Why Taiwanese students don't need to worry about College Board's new "Adversity Score"
Ever since College Board announced its new adversity score, I've been inundated with messages from concerned parents who are worried that the new index will affect their child's chances of being admitted to prestigious universities in the US.
From what we can tell so far, the College Board does not have sufficient data to calculate a score for international students. They rely on US census data, which is irrelevant in Taiwan and for other non-US countries.
International students are still (and have always been) facing stiff competition for entry to universities because such a small percentage of places are allocated to non-US citizens. In effect, nothing has changed for us. You still need to strive to get a high score if you want to be guaranteed a place in a leading university.
According to news sources, the ACT will be initiating a similar measure toward the end of this year, so such an index makes no difference to your decision of which college entrance exam (SAT or ACT) to take.
Further, the adversity score does NOT factor race into its calculation, so this is definitely NOT discriminating against Asians. It's simply a misguided approach for the US to level out the playing field. Moreover, this is merely the latest ploy to do so. I can remember similar such policies from 25 years ago. It's nothing new.
I'm including an article from a few days ago if you are interested in reading more about it. Still, there's certainly nothing to worry about. It's far better to focus on improving your performance on your next SAT test than to worry about policy changes.
Remember: you can't change US policy, but you CAN continue to improve!
