[English Club HEC] LÀM CHỦ KĨ NĂNG LISTENING - TỪ 0 - 9.0

Mình sẽ chia sẻ cụ thể hành trình từ 0 đến 9.0 IELTS listening của mình, cả lúc bắt đầu học và lúc ôn thi IELTS nhé.

Kĩ năng listening và reading là 2 kĩ năng mọi người có thể hoàn toàn tự học, và thực sự là nên tự học chứ chả có thầy cô nào hay ai đó giúp mình khá lên nhanh 2 kĩ năng này trong thời gian ngắn. Mặc dù mình cũng sẽ học được các “tips” để đi thi đạt điểm cao hơn, tuy nhiên muốn điểm cao thì 2 kĩ năng này thì mọi người vẫn phải học thật chất và kiên trì thôi 😊

Nhắc lại background của mình 5 năm trước (năm thứ 2 đại học Y) là "con số 0 gần tròn trĩnh” và với kỹ năng nghe thì là “tròn trĩnh thật sự”, đơn giản tại vì trước đó khi còn là học sinh thì mình chả nghe tí gì Tiếng anh cả 😊, trên lớp thì có học mỗi ngữ pháp và từ vựng và học trước thì quên sau, điểm trung bình Tiếng anh thì gần đội sổ ^^. Mình quen nhiều bạn và cũng biết nhiều người, họ cũng đạt 9.0 listening và cảm giác họ giật con điểm đó đơn giản lắm, hỏi ra thì mới biết là họ nghe Tiếng anh từ bé, học trong môi trường Tiếng anh… đa số là có tiếp xúc với môi trường Tiếng anh trên dưới 10 năm. Vậy con số 5 năm của mình, thoạt nhìn tưởng dài nhưng cũng không dài lắm nhỉ 😊. Cho nên các bạn có khởi đầu muộn như mình, (lên đại học hoặc đã đi làm) và cũng không may mắn ở trong môi trường Tiếng anh, thì cũng đừng nản nhé.

Bài viết khá là dài, gồm 2 phần, cho người mới bắt đầu và cho người ôn luyện IELTS nên bạn nào đã có nền nghe tốt rồi có thể lướt xuống dưới nhé. Mình học cũng kinh qua rất nhiều nguồn rồi nhưng đúc rút lại share cho các bạn những nguồn phù hợp nhất thôi để mọi người dễ học, dễ theo và tránh bị loạn.

1/ CHO NGƯỜI MỚI BẮT ĐẦU:
Mình học EFFORTLESS ENGLISH của AJ Hoge và Xem series EXTRA (30 tập). Mình cá với các bạn rằng nếu bạn nào không bắt đầu từ đầu như mình thì khéo không biết 2 thứ này đâu.

Với EFFORTLESS ENGLISH:
Với bộ Effortless English thì free miễn phí trên mạng rất nhiều, bạn có thể down trực tiếp tại đây. Bộ đó có 5 phần tất cả, tuy nhiên theo kinh nghiệm thực tế của mình thì mình thì học bộ Original English (level 1,2,3) và Flow English thôi, các bộ còn lại khá khó cho người mới bắt đầu.

VỀ PHƯƠNG PHÁP: trên Internet có rất nhiều thông tin về cách học cho bộ này. Tuy nhiên với kinh nghiệm bản thân thì mình học như sau:
Một lesson (Ví dụ A kiss) trong bộ Original English (level 1,2,3) sẽ có các phần:
- A Text Article (file PDF): Đọc bài text, không cần phải nghiên cứu. Đừng cố gắng nhớ nó, chỉ đọc một vài lần mỗi ngày và xem lại từ mới. Dùng từ điển tra những từ khó.
- Audio Article (MP3): Chỉ nghe và thư giãn, nghe 1 vài lần mỗi ngày cho đến khi hiểu 100% ngay lập tức và tự động.
- Vocabulary Lesson (file MP3): Chỉ nghe, đừng cố gắng nhớ từ.
- Mini-Story (file MP3): Đây là phần quan trọng nhất. Lần thứ nhất chỉ nghe. Sau đó nghe và ngừng sau mỗi câu hỏi. Trả lời các câu hỏi thật lớn bằng tiếng Anh, sau đó nghe lại. Đừng lo lắng nếu bạn không hiểu gì. Đừng lo lắng về các lỗi.
- Point Of View Mini-Stories
+ Commentaries: Thường mình sẽ bỏ qua phần này. Bạn nào có thời gian thì nghe cũng được ^^

LƯU Ý:
+ Trong lúc nghe Audio và Mini-Story, các bạn hãy cố gắng NHẠI LẠI chính xác (cả về âm, stress lẫn ngữ điệu) của người nói. Đây chính là một trong những cách luyện SHADOWING mình đã áp dụng để luyện phát âm và kĩ năng speaking. Nếu có cơ hội, mình sẽ chia sẻ kỹ hơn.
+ Bộ flow English chỉ có 3 phần: Text, Audio Article và Mini-story, vẫn học giống như ở trên
+ Với những bạn bận rộn như mình, không nhất thiết các bạn phải dành 30 phút – 1 tiếng để tập trung nghe mà hoàn toàn có thể NGHE THỤ ĐỘNG (tức là mình sẽ kết hợp bật Audio luyện nghe
+ SHADOWING trong lúc làm việc khác, ví dụ nấu cơm rửa bát giặt quần áo, đi bộ, đi vệ sinh… 😊, đó chính là cách mà mình làm hàng ngày, và hiện tại vẫn làm – tại nó đã trở thành thói quen.

Mình thích một thứ ở bộ EFFORTLESS là giọng đọc của ông AJ, người sáng lập ra phương pháp học này. Giọng đọc chuẩn Mỹ, rất rõ ràng, đầy năng lượng, và ổng giải thích cũng rất dễ hiểu, dễ nghe (đặc biệt là phần Mini -story, mình cá là các bạn nghe hiểu gần hết).

Với SERIES EXTRA:
Luyện nghe không mãi cũng chán, mình nghĩ xem ít phim sẽ có tính giải trí hơn nên ban đầu mình trọn bộ EXTRA. Series xoay quanh cuộc sống của Nick, Bridget, Hector và Annie. Hector là một người có vốn tiếng Anh rất “khiêm tốn” và khi chuyển từ Agentina đến Anh quốc sống, anh phải tìm những người bạn bản xứ thực thụ để cải thiện khả năng ngoại ngữ của mình.

Chính vì vậy, 3 người bạn cậu ta phải rất vất vả để dạy Hector học tiếng Anh. Ngôn ngữ phim đơn giản, các nhân vật nói khá chậm và nhiều tình huống giao tiếp đơn giản được biên soạn kỹ càng nên rất thích hợp với những người mới bắt đầu học.

Lúc sau khi bắt đầu học Tiếng Pháp thì mình phát hiện ra EXTRA còn có các phiên bản Tiếng Pháp, Đức, Tây Ban Nha… với nội dung y hệt cho các bạn bắt đầu học cơ 😊 Thế mới hay chứ 😊

VỀ PHƯƠNG PHÁP: mình bắt đầu xem bằng song ngữ Anh Việt trước, lúc mới đầu nghe Tiếng anh không hiểu gì. Sau khi mình đã hiểu nội dung và đã quen mặt chữ, mình mới chọn xem phụ đề Tiếng anh, từ nào không biết mình dùng từ điển tra, và sau đó tắt hoặc che phụ đề xem nghe hiểu được bao nhiêu. Lúc ban đầu một tập thì mình xem đâu đó khoảng 5-6 lần 😊, sau đó đến những tập gần cuối thì chỉ cần xem 2-3 lần thôi là nghe được rồi.

App Podcasts:
Ngoài ra mọi người có thể down app LearnEnglish Podcasts về nhé. Mình thấy nguồn này khó hơn một chút tuy nhiên người mới bắt đầu vẫn có thể nghe hiểu được, và rất thích hợp cho việc nghe thụ động.

Giờ là đến phần mình muốn share nhất: XEM PHIM HỌC TIẾNG ANH:

Mình là FAN CUỒNG của các series Truyền hình Mỹ. Series đầu tiên mình xem là “Friends”, và nói thật là mình xem đi xem lại không chán😊, có những episode mình xem đến 7-8 lần. Sau đó mình xem “How I met your mother” và hiện tại đang xem là “The big bang theory”. Mặc dù 9.0 listening nhưng xem vẫn phải tra từ điển xem nhân vật Sheldon nói gì ( tại toàn dùng từ formal độc lạ 😉, kiểu have sex mà bố toàn nói have coitus, cười i*** =))

Mình thấy series truyền hình Mỹ phản ánh khá chân thực đời sống và văn hóa người Mỹ, tình bạn và tình yêu của họ rất phóng khoáng và thoải mái, cởi mở. Các bạn mà có open mindset (như mình ^^) thì sẽ dễ đón nhận hơn và xem thấy hay hơn.

Một điều mình phục ở các series mình xem là các nhân vật diễn quá đỉnh, diễn mà như không diễn (do mình xem phỏng vấn các nhân vật ở ngoài đời thì chả khác quái gì lúc họ diễn cả), đúng là đỉnh cao điện ảnh. Thảo nào mỗi series vài trăm tập mà xem không bị chán. Mình xem và hiểu được các tình huống gây cười của họ thì thấy quá tinh tế, mặc dù xem lại vài lần vẫn thấy buồn cười =))) Sau khi cuồng phim Mỹ thì mình thấy hài Việt như hâm ấy, chắc gu mình thay đổi ^^.

Lúc bắt đầu xem (sau khi đã cày xong Extra) thì mình đúng là choáng toàn tập, họ nói cực nhanh, và mình chả hiểu họ cười gì, vô duyên vãi 😊 Thế nên mình lại áp dụng phương pháp khi xem Extra, kiên trì với từng Episode một. Mình nhớ những tập đầu có khi phải xem đi xem lại gần 5-6 lần mới hiểu được 50-60%, mà còn phải vừa xem vừa đọc sub Eng, chứ không tự nghe không sub được. Cũng nhiều lần mình nản chứ, định bỏ, và có lần bỏ thật (vì áp lực bài vở và ôn thi) mà không hiểu sao sau đó lại tiếp tục. Đúng là nếu không có những phút ban đầu như vậy thì không có mình ngày hôm nay 😊.

Xem trên máy tính thì mọi người cần tải extension Ejoy về, còn trên điện thoại thì có phần mềm Ejoy, khá tiện.

Hiện tại thì mình luyện nghe hàng ngày bằng cách enjoy là chủ yếu thôi, cày phim “The big bang theory” và có theo dõi một số show trên youtube:

+ Về đồ ăn: The best ever food review show ( Kênh review ẩm thực khá nổi tiếng và đặc biệt đa số là toàn món Việt),
+ Về công nghệ ( bản thân mình cực thích công nghệ smartphone): Mrwhosetheboss, Marques Brownlee, Unbox Therapy...
+ Về giải thích những hiện tượng và giả tưởng: Riddle, What if…
+ Những bài học về cuộc sống: Ted talk & The school of life..
+ Các kênh có yếu tố Việt Nam mình rất thích: The IELTS Face-off và Talk Vietnam.
Còn một số nữa nhưng liệt kê thì nhiều quá nên mình chỉ kể vậy thôi. Khi trình nghe mọi người khá rồi thì mọi người hoàn toàn có thể tự chọn lĩnh vực mình yêu thích xong xem và luyện nghe thì sẽ không bao giờ chán 😊.
Cứ kiên trì, dành thời gian một chút là có thành quả nhé. Mình tin là với những bạn bắt đầu, kiên trì luyện nghe, sau 2- 3 tháng là thấy sự khác biệt rõ rệt rồi ^^

2/ HÀNH TRÌNH LUYỆN IELTS 😊
Mình biết đến IELTS lần đầu thì là khoảng gần 3 năm trước, và lúc ban đầu thì thử làm đề listening test 1 Cam 7 được 4.5 (nghe 2 lần) và 5.0 reading (làm trong 3 tiếng !!!), lý do thì có thể là do mình chưa quen format, nhưng mình nghĩ chính là do kỹ năng nghe, đọc mình chưa tốt). Sau đó thì mình cứ luyện đề, kết hợp với việc xem phim và xem youtube thư giãn thôi, rồi cũng dần dần thấy tiến bộ, lên 5-6 rồi cao nhất là 7 thôi (30-31 câu). Sau vài tháng thì mình phải gác lại IELTS (khoảng 1 năm) để tập trung ôn tập tốt nghiệp cho năm cuối cấp.

Sau đó ra trường vài tháng (khoảng tháng 10/ 2019) thì mình mới bắt đầu lại với IELTS thì test thử tụt xuống còn khoảng tầm 6.5 =(((. Mình học IELTS trong lúc đi làm full-time nên thời gian không có nhiều, chỉ tranh thủ được buổi tối và cuối tuần thôi. Mình thì cũng chỉ làm đề và review lại, đặc biệt chú ý đến lỗi sai và cố gắng lần sau không tái phạm :(( ( cố gắng thôi chứ không tránh được). Mình thấy nhiều bạn (và cả bản thân mình đã từng) chăm làm đề lắm nhưng không tiến bộ, hỏi ra thì các bạn chỉ làm đề check đáp án xong để đó, cũng không có luyện nghe từ nhiều nguồn khác. Thế nên mình nghĩ cứ dậm chân tại chỗ là cũng dễ hiểu (bản thân mình có đợt cứ dậm chân tại chỗ ở mức 7.0 listening: 30-32 câu mãi không bứt lên được).

Thế nên kinh nghiệm mình rút ra: Mỗi đề mình làm hãy dành thời gian review nó thật kĩ, nghe lại transcripts xem có từ nào mới không, phân tích tại sao lại sai và phải thật hiểu( đặc biệt các câu multiple choice), cần thiết thì nghe đi nghe lại và đọc transcript và chú ý bắt đúng keys từ file nghe để suy ra đáp án. Đề thi IELTS khá lắt léo và lừa lọc nhiều nên mình thấy phải nghe thật kĩ và thật hiểu mới làm được, và luyện đề một cách thông minh thì mình sẽ thấy sự tiến bộ.

Lần đầu trong năm 2020 mình thi Listening được 7.5 và lần sau được 9.0 thì mình phát hiện điều khác biệt chính là ở những câu Multiple choice đó. Hôm 9.0 thì mình nghe được hết (cả đáp án đúng và đáp án lừa) nên khá chắc chắn về đáp án mình chọn (cơ mà cũng k nghĩ được 9.0 😉, tại đề ở nhà mình làm trước lúc thi toàn tầm 35-36 câu thôi). Sau đó mình phát hiện ra, SỰ TẬP TRUNG cũng chính là một yếu tố quyết định. Ở nhà mình làm hay bị mất tập trung và buồn ngủ, cơ mà hôm đi thi thì tỉnh như sáo do trước hôm đó ngủ đủ =)). Các bạn trước hôm thi nhớ ngủ đủ nha (như mình là ngủ 7 tiếng).

Một điều tối quan trọng của listening nữa là kĩ năng ĐỌC HIỂU. Mình phải luyện đọc thật nhanh trong lúc chờ file nghe bật lên để nắm được KEY WORDS và SỰ KHÁC NHAU giữa các đáp án. Với Format mới của listening thì mình thấy thời gian chờ cho mình đọc ít đi một chút nên kĩ năng Đọc hiểu này các bạn càng phải làm tốt hơn cả. Mình thấy nên TUYỆT ĐỐI TRÁNH đọc đáp án khi file nghe bắt đầu chạy, lúc đó cần tập trung cao độ vào file nghe và lướt qua các đáp án rồi chọn. Nhiều bạn (cả mình đã từng), lúc file nghe chạy rồi vẫn chăm chăm đọc và kết quả là miss liên tọi từ câu này qua câu khác 😉).

Bản thân mình luyện tập phân bổ thời gian đọc câu hỏi như sau, cả lúc luyện đề và đi thi: Lúc chờ vào băng part 1 thì cố gắng đọc hết câu hỏi part 1 + đoạn đầu part 2. Khi xong part 1 chuẩn bị đến part 2 thì phải đọc sang mấy câu part 3 rồi. Còn hết part 2 thì mình dành cả time đọc part 3, đọc đi đọc lại, càng nhiều lần càng tốt. Hết part 3 mình mới đọc sang part 4 ( nếu bạn nào đọc nhanh có thể đọc vài câu part 4 đầu trước). Mình thấy với format cũ thì chỉ cần trong lúc hết part 2 chờ part 3 là mình đã đọc được gần hết part 4 rồi ☹. Cơ mà may hôm đó thi vẫn ổn ^^

Nguồn luyện đề của mình chính là từ bộ đề Cambridge huyền thoại, 2 lần mình thi thì thấy độ khó tương đương, đặc biệt là Cam 15. Ngoài ra mình còn làm đề Actual test trên https://ieltsonlinetests.com/, để luyện format thi trên máy, cơ mà mình thấy thi thật chả giống mấy. Bạn nào thi máy thì làm đề giấy xong gần đến ngày thi thì lên web của IDP có format cho mình test thử làm quen chút là ổn. Một số nguồn test khác mình thấy cũng tốt đó là : Official Cambridge Guide, Ielts test trainer, Ielts test plus… Mình thì không có nhiều thời gian nên làm mỗi vài test trong test plus và Cambridge Guide thôi ^^.Mình thấy điều quan trọng là: Chất lượng hơn số lượng, ít nhưng chất =)))

Có nên luyện theo phương pháp chép chính tả?
Bản thân mình không luyện nghe theo cách này, tại vì mình thấy khá tẻ nhạt. Với mình, kĩ năng nghe là để enjoy hơn là buộc bản thân mình vào khuôn khổ. Mình có thử chép chính tả và thấy khá mất thời gian và rất dễ nản, thế nên mình bỏ luôn. Mình chưa kiểm chứng và không chắc chép chính tả sẽ khiến cho mọi người tiến bộ nhanh kỹ năng nghe, nên có lẽ tùy người sẽ có những quan điểm khác nhau. Mình thấy có vẻ chép chính tả khiến mọi người học từ vựng nhanh hơn, tuy vậy để học nghe hiểu bắt nội dung thì mình thấy không hiệu quả lắm.
Có nên take notes?

Mình cũng không take note trong lúc thi ( tại mình thi máy tính) và cũng chả gạch keywords vào câu hỏi luôn, thay vào đó, mình tập trung cho việc đọc hiểu, nắm bắt điểm chính của câu hỏi và nghe hiểu.

Đó là quá trình học từ 0- 9.0 listening của mình. Đọc được đến đây là các bạn khá kiên trì rồi đó ^^. Mặc dù khá là dài nhưng đó là quá trình 5 năm cũng như là đó là chia sẻ đầy tâm huyết của mình. Mong là các bạn có thể tìm được cho mình một thứ gì có giá trị trong bài post này và Tiếng anh của các bạn sẽ ngày một khá lên.

English version 「🇮🇸Budget to go Iceland🇮🇸」

In planning this Iceland road trip around I do not refer to other people's travels routes. So some attractions I might missed. Also, do not think Iceland will certainly see the aurora. We have 10 days there but only 2 days we have chance to see. One day is kp5, one day is kp1 Bale. There are also people who have not seen it in 10 days. In addition to the Aurora, Iceland is so beautiful of the landscape.

Day 1
Kuala Lumpur - Istanbul - London - Iceland
On October 24, 2017, we departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Iceland because of the cheap airfare.
So we need to transfer to Istanbul from Istanbul.
Then transfer from London to Iceland.
Although it is a waste of time but save money, it does not matter!
From Kuala Lumpur to Iceland took a total of 24 hours.

Day 2
Arrived in London at 9:30 in the morning.
The flight time to Iceland is 12:55.
Worried about too many people waiting in line so we buy online Premium Passport Lane.
With that pass, we do not need to line up with the customs.
VIP Lane can go directly.
Feel like VIP!
From customs clearance to get baggage no more than 15 minutes.
Walk from South to North terminal, Icelandair in North.
About 3 hours flight from London to Iceland, the first thing to Iceland is to change the local currency.
After that we pick up the car and we have a 9-day car rental with Thrifty.
Last added unlimited wireless Internet access, 15 euros a day.
Car must buy full insurance, Iceland has too much sand accident, it is easy to scratch.
In order to save money, we rented a manual car.
Take the car directly to the nearby Bonus supermarket to buy some food for next few days.
We spent RM160.
After an hour and a half by car to our hostel.
This homestay is located in a remote downtown area.
We reached there about 7:30PM.
Quickly prepare dinner, friends shouted after dinner. Aurora!!!
Everyone ran out to see the aurora.
I did not expect so strong aurora, the naked eye directly saw.
Also lasted a few hours, due to too excited, forget the jet lag.
Can not sleep, 12 o'clock to sleep, 5 o'clock and got up and continue to see Aurora.
And the sky full of star, is the most beautiful night i have ever seen.

Day 3
Sleep for 2 hours and enjoyed bathtub outside the house.
Hot springs so comfortable!
The sky started to light up at about 8 o'clock.
Prepare our breakfast, then we started today's attractions.
We are taking the most basic Golden Circle attractions.
Geysir Fountain - Goldfoss Gold Falls --bingvellir National Park
We went to Geysir Fountain and Gullfoss Golden Waterfall
Geysir fountain is so special! Is the geothermal valley, water from the ground.
Gold Falls is spectacular, remember to bring a raincoat, or will be drenched.
As we live in the middle of these two attractions, we have lunch back home trip.
Then go to bingvellir National Park
This is UNESCO, a lot of scenery to see, if you like the wild scenery must come to this.
Feel the Soul Out Rip in the Rift Valley at Singgweler National Park.
From 10 am until 6 pm in the evening.
Dinner at home.
We do not spent any money today

Day 4
Slept early last night, so everyone got up early.
After breakfast will go to other place.
The sky was covered with rain clouds.
We left at 8:30PM and went to Keiro Crater.
Tickets are required here, one for 400 kroner.
After continuing to the east, on the way through the Volcano Experience Hall.

Come to today's highlight - D3 wreckage
This is the story I heard.

Day 5

Day 7
If longer holidays, I will arrange a half-day trip in the middle of the trip.
After a few days of long run, we still stay in Akureyri today.
And we do not have any plan, we wake up to sleep naturally.
Go to the local supermarket stroll, explore the price, buy ingredients.
Walk around Akureyri Botanical Garden, the famous local church.
Then decide to go to an unknown tourist spot.
We decided to go to Dalvik.
Since this is not Route 1, we drive Route 82, so the road is not that good.
But the beautiful scenery along the way is so beautiful.
Lake, sea, snow-capped mountains.
And the mirror-like lake reflected the shadow of snow-capped mountains on the water.
Nobody walked by the road as we sat in the middle of the road taking pictures.
Alpine waterfall directly down the sea to the scenery now feel unforgettable.

Day 8
Today's trip is easy, so we sleep later.
We are staying in a farm in the north today.

After lunch, we sneak into the farm and play with the cute Icelandic horse.

We drove the car into Route 74.

So we decided to drive into the Sinai Peninsula, then do not take the 1st.

As we went to the Snæfellsnes to see Kirkjufell, so we travel longer.

Today is our last accommodation in Iceland and we have to enjoy tonight.

Day 10
Today is our last day, we wake up naturally.
Due to the car parked in Reykjavik parking.
We need pay parking hourly.
First we went to visit Reykjavik Cathedral.
Nice church, and Akureyri's church is the same designer!
As there are still a lot of public funds, we decided to take to eat Buffet.
Iceland has a great value Buffet.
This restaurant is located in the city center, restaurant reykjavik.
There are pickled fish, shrimp, desserts have.

We had eaten for nearly two hours before we came out because we had booked Blue Lake in the morning.

Reflection is the latest work in a long series. It started (as far as record releases are concerned) with Discreet Music in 1975 ( - or did it start with the first Fripp and Eno album in 1973? Or did it start with the first original piece of music I ever made, at Ipswich Art School in 1965 - recordings of a metal lampshade slowed down to half and quarter speed, all overlaid?)

Anyway, it’s the music that I later called ‘Ambient’. I don’t think I understand what that term stands for anymore - it seems to have swollen to accommodate some quite unexpected bedfellows - but I still use it to distinguish it from pieces of music that have fixed duration and rhythmically connected, locked together elements.

The pedigree of this piece includes Thursday Afternoon, Neroli (whose subtitle is Thinking Music IV) and LUX. I’ve made a lot of thinking music, but most of it I’ve kept for myself. Now I notice that people are using some of those earlier records in the way that I use them - as provocative spaces for thinking - so I feel more inclined to make them public.

Pieces like this have another name: they’re GENERATIVE. By that I mean they make themselves. My job as a composer is to set in place a group of sounds and phrases, and then some rules which decide what happens to them. I then set the whole system playing and see what it does, adjusting the sounds and the phrases and the rules until I get something I’m happy with. Because those rules are probabilistic ( - often taking the form ‘perform operation x, y percent of the time’) the piece unfolds differently every time it is activated. What you have here is a recording of one of those unfoldings.

Reflection is so called because I find it makes me think back. It makes me think things over. It seems to create a psychological space that encourages internal conversation. And external ones actually - people seem to enjoy it as the background to their conversations. When I make a piece like this most of my time is spent listening to it for long periods - sometimes several whole days - observing what it does to different situations, seeing how it makes me feel. I make my observations and then tweak the rules. Because everything in the pieces is probabilistic and because the probabilities pile up it can take a very long time to get an idea of all the variations that might occur in the piece. One rule might say ‘raise 1 out of every 100 notes by 5 semitones’ and another might say ‘raise one out of every 50 notes by 7 semitones’. If those two instructions are operating on the same data stream, sometimes - very rarely - they will both operate on the same note…so something like 1 in every 5000 notes will be raised by 12 semitones. You won’t know which of those 5000 notes it’s going to be. Since there are a lot of these types of operations going on together, on different but parallel data streams, the end result is a complex and unpredictable web.

Perhaps you can divide artists into two categories: farmers and cowboys. The farmers settle a piece of land and cultivate it carefully, finding more and more value in it. The cowboys look for new places and are excited by the sheer fact of discovery, and the freedom of being somewhere that not many people have been before. I used to think I was temperamentally more cowboy than farmer… but the fact that the series to which this piece belongs has been running now for over 4 decades makes me think that there’s quite a big bit of farmer in me.
