待感應和思忖的所在；或者深入民俗場域，呈現眾生與神交陪、祈求顯靈保佑的精神表現和影像歷史；再到移情入景、重返自然，為心靈找到安適棲居的歸處；再再點示出，人不斷經由掌握自我與周遭環境之牽涉，追問本身的存在如何與世界彼此相容相攝，採取適當回應或介入，進而開啟其經心所願的向度和形廓。另則，選件的題材紛陳，亦增添了風景圖像的意義、開擴了風景再現系統的邊界。



on view in this exhibition are 60 artworks selected from the collection of the Tainan Art Museum, with the artworks presented in two stages. The exhibition sees the artists’ practices as contemporary records of anomalies, which act as mediums for exploring the world, excavating social culture, proposing signs of irregularities, and examining the self-other relationship. The exhibition is divided into the following three sub-categories: “Mortal World”, “Mystic Realm”, and “Nature”, showing how these selected landscape artworks from the collection have evolved from a state of being aware to exposing the dark sides of politics, society, and also in everyday ordinary life, and then by immersing in the scenes and allowing them to manifest, they also point out places that still await to be experienced and contemplated. Some of the artworks have gone deep into places of folklore, showing historical images of people’s interactions with deities and their spiritual behaviors of praying for divine protection. Emotions are also transferred into the landscapes depicted, with a secure sense of spiritual belonging sought after by returning to the embrace of nature. These artworks suggest that through self-awareness and involvement with our surrounding environment, people are constantly questioning our own existence and our relationship with the world, with suitable responses or interferences conducted to open up dimensions or contours that we envision inside. Additionally, the themes presented by the selected artworks are diverse and different; they enhance the meaning embodied by images of landscape and push the boundary of landscape representation.
